I know someone posted a question on redecorating her sons room. But this one is for the Moms and Dads. I have been wanting to redo our bedroom. It is a VERY small room. Right now the walls are white. I want to do it with something modern, and a color on the walls, and a new bedding set. We recently redid out livingroom in earthy tones, sage, tan, etc... So I want something different from that. The bedroom has been put on hold cause I simply cannot figure out a color combo that wont make the room look smaller than it already does........ Like I said I want a color on the walls, yet I dunno what color and how to tie it into the bedding... Any ideas? Thanks Ladies

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone that responded. While the holiday have creeped up on us, I've decided to make the bedroom a early spring project. Partly too cause I havent found the bedding set I like. I am leaning towards the light blue shades. Like a ice blue in two differnt tones for the walls and bedding, with white also, and black accents throughout the room.......

I think that some of the new color combinations that you see in bedding now would be really pretty. My favorite is the chocolate brown and light blues that you can find. You could find a blue that would be soft on the walls and then as others suggested paint the wall behine the bed brown, this would draw the eye into the room. I say don't be afraid of color, sometimes color helps to make a small room feel bigger. I always say it's only paint, if you don't like it paint it again.

When it comes to redoing a room for me I always pick the fabric first. I think it's so much easier that way. Find a comforter or curtains that you want to work around. Then pick a color from that fabric and bring it to the paint store and have them match it. It's much easier then picking off those swatches. I even buy a faceclothe or a pillow case with a color that I want and bring it to them to match. It saves time returning too. If you paint the walls then try to find the comforter you may get it home and see that it doesn't really match the walls.

Hi K..
I was just reading an aricle about making small rooms look more spacious and I got these ideas. One, paint just one wall (the focal point) a deep color of your choice and keep the others all a soft creamy color. This draws the attention to one point and supposedly makes the room appear larger while also giving it color and dimension. Another suggestion was to use curtains/window treatments that go from ceiling to floor. Anything that reaches high draws the vision up and makes the ceiling appear higher. Finally, the article recommended a few large pieces of furniture/accessories rather than a bunch of small ones. I read this is in Real Simple Magazine but have also seen references to all of it on HGTV and in a bunch of newsletters I subscribe to. As you can probably tell I took it all to heart b/c I plan on redoing my own small master bedroom! I just found a beautiful new duvet set on an E-Bay store that was very affordable and is gorgeous so I am using it as my inspiration. It is chocolate brown and white so I am painting the wall across from my bed a deep chocolate and the 3 others a cream color. I already have long curtains and the duvet set comes with beautful decoratuve pillows. I can't wait. Good luck!!!

It sounds weird, but I love our bedroom color.
It's called "Touch of Nectar."
It is a soft yellow in the sunshine and a creamy orangy-yellow when the lamps are lit.
It brightens up our teeny room.

TLC often has lots of shows about redecorating rooms. They can usually be found on their website too: www.tlc.com! I love a lot of these shows as they often have several decorating tips on a budget that spend little to no money. Hope that's helpful.

Hi K.,

I am an interior designer, with a firm named
SHELTER and a blog www.shelterinteriordesign.blogspot.com,
check it out when you have a moment.
I would start by tearing, ideas that appeal to you, out
of design magazines...A pattern will develop. It
may be with color, texture etc. Ask yourself how would
you like the room to feel, peaceful etc?? I usually
suggest soft colors, smokey blue, light turquoise etc. in bedrooms...They are restful and work with a number of colors. This way you can switch out the bedding/pillows for a quick change.

Good Luck!

My favorite look right now is that pretty, earthy blue color with brown. Our bedroom is tan and green, but if I had it to do over, I'd go for blue and brown. The colors are everywhere and you can find accents easily. I agree with another post that said you should pick a comforter and sheet set first then go from there - great idea. If the comforter has a mix of colors, try bringing out one of your favorite shades for the walls. Get some accent pillows in comparable shades. Mix and match and before you know it (with a little imagination), you can have a really attractive room. If the room is small, try a light color on the walls so it gives the illusion of being bigger. I hope this helps a little. Have fun with it!

K.,

It sounds like you already have bedding you want to use/keep on using for your bedroom. The easiest way to pick colors for a room is to pull them from fabrics or linens that you like the colors and patterns of and can use in the room. So if you have a floral print and it has yellows, oranges and reds in it. You can do the walls in yellow -light and airy (you can take the material/quilt to Home Depot or any store and they will match the paint to that exact color so their is no guess work - the color will be perfect). Then do throw pillows in oranges and reds. Get red sheets. Do the curtains in a fabric that compliments the colors but is a different pattern. That kind of thing.
If you want to look at pictures of rooms Home Depot or places like that have magazines/books in the front with all decorating ideas in them - look there.
Also HDTV has stuff on their website you can look up and get ideas from.

Good luck,
L.

Here's my tip ... choose your bedding (comforter, etc) FIRST, then find one of the colors in there to 'pull out' of it. The bedding is easier to track down, and depending on the design, will give you a large range of color ideas for the walls. If you're afraid of making the room look too small, stick with very pale versions of the color(s) you like, or paint only one wall in a bold color (the one above your bed is best) - the bold color will reflect off the white walls and make them appear as though they have been painted in color when they haven't. :)

You can try a sunny yellow to open up the room, or put another color one one or 2 walls to start. A nice color with white woodwork (doors, window sills, etc.) really makes the contrast colors "pop" - don't be afraid to try. If you have a bedding design you like, take a sample to the paint store and let them help you. Tell them you don't want the room to look too small, but you'd be surprised that many colors don't close the room down at all. Sometimes big fabric stores (like the Fabric Place in Framingham) have bedding, pillows, curtains and all kinds of things in a set - you can choose what you like, then take a pillow case to the paint store!

If the room is really small and you want to add color how about painting just one wall or the ceiling? That will give the room a bit of color and will also give in the illusion of being a bit bigger.

Hi K.,

I am a decorator. Here is my advice. Do not rush. Find and inspiration fabric at Joannes or Calico corner. Something that reflects your taste. I am a fan of up beat fabrics. Not too loud just something that speaks to you when you look at it. Take a few samples home with you. Live with them for a week or so. See how the fabrics look in different light. When your ready I have a wonderful seamstress that lives in Medway that is truly an artist at what she does. The kicker is she does not charge a ridiculous amount. Wall paint color should be pulled from your duvet cover or accent fabric. I recommend home town paint in Franklin. Use the Aura brand made by Ben Moore. It actually covers in one coat. That is the beauty of this line of paints. The pigment is so rich and it is a huge time saver. Any other questions let me know. Good luck and have fun!
