Lst Time Mom to Be of Triplets, 15 Weeks Old and One Has Kidney Blockage

Just had a ultrasound today and baby B has what appears to be a kidney blockage. The Dr explained about doing a shunt through my abdomin to baby, the risks and effects it could have or the possiblity of selective reduction. Has anyone been through this? I just don't think I could do the reduction.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Upon further reviewing the blockage the Dr. called and wanted me to see a fetal surgeon in Houston that deals almost exclusively with multiples and within 24 hours we were there. After an extremely detailed ultra sound and sonogram he and the pediactric kidney specialist have determined it is a complete blockage and a shunt is not even an option in triplets. We are waiting 2 weeks to see if the blockage possibily could break through, he said in his 25 years of practice he has only seen 5 do this. The kidney specailist has seen none in her 5 years of practice. The both say that if the baby is born as close to term as possible it will probably not live 24 to 72 hours. If the baby is born really prematurely it can effect the other 2 that are doing fine and the possibility of losing all 3 is greater. I guess I will know more in a couple of weeks. Thank you all for responding and keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

Definitely get a second opinion. I used Dr.Snodgrass at children medical center when my son was diagnosed with kidney blockage at my 20 week ultrasound. Since it was only 1 kidney, he was still able to go to term and there was no issues. We are still having him checked, he is almost a year. He has stage IV Hydronephrosis and will have surgery to correct this in the next few months. They waited a while after he was born to watch as sometimes it can decrease in severity after birth. His is the most serious of them but he is doing great. I was born with the same condition but it wasn't discovered until I was 18. I have had surgery for it and I am fine. A lot depends on what kind of blockage it is and how much amniotic fluid the baby is able to maintain in the womb. If it is dangerously low, they can intervene. But you should be talking to a pediatric urologist to find out all the options. As well, you should have more ultrasounds and even an MRI done so the doctors can see with more precision what this issue is. The ultrasound at the OB/GYN should only be a starting point to discover anything.
I hope you found this helpful - and hopeful.

God gives people only things that they can handle which I believe to be true. I think you should just leave it in his hands. He will decide what is best not the doctor or anyone else. I wish you well, and you and your babies will be in my prayers!!

A friend of mine underwent fetal surgery for some sort of blockage in her baby. I believe the specialist was Dr. Tabor in Ft Worth. Her pregnancy was much further along though. You might meet with the specialist first before making your decision. This has to be hard since you have to also consider the 2 other babies.

Im not sure about any of that, I know you must be so scared and worried, im sorry for you and will be praying for your baby! I just wanted you to know my older son (who is now 3 1/2), also had kidney problem short term in plain english is he had reflux of the kidney every time he pottied it would come back up into his kidneys, they didnt find out this until he was about a month old and he outgrew it on his own. As for the reduction i couldnt do that personally that is just me and my beliefs though. I wish the best for you and your baby.

I am not sure where you are but I would get to Texas Children's Hospital or Women's Hospital of Texas in Houston as fast as possible. They would be my second choice only to the MAyo Clinic. I have not experienced the Mayo Clinic but I have experiened the other two and they saved both of my boys. Please consider this. I am in no way saying your doctors are incompotent. They just have the newest technology and research in Houston.

First of all Congratulations!
B., I think you should get a second opinion. And I also recommend you to drink Tahitian Noni Juice. I heard it is very good for pregnant women and the babies and just good for the whole body. Here's a testimonial:

Title: PREGNANCY WITH TWINS
Wow. Noni juice is a wonder juice of medicine. I had been drinking noni juice for at least 3 years before I found out that I was expecting twins. I was turning 36 years old and already had 2 older teenagers. I was carrying the both of them very well; just belly with no swelling. No complications, just excitement and joy that I was doing so well. I was so addicted to noni juice during my pregnancy I would not leave home without it. My doctor and her staff were so amazed at how well I was doing, but very concernd about the growth of my twins. They were growing rapidly, but they were healthy. My baby boy was gaining ounces by the week, and my baby daughter was right behind him. The concern was whether I would make it till December 7, 2005-my expected delivery date. I was 6 1/2 months pregnant at this time, and of course I started feeling a bit nervous because I did not want the babies to be born too soon. The good news is that their weight gain was excellent. I ended up going into labor and my water broke. I was very calm. I drank a glass of my noni juice, took a shower, got dressed and drove myself to the hospital. I was amazed that I was not having any pain whatsoever. When I arrived at the hospital, I parked my car, walked to the emergency room, and told the front desk that I was in labor, my water broke, and I was carrying twins. The nurse had a look of shock on her face. I was checked in and escorted to my room where I would possibly be giving birth. I was monitored very closely due to the contractions I was having every 2 to 3 minutes. The nurses were just shocked that I was doing so well and could not feel the strong contractions rumbling like thunder on the monitor. I refused all drugs. Noni was my drug juice that hour. I ended up having an emergency c-section an hour later. When the twins were born my son weighed 6.5 pounds and my daughter weighed 5.5 pounds. I did not carry the twins full term. They were born at 7 1/2 months. After my c-section, I asked the nurse to look into my bag and bring me my noni juice. I told her this juice was the source of my healthy pregnancy. My twins are turning 1 year old in October 2006 and doing well. They are very alert, always happy, very very very energetic, not fussy, they have good well checkups with their doctor's appointments, are growing healthy and strong, and sipping on noni juice with mommy once a day. This juice will be with me through my senior years. My whole family is on the noni juice. Thank you noni.
