It's 10pm, the neighors ACROSS the street (they are adults) are having a party and the music is so loud I can FEEL it in my house, would you call the police? I feel for the people how live next door to them....

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, I didn't call. I thought about so long I think someone beat me to it. There came a point when the music got lower, all the people that were on the front 'porch' went inside and the front of the house got VERY dark. They don't have these parties often but I have to tell you the music was VERY loud. I have kids and the neighbors on both sides of them have kids. We are friendly with these people and we're usually invited to their parties but it looked like this was a special occassion party. When they party like this they drink a lot and I wasn't interested in knocking on the door. Thank you for all the input.

Yes, I would call the cops.

I would not admit that I was the one who called to anyone in the neighborhood! ;)

We have loud music nearby tonight, too, but I can't hear it when I am inside so no biggie.

Depends on the neighbor and depends if I'm the only adult in the home.

If I'm the only adult, I wouldn't leave my kids alone in the house so I might very well call the cops.

If someone is home to stay with the kids, I'd go knock on the door, "Hi, I'm your neighbor. I'm trying to sleep and the music coming from your house is vibrating the floor. Please turn it down."

If the neighbor (and/or guests) seem like they could get hostel, I'd probably ere on the side of safety and not go over there myself.

On a Saturday night? Lighten up, no, I would not call the cops. If its keeping the kids up, call them or go over there. 10pm is not loud on a weekend night, IMO.

If this is the first time this has happened I'd ignore it. If it happens often, I'd wait until the next day or two and talk with them about it. Get to know your neighbors so that you can talk with them about such things.

We have a noise ordinance in our city that goes into effect at 10pm. First, we go over ourselves and nicely ask them to turn the music down. If they do not comply, we call the cops. The cops always show up.

If it's once in a while, and on a weekend, then I probably wouldn't do anything. Ear plugs and sound machines or white noise are your friends :-).

depends on your town ordinance. it might be later, but most of the time 10 is the cut-off point.
the ideal thing to do would be to ask them directly, but of course that has the possibility of backfiring. it's still where i'd start if at all possible.
i really really hate being disturbed by loud neighbors. fortunately mine don't do it too often, and when they are having a REALLY big bash they invite us. not because they want us to come (and we don't) but because it's a nice way of saying 'hey, big loud party, batten down the hatches.'
if it's something that happens often, or goes on past midnight, and you don't feel safe asking them directly, it might be time to call the police.

You need to google your city ordinances. Ours states that any mechanical produced sound is regulated 24 hours per day and does not have a time limit on it.

If you find that your town has ordinances that they are breaking please call for an officer to come to your home. Hand them a copy of the ordinance and ask them to enforce it. If they are seeing and feeling what you are feeling inside your home then they should have sympathy enough to go make sure the music is turned down to a reasonable level. Some times living in a neighborhood is part getting along and just turning on some white noise to drown out the neighbors...this sounds like it was WAY more than that though.

Probably the local ordinance says that midnight is the cutoff on the weekends for loud music disturbing the neighborhood.

You can probably find that info online for your township...

Your neighbors should have invited you so that you wouldn't be pissed...!
