Mastitis? - Boca Raton,FL

I am currently exclusively breastfeeding my two month old. I had symptoms of thrush and took a diflucan 4 days ago and was putting Nyastatin on my nipple at night. The doctor told me to make sure I wash it off before I feed the baby so in the "early" morning on Saturday, when she woke up I only fed her from the opposite side so I didn't have to get out of bed. When I actually got up 3 hours later I was very sore on the side I didn't feed on and my breast had a little red area. I probably went about 10 hours without emptying it. It is now 36 hours later and the redness has spread but is not hot. The breast is very tender and I feel dense knots in it. I have been placing warm compressing on it and nursing often. I do not have a fever or flu like symptoms, just pain and redness. Could this be Mastitis? Not sure if I should go to work tomorrow and call the doctor or take off and go see the doctor. Anyone ever experience something like this? Possible treatments?

What can I do next?

sounds like a clogged duct which can develop into mastitis if it doesn't clear out. If you start running a fever and achy flu-like symptoms then it's time to call the Dr. (i've had it twice with breastfeeding 3 kids each for a year)
I would pump that breast for at least 15 min every 2-3 hours. Massaging the hard spot with my knuckle while pumping. Massage in circles and push toward the nipple. A warm compress before pumping helps too. I was able to relieve my hotspots within a day if I was diligent.

Hot shower, nurse nurse nurse, and if you have a pump, try pumping. I've had that before, but only once it did develop into Mastisis, but then I had the fever and chills. After that one time, I was diligent about pumping or nursing out every hotspot.

I had a small handpump that I used for engorgement and occasional bottles, it was very effective for pumping out spots like that if I massaged them while I was pumping.

Sounds like a clogged duct. Nurse nurse nurse on that side. In addition, I know this sounds weird, but raw cabbage leaves just put on the breast help with clogged ducts and mastitis. (Get organic cabbage if you can.)

I'm rather prone to clogged ducts, and had it progress to mastitis once in almost 9 years of nursing. If you start running a fever or if your milk starts looking any different, get to a doctor right away. When I had mastitis, the milk from that side was suddenly greenish yellow and gloppy -- you can still nurse if that happens (if your baby will do it -- it does taste different though) but I just couldn't -- I pumped on that side very regularly and nursed on the other side until it cleared up.

Massaging the breast in a warm shower also helps with clogged ducts.

It might be a clogged duct. Get in a hot shower, massage that breast, and express some milk. Also, not feeding her from one side for that long can cause some supply issues. I had an oversupply problem, and to lower my supply, I only fed from one side at a time per feeding. If you don't nurse her from the affected breast, then you have to express some or pump. I personally think it would be better to just wipe off the medication.

That used to happen to me all the time. I would always have knots and red areas & even warm to the touch. Like you, I would just nurse as much as possible and it would go away in a couple days. I never ended up w/ a fever or anything more severe. Also, it would always happen on the same breast , same area, for me. You may need to pump a little, also. Hope your more comfortable soon.
