Managing Teething Pain

My 6-month-old is having a tough time with the pain of teething. What's the best way to ease his pain?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Thank you all for the great advice! I tried the ice, wrapped in a washcloth, but that didn't seem to help. I gave the little guy some Motrin, and he finally stopped crying about 10 minutes later. Hubby is picking up some Orajel, and I will be searching for everything else on the list as additional arsenal in the meanwhile. Wow, he'd been handling the teething so well until just a couple of days ago. Poor baby! Thanks, again, mamas!

Being breast fed, you may be bitten, if he's teething. Oraljel or something to rub on his teeth helps. Ice or something cold, even a washcloth.

We had someone recommend "teething tablets" and they are AMAZING. You just put them under their tongue and they dissolve almost immediately. You can find them at Walmart or Target or just about any pharmacy. You may have to ask at the pharmacy counter but they are an OTC item. Good luck.

If your baby has minimal trouble with teething, then the teething tablets and something to gnaw on will probably work. If your baby has a lot of trouble with teething, then the tablets will be ineffective. Motrin is good for babies that find the pain unbearable because it helps with the inflamation. Our pediatrition told us that every baby reacts differently to teething.

I like to use a liquid calcium for kids. I have a current teether right now and I'll rub it on his gums as well as give him a dose. Usually, kids can go through teething much easier when they aren't lacking in calcium. I haven't had a crying child yet while teething.

We have used Gentle Naturals from the start for teething.

It's a homeopathic teething drops and it works better than anything else we've tried. Our pediatrician reccommend us to put whisky on his gums and that works too but the teething drops does just as well and it doesn't numb his entire mouth like oragel.

best of luck!

Hi A.,

Teething Tablets by Hylands helps. Available at Whole Foods and some health food stores. These homeopathy tablets melt under the tongue.

Frozen bagels (cut into four pieces, then freeze) brings instant relief and are not messy like the teething biscuits.

The above worked extremely well with our two sons (now 18 and 16). Hope it helps your baby.

Best wishes,

I. Chang

We have been using Hyland's teething tablets for years. They are all natural. They dissolve in the baby's mouth. They do not numb the throat like Oragel & other teething gels which can cause gagging & choking. Target pharmacy has them behind the counter.

I just wanted to second what the others were saying about the teething tablets. I used Hyland's Teething Tablets. You can find them at Walgreen's but they cost less at Wal-mart. They used to have them in the vitamin section but I also saw them in the baby section where the teething rings are the other day. I have 2 children that I used them on. I would not have survived without it. It's a natural product - chamomille which will not hurt them it is just a natural relaxant/calmer. My son seemed worse at teething then my daughter and I actually gave him more tablets than the dosage recommendation and it did not hurt him. Good luck.
