Lots of Blow Outs!

My 4 month old just started having more frequent bowel movements and it seems like most of them go beyond the diaper ruining her clothes. We use pampers swaddlers. Any advice on a better diaper that is better for explosive poopies. She even woke up this morning with pee on her clothes (poor baby). And any advice on how to get that poop out of clothes. I have tried soaking and putting detergent right on the stain. I can get the darker colors to look like normal, but I end up throwing out her light colors. Thanks ahead of time.

What can I do next?

Hi L.- I'm not saying anything that hasn't already been said, but it may not be an issue w/ brand, just w/ size. The same thing happened to my daughter every time it was time to move up a size- we'd get the bigger diapers and that would be the end of the blowouts! Fun, fun!!

Go up to the next size in diapers - sounds like it's time. Also, for stains, soak the clothes in oxyclean. I bought an inexpensive tub and dedicated it to poopy clothes. I soaked them in oxyclean at least over night, then washed with the regular laundry - worked every time.
Good luck!

My little one always had lots of blow outs too. It didn't stop until she was eating solids. As for stains, I always used spray n' wash spray. You don't soak the clothes but right before you wash them you spray the stain. It didn't always get every stain out but most of the time.

For the stains; have you tried oxyclean? I love it- it works awesome on poop stains! If you get the powder you just put some on the stain add water to make it a paste and let it sit on the stain a bt before washing it.
I also love the Dreft stain remover! It seems hard to find around here. Literally I have to drive 30 min to the store that carries it (which is Babies R us or Burlington coat actory). I am not sure what sotres carry it but I personally have not had luck in my local Shaws or Stop and Shop.
For Diapers; I would try moving her to Pampers Baby Dry or maybe going up a size in the swaddlers?! Everytime my kids started having blow outs I moved them up a size and it seemed to be the cure...not sure if its a size issue for her?! Nothing is worse than a blow out!!!
GOOD LUCK!

Mother of twins here.... For blowouts, if I was at home, I got out the rubber gloves and used a scrub brush dedicated to crud and scrubbed the poop off under running cold water. Then I used Shout. At this point, it didn't matter if I washed it right away or left it for the next load. This worked the best and usually got the stains out.

If I didn't scrub the spot and just used Shout and soaked it over night, I would see a little staining.

I also used LUVS diapers. Not only did I see the least amount of the gel leaking onto the girls' skin with this brand (I tested all of them), but I had the best blowout ratios with LUVS as well. Make sure your diapers are big enough too.

Hi L.,
There is a GREAT product on the market. Zout is the name, you can find it in the area with Shout, Tide sticks,etc...
But it is awesome! My son plays football and it takes out ALL the mud and grass stains! I bet it would work!

On another note, I noticed that in your Bio, you are looking for a way to stay home with your baby. I have an opportunity that might fit into your plan. I have been home with my 2 boys for the past 10 years. Check out this link and email me what you think! This could be your "opportunity knocking" :-)

I had the same problem with my son. We used Pampers, Huggies, Luvs...the one that worked best for us was Huggies. We still had lots of blowouts though! I often wondered if my son was the only one to have this problem because I hadn't heard of many other moms with that problem!!

The only way I was able to save his clothes was with Fels Naptha soap. It's an old laundry soap and it's hard to find...I could only find it at Hannaford's. I believe you can buy it online also. It's very cheap, too...only about $1.00-$1.25. I give them as part of my gift for any baby shower I attend!

Good luck! The blowouts should get better once she's eating some cereal! :)

I had the same issues with the Pampers Swaddlers!! I use Huggies (when on sale) or the Stop & Shop brand and have had minimal issues with both of these. Also, check to make sure the diaper is the right size- both too small and too large can lead to blow-outs.
When my daughter does have a blow-out (usually a very liquidy bm that seeps out the top of the diaper onto her back), I immediately rub regular detergent vigorously into the stain and then let the clothes soak in the sink for several hours. All of the stains come out this way. I happen to use Arm & Hammer detergent (nothing special).
Hope this helps!

Have you tried Luvs diapers? They seem to be a bit wider than Pampers and Huggies. Once I tried them for my son in size 2, I was hooked - we have used them for 2+ years now. For getting the stains out try Triple Action Shout. I am convinced that stuff works wonders - including getting rid of stains from explosive diapers which we have had our fair share of. I typically put the Triple Action Shout on right away and then add Oxy Clean to the laundry when I do the load with the messy clothes. Hope this helps!

Hi L.! COngrats on your baby girl!

