Making Crib Sheets, but Not Sure on the Fabric I Want Is Safe.

Ok my son LOVES my blanket that is fuzzy. I call it "The Beast" because it reminds me of the Beast in my favorite book Beauty by Robin McKinley. So you know the fabric that is kind of curly and is fur like? Well I'm wanting to make my son (one year old) crib sheets. I've made cotton sheets, but now that it's winter I wonder if it would be safe. I of course (if I did) wash it many many times to get rid of any loose fibers, but I think it would be ok, since he ends up curled in my blanket at night. But I just want to get other smarter mom's opinions before I do. I of course would make sure it's a tight snug fit.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Thanks all!

My son has store bought fleece sheets that he loves!! I don't think I would make sheets out of that material but I do have fleece sheets and a blanket like that on his bed too and he loves it. Could be a better compromise. His fleecey's (sheet) keep him warm and if he is too hot he asks for the cold sheets (cotton) ... too cute.

Flannel is always nice.
And there are so many child-appropriate prints . . .
animals, cartoon characters, et al.

I wouldn't, if it were me. In my experience with that fabric, it does shed some even after heavy washing. I went with a thick flannel, for my son's winter sheets. It worked well.

Are you saying that you want to make crib sheets out of the curly fur like fabric? If so, I suggest that you not do so. They would be difficult to keep clean. The bottom sheet needs to be smooth so that it doesn't trap saliva, moisture, mucous, crumbs, etc.

Make him a blanket out of the fabric. He can lay on it and you can pick it up and shake it out.

You don't say how old your son is. Does he still clench his fist and pull on loose things? IF so, no matter how many times you wash it, its possible he'll pull out fibers. Fibers will pull out easier too if the fabric is stretched taught.

I think like Marda said, it could be unsanitary and it won't breathe. Also, though it sounds comfy, I see a few issues with the fabric your speaking of (I'm pretty sure I know what you are talking about) Anyway, it won't hold up as well as cotton to washing. It also won't hold it's shape and will start stretching. I think it may also start pilling. Shira suggested flannel which I think is a good idea, softer and warmer in the winter. Not that I don't like this fabric, I do, just think it will do better as a blanket or as lounge pants.

I bought t-shirt knit crib and bed sheets. They are very soft and cotton as well. I made small crib blankets out of the furry synthetic fabric and both of my kids love them. I started letting them sleep with a blanket and a stuffed animal when they were about 1 year old.

I think that Pottery Barn Kids makes "fluffy" sheets.

I don't think it would be a problem. Our son has slept with a blanket that has double sided fur since he was 6 months old. I'd say at least 99% of the time it has been over his head. I'd say 100%, but the nurses wouldn't let him do that when he was in the hospital. :) He's my best sleeper, too. Have fun sewing!
