Hi D.,

My 11 yr old daughter just started taking martial arts this year at the Town North YMCA (north Dallas). Not sure if the Y on your side of town offers it or not, I know they are all different, but may be worth checking into. We've been really pleased with the class and as I bonus I can walk around the track or swim (haven't gotten up the nerve to go in the weight room yet) while she's having her class.

Also, just had to tell you my work situation is the same. After being in the corporate world for years I got laid off last year and decided to try it on my on. I'm doing exactly the same as you, working some at home and some in client's offices. I absolutely love the flexibility it gives me to set my own schedule. I wish I had done it years earlier.

Good luck find a class.

My family doesn't have personal experience, but I have heard great things about Yim's Tae Kwon Do for years.

Tae Kwon Do at the White Rock YMCA.....my kids took there some years ago and it was awesome and affordable..........hth

My son is now at Yim's Tae Kwon Do and we love it. I left USA Martial Arts very disappointed. Yim's Tae Kwon Do is located on Greenville between Walnut Hill and Park. They currently have a offer of two classes and a uniform or $39.00. It is certainly worth checking out if it is not too far away for you. Their web site is www.yimstaekwondo.com

Freddie Poole's Martial Arts is an amazing studio!

Also look into the Dallas Academy of Martial Arts. They are on Plano Road at Walnut Hill Lane. They've been in the area for 30 years and have a great program for children starting at 5 1/2 all the way through adults.

Remember when you're looking, that a good school will let you try out and/or observe some classes before signing up and never sign a contract.

You can reach them at 214/343-3000 and talk to Shayne. Tell him D. referred you. Good luck in your search. It's a very worth while sport especially for girls your daughter's age. Girls need to learn to have self confidence and how to take care of themselves if they are ever in the situation.