It has been my experience that Pampers were okay when the kids were very tiny and in a newborn size but if the kids have a generous sized posterior, Pampers doesn't offer very broad coverage. We use Huggies and I would suggest going up a size so that the diapers don't fit like hip huggers, sometimes that is your blowout culprit.

I wouldn't even waste your time with the cheapo diapers since their absorbency is poor and it seems they are more prone to rashes when they are put into plastic like diapers (they don't breathe)

As for cleaning the clothing, try two things: Spray and Wash dual power treatment stuff (hourglass shape squeeze bottle) Put it on the stains and let sit for 5 minutes before throwing the clothe sin the wash. You could also try white ammonia for tough spots. They recommend it be diluted but I use it straight out of a spray bottle, it is only a light mist anyway. You may wish to get the stain out then rewash to get the ammonia smell out.

Good luck, hope this helps! We do foster care so I have changed a bizzilion diapers and treated thousands of stains!

Had the same problem with my daughter from the start and for many months afterward until she started eating solids. I think this can happen with breastfeed babies a bit more. I used to come home from work, scrub the stain with a bar of Irish Spring soap (someone told me this worked) and then let it soak for a bit before I put it in the wash. Worked 95% of the time....only had to throw a few onesies away! FYI - my daughter is still frequent with her BM...goes 2-3 times/per day, but at least I'm not having to scrub her clothes out anymore!

Whenever we had blow-outs we moved up a size in diapers. Also, some brands have elastic at the top, and others don't. The ones that don't have the elastic do a pretty poor job of keeping in those poops that go up the back. Diaper effectiveness has a lot to do with your particular baby's shape. We had more luck with Pampers with one, and Huggies with the other.

Dish liquid, like Dawn, etc. does as good a job as anything getting out stains - use to scrub and soak pre-wash.

Hello L., well, it just may be time to move up a size in diaper. If she is in 2 move her to 3's. sometimes the more space given will elivate the "moosh" out the sides. Swadlers are good diapers, I had used them myself, I then switched to Huggies and they work just great also. I am a mom of 2 that are still in diapers, (abby, almost 3 and corbin 17 months) time flys when they are babies, and sometimes it seems too quick to move up into the next size item (either diapers, clothes, shoes). -- and don't bother with the weight size on the package, that dosent matter as much. Another indication that the diaper is too small, is your baby will be quicker to rash. As far as the staining, if I had the answer, I would be rich!! sorry, just try to clean them out as soon as possible. Good Luck!!! L. C.

I have the same problem with my son's poop, it goes EVERYWHERE!! Something that helped us, we went up a diaper size. It didn't slove it completely, however the problem happens less often now. Also for the poop stains, I put Lestoil on the stain and then let it soak for a day, that has taken every stain out so far. (for stubborn stains I many do it twice) PS... do what ever you can to stay home with her(cut back on anything and everything)because it is the best thing ever, you will never regret it, because the worst day at home is still better then the best day at work. Good Luck!

L. try Murph's Oil for stains. Pour on leave overnight then wash in hot water. You might want to scrub a bit while the washer is filling. This works most of the time. If it a stubborn stain you might have to really scrub. Hang in there this is a short phase and before you know it a new problem will surface. In the next year you will have more understanding of your mother and grandmother! Good luck and enjoy the time passes too quickly. Regards WiseReta

My daughter did the same thing around that time. Lots of blowouts..all up her back. It's real fun when you are trying to change her in the car. I found that huggies supreme helped a lot but didn't eliminate it. As far as removing the stains. I have always gotten all of them out with Oxyclean. I use the oxyclean spray. I just spray it on and throw it in the wash, or if I haven't been able to get to it right away and it dries or it's just really bad I spray it on and let it set for a few mins then rub it together and rinse, then repeat if necessary. EVERY diaper stain has come out. I love the stuff!

However, we haven't had to throw away any of his clothes due to stains. We use Dreft pre-treatment spray on all of the stains. We rinse the clothes off with hot water first, then apply the spray and wait 24 hours before machine washing. It has worked every time. I hope that helps!

