Low Acid Foods

My husband has just discovered he has acid reflux. He's doctor didn't give him much info at all, so were trying to find more on line. I've found so many contradictions about what foods are low acid I don't know what to believe. Anyone have a good web page or diet they follow? Were happy to try almost any life style change in hopes he doesn't have to take pills all the time.

What can I do next?

I had acid reflux for many years and was on Prilosec or Zantac for a long time. I've always been a bit on the chubby side. I started Weight Watchers and lost 50 lbs and guess what?? No more acid reflux! I'm still not thin, but just changing my diet was the answer. I haven't had to take anything for it since then (it's been a couple of years). The number one thing...no fried foods or fast foods! Tomatos & Citrus can be tough too. For me, once I gave up the fast foods & fried foods, I had no problem eating citrus-y foods or tomatoes.

Good luck!

Hi,
You can go to the health food store and buy the active ingredient in licorice, or you can eat just a few strips red licorice daily and it will do the trick. I had some reflux due to meds I was taking, looked up remedys on-line found licorice and I think papya tea.Google it,and see what comes up. The licorice worked for me,the meds were awful.
Hope that helps.

check out www.phmiracleliving.com.... It's not specifically for acid reflux but any condition/ailment... Dr. Young has a diet that is quite extreme and is pretty much the diet to live 150 year but I think he is spot on with what he recommends and it's all about acidic foods. Worth checking out. His book is very interesting, "The pH Miracle"

Hi A.,

Generally with reflux you want to avoid foods like tomatoes, peppers, citrus, and peppermint. Alcohol and caffeine can also aggrivate reflux, including chocolate. You also want avoid laying down shortly after a meal (less than an hour) and avoid eating large meals at one sitting. Some people are also sensitive to foods that are spicy and/or creamy (read: high fat).

It's trial and error, really, so good luck to you. If your husband is still having difficulty after eliminating the above foods, you may want to meet with a registered dietitian for more help.

I have to second the advice about the apple cider vinegar. While cider is an acid our bodies will turn it into an akaline. Also there are beneficial enzymes in it. My husband mixes 2 Tbls of Apple Cider Vinegar, 2 Tbls honey (which also have beneficial enzymes), and 2 Tbls of olive oil. He drinks this every day. You may also want to try a really good probiotic. Every day I keep hearing more and more about the benefits of good intestinal health, a probiotic may not have a direct effect on the reflux but could make things better in a round about way, if that makes any sense? Anyway Good luck.

I have Acid Reflux and here is what I do: Stay away from oranges (grapefruits or any acidic fruit), tomatoes, spicy foods, etc. Make sure he eats slow. Take a bite then put the fork down. Do not eat right before bed time. Usually not eating after dinner is a good rule of thumb. And drink water (1/2 weight in ounces).

With regards to supplements, here is what I use: Alfalfa, Optiflora (probiotic), EZ Gest (enzymes), zinc and B-Complex (helps to reduce affects of stress as well).

Also having his back in line is good. If you know of a good chiropractor, I would high recommend going to get his back adjusted.

All of this has really helped me.

I am here, if you have any questions or need more help.

HI A.,
I hope this doesn't sound too flakey, but a lot of acid reflux problems can be solved with apple cider vinegar. Try to google cures for acid reflux. Doctors will give you medicine to reduce acid, so your body will respond by making more acid and the cycle continues. Chewable calcium also helps to calm the upset stomach, but be careful to buy supplements from a reputable company like Shaklee. Most vitamins and supplements are now imported from China and are full of unknown ingredients.
You need acid to digest your food, and now they are finding out that people who have been on acid suppressing drugs are at high risk for osteoporosis, because your body can't properly absorb your food. All drugs have side effects, so if you can find a natural cure, that is way better. Also, a good product is Shaklee's Optiflora system, which consist of a probiotic "pearl" and prebiotic food for the encapsulated bacteria- this can do wonders for the digestive tract. If you would like any other info, please let me know.

Hi. I haven't studied it much, but my boss read a book with "alkalinity" in the title. You could query that at Amazon and see what you find. Also... I hear marcrobiotics are great and low acid. I read The Hip Chicks Guide to Macrobiotics. It was a good and interesting book.

I'm not sure about eating low acid foods to help with acid reflux, but if you are looking for a "natural" aid, good old apple cider vinegar works for me. I add one to two teaspoons of it to apple or grape juice and drink it down. It works better than the prescriptions the doctor gave me and it is cheap and natural. There plenty of websites that address this issue. One thing I do remember is that chocolate, coffee, and peppermint are some of the problem foods when one has acid reflux. Here is a website for more info. www.earthclinic.com/Remedies/acvinegar.html

Chiropractic care is great for acid reflux! Tell your chiro about the problems and usually they will find something in the middle of the back (around T6). This is the area that the nerves exit the spine and travel to the stomach. When there is interference (or subluxation) here it can cause reflux and other stomach issues. I'm a chiro in Birmingham and have had great success with reflux.
Best of luck!

When you have acid reflux you need to stay away from tomatoes spagetti sauce orange juice, anything that may effect the stomach. Sweet tarts, sweet and sour stuff. I have lived with it for at least the last 20 years and I just watch and I know what will and willnot effect it. There is over the counter stuff to take like tums or rolaids. If your really bad prevacid 30 mg from the dr works awesome. But I read your natural. Natural remedy is mint.

It sounds crazy, but have him try taking a "shot" (1 oz) of apple cider vinegar. It tastes terrible but it works and has no side effects. From what I have read, acid reflux is really a condition, not a disease, from NOT ENOUGH acid. Go to a natural healing website and read up. You will be surprised! Bottoms up!

My son had acid reflex from the moment he was born.... He simply learned that there were certain things that he just couldn't eat... then he had to have his tonsils out when he was a teen. once this happened he has never had a problem since and can eat anything he wants...
I don't know if this will help your husband but it was our experience... otherwise just tell him to watch what he eats as certain types of food will be likely to set it off... and then he can make accomodations from there

Hope this helps