Hi there!! I am so glad you asked this question!! :) I have written down a lot of the suggestions you received on products to use to get out the poopies! I am having the same issue. I have a 3-month old daughter and have a NEVER-ENDING pile of clothes I am trying to get poop out of!! With my son we had the same issue too. Moving up in size is a big help - with it leaking out the back. I guess it's a normal thing for babies to have such explosions!! I think I solved the issue of leaking out the back for her - at least at the moment! -but now she is leaking out of the legs. What a pain!!! I am a real stickler about trying to make sure I get the stains out of the clothes so we can maybe use them again or if I give them away they will look nice, but what a chore!! I used to use Clorox Stain-Out when my son had issues and it got out everything, but now I can't find it anywhere. I've been using the Clorox Oxy-Clean - and it just doesn't work. At least the spray doesn't. (It seems everything has jumped on the "oxy" bandwagon these days!!) As far as diapers, we were using Pampers but moved on to the Target brand, because that is what I use for my son. (they work really well and are SO much cheaper!) They were working well, but now the past several days she's been leaking through at the legs. I just bought Luvs to see if they will be any better, if they don't, off to try the many other brands!!! I will have to try some of the suggestions for cleaning the stains and if I have any luck I will have to let you know. But, as everyone else mentioned, try a bigger size on her - it will be longer and will catch the poop going up her back.

Good luck! :)

My little one turned 1 yesterday and we still deal with explosive poop (she was very premature and still has some digestive issues). Since it happens often I have found a few things that work...
Mostly I use cloth diapers. I don't use cloth exclusively due to current circumstances, but when I compared cloth to disposeables the disposeables had many more blow outs. I had the most blow outs and ick moments with Pampers. I have only used pampers on my dear little Layla while she was in the NICU and shortly after she came home (due to their extreme preemie sizes). They work well up to the newborn size, but then after that they made more of a mess than what they contained. So for disposeables I switched to Huggies. When I use disposeables I use the regular Huggies until they are walking then I switch to the Huggies Supreme since they more a lot more at that stage (I also have an "almost" 3 year old).

On one occassion my youngest daughter's blow outs were so explosive I decided to put her in a diaper of hers with one of her sister's larger diapers over top. It did the trick ~ AND the top diaper was sometimes reuseable since nothing had gotten on to it.

Introducing solids has helped, however, my little one goes more often than when just breastfed. It is more easily contained though, so in a few more months you can try solids :).

I also found Oxy Baby to work really well. It takes out most of the stains. The clothing that is permanently stained I put those aside and use them when we are at home and save the "good" outfits for when we go out. Since most of the blow outs happen at home it works out well for us.

Hope this helps :)

I had boy-girl twins and I finally had to settle on using Pampers for my daughter and Huggies for my son. I thought it might be just a boy-girl thing, but when my second daughter came along, I had better luck with Huggies on her. I think the different brands are better for different body types. And I agree with others, try going up a size or not using the Swaddlers anymore.

Best of luck figuring out a way to stay home! I know how hard it is. I've been able to find a part time job that has me working late at night 2 nights a week, so my kids are asleep when I go, and I sell Tastefully Simple, both bring some nice extra money that makes it possible for me to be home during the day with them.

Hi L.,
Same pee-pee problem with my 6 month old son. I used pampers till this issue too and switched to Huggies overnites for night time (we went up a size to 3, 16lbs, before he weighed that much too) AND added a Diaper Doubler to it. I get them at Stop and Shop and ther're like serious sanitary napkins without the adhesive backing. Another thing that has helped substantially and really was a cause of him waking up at 4:00 am soaked thru was that I learned to leave him for a few minutes in the night when he cried within 2 hours of his last feeding. I used to go to him every time (my first baby too) and nurse him and that was making him pee, ALOT. I used to nurse him every time he woke which was every 1.5-2 hrs. Now I just wait about 5 minutes when he starts to cry/whine and he shuts off like a switch and goes back to sleep. It's amazing! It took a couple of nights but only of 5 minutes of noices (not even always really crying) and he's out. I'm not a cry-it-out person and can't go much longer than that, 20 minutes once almost killed me when following book advise. Now I nurse him him at around 11 and 3, beditme at 7-7:30 and he's up around 6:30-7, instead of 10, midnight,2 4, and in out bed at 6. I'd pee the bed too if I drank that much! This started for us at about 5 months. I don't know about the poop issue except to say the Doublers are really only good for pee. They limit the "catch pocket" for poop and would only make it worse I think. Good luck.

Oh, been there done that, I don't miss it. The good news is adding solids made that much, much better. I had good luck only with the most expensive diapers, the pampers, and I went up a size. I did the band as tightly as I could, and I knew approximately when he would "go" or would notice, and had a holding him at the small of the back, aka top of the back diaper, and hold it there. I would use a rubber pant when had somewhere important to go. I tossed a few onies. And a few shirts, mostly onesies though. In two months you can add a little cereal, so you only have a couple months left at most. Hang in there. We called the phenomenom atomic pooping. lol I met other moms I am still friends with over seeking advice for this, they had atomic poopers too. Five years later, we are still friends.

last year when my son was sick with the stomach virus I used the plastic training pants over his diaper to contain everything (Target had them in a 3 pack for less then $5). Even now at night, I use the nighttime diapers. They work better at holding things in off the clothes as well. Good luck. I think with the clothes, try soaking them in the sink with liquid detergent, cold water and scubbing them before washing, hot water usually sets the stain in.

When we had blow outs with teh boys (2 , now 21 months) we were given teh wonderful advise to go up a size. Maybe that would help you too. What we found is that as long as they wern't in the diapers too long during the day then teh smaller size worked alright but at night we go up a size.

The stains...ugh. I did find a great stain remover: Caldrea Sweet Pea stain remover. I got it at Papaya Patch in West Hartford Center. It lasts forever and works really well. I tried to get it on the stain right when it happened and rubbed it in. If the stain is set for a bit before you get to it then do the same but add a little bit of the remover to the laundry load too. It worked really well and smells nice. :)

Good luck.

Hi L.,
I'm the mom f an 8 mo. old boy, Niko. We've had good luck with 7th Generation diapers, (very few blowouts). Also I like them because they are unscented. I think the frangrances they use in most diapers are irritating to baby's skin. (no diaper rash since we've used these) You can get them online at diapers.com for the same price as other diapers. (At the store they are a little more expensive because they are environmentally friendlier)
I have had good luck getting poop out of clothes by first washing by hand, then rewashing with warm not hot water. I use same brand of laundry det. and double rinse all baby clothes to get rid of any detergent residues.

Hi L.,

We just went through the exact same thing. From about 4 months to 6 months, Emma had at least one blow out a day. We tried numerous diaper brands and sizes and none of them seemed to help. (Normally we use pampers..swaddlers, now cruisers.) All I can say is that it will get better. (At least it did for us.) Once your daughter starts eating solids, things will firm up and stay in the diaper. Good luck and hang in there.

Oh, and rinsing the soiled clothes right away and then using oxi-clean right on the stain has worked for us.

I honestly found that pampers have beent he only diapers not to cause blowouts for little ones. I tried them all and now won't use anything but pampers! I also used cloth diapers while my son was real little and never had much issue with those, but that's a big adjustment. Just a thought, if the diaper is already saturated with pee maybe it blows out easier when she poops... maybe change her more often? I obviously don't know how often you change her or anything, but I know that it seems that when my son's diaper is really wet its more likely to sag and cause poop problems.

Wish I could be more help! Good Luck!

I also am a SAHM and run a business for myself on the side... its a great way to earn extra cash while being at home, and if you build it right you will have a residual income (in 2-3 yrs) that will keep coming even when you stop working. If you are looking to do something like this it's great to compare lots of businesses, and I'd be happy to tell you about a few I've compared and such. Good Luck again!

I really LOVED Luvs diapers...they could hold the Hoover dam I swear. No offense, but I hated pampers swaddlers after she grew out of the new baby stage...they didn't seem to hold much.

Poopie stains...I just started using Shout Advanced in the blue bottle, and LOOVED it. It took out dried sand from a white dress my daughter wore to the beach (and nothing could do that before) Even stains that have been through the dryer come out w/that stuff. Zout works well too. I forgot...you can go to Babies R Us to get it, but this stuff called Totally Toddler might work too. Works awesome at getting formula stains out.

Try checking out what your little one is eating, and see if that could be the reason why her poops are so massive. Good luck!

I really like the Pampers Baby Dry and Cruisers. I think they really hold everything in. Maybe the diapers are getting too small? That was something I experienced with my son.. there just wasn't enough coverage even though he was in the proper poundage range for the diapers.

I am a master at getting out poop stains... I use the Baby Oxi-Clean. It's a powder and you put the clothes in a bucket with some of this powder and hot water... let them soak for a couple of days or so... it's awesome... it really works! and the colors don't bleed out. It works so well that when my mother gave me a handmade christening outfit for my daughter that I had worn at my own christening and had unfortunately spit up all over and it had never come out - I used it... and the dress turned out perfect and unharmed! It is available at most stores - but specifically get the baby one.. not the other one - it has a pink cap. Good luck!

hi- my babe had lots of blowouts, particularly in public..ugh.
We used bigger diapers -one size up. pampers were the worst for containing them and after trying every brand, what worked best was actually Target brand.
Good luck.
