Losing Weight

I have tried everything under the sun and CANNOT loose weight. I have worked out everyday, HARD, and ate very small portions of food, skipping meals, etc. and did NOT loose a pound or inch. I joined Curves and worked out 3 to 4 days a week, watched what I ate and ended up gaining weight. It's as if my body refuses to be any size smaller than what it is. I am not extremely overweight, but would like to loose about 20 pounds (just a couple of years ago I only needed to loose 5 or 10 pounds).

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who responded to my request. A couple of you mentioned thyroid issues or other medical issues. Well, I actually had found myself hoping that was the problem (that is really sad), but I did have everything checked out and praise the Lord, all is fine. Kimberly mentioned a diabetic diet that she is going to send to me, so I will give it a try and let you know what happens from here. Thanks again!

If you want, you could try a weightloss doctor. The Steelman Clinic by Mercy hospital charges $200 for the first visit (full lab workup and EKG) and then $85 per month after. Each office visit charge includes the visit and diet pills for the month. They are very agressive with low thyroid treatment. Commonly low thyroid is a reason someone can't lose weight. They also give you different appetite suppressants, some are stimulants and some are not. My entire family has benefited from this clinic. Just an idea.

I am in the same boat, I would also like to loose about 15 pounds or so, so I just recently joined Weight Watchers and have been successful. Not that I am promoting WW, but it really did open my eyes up to what you should and shouldn't eat. Every morning I would just have orange juice and cereal with toast. Sounded like a good meal and come to find out that was a lot to eat for the size I am- IF I wanted to loose weight. I had to really come up with different foods totally to eat so I can loose weight. It has been hard, but I have some great recipes for you if you would like them. Good luck.

hi,
look into the blood type diet.
it is worth the $6 for the small book with foods that are good for your type. i kinda thought "whatever" but i tried it and was amazed at how much better i felt following it. and i dropped 10 lbs pretty quick, quick for me anyway. and when i eat the things i shouldnt i can sure tell the difference in my body.
check it out.
i am sure the pounds i lost were from retaining water.
but when i ate correctly i didnt bloat or retain water.
so that was impressive.

Hi D.,
Welcome to the crowd. It is hard to lose weight, especially as you age. I'm like you. It was so hard to lose that extra 10 lbs. It's a constant battle. Let me warn you, after menopause, you tend to put on extra weight. I know how frustrating it can be. It seems like you are doing the right things, ie. eating less and exercising. Maybe it's what you eat and when you eat. My rules for losing weight:

1. Do not skip breakfast.
By eating early, you increase your metabolic rate (the rate your body is able to burn calories). You don't have to scrimp on this meal, but stay away from donuts and pastries.

2. Snack healthy. Plan on a healthy snack between meals, so that you're not famished at meal time.

3. Drink lots of water and stop drinking all soda(you should be drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water a day). Drink a glass of water before each meal. The water will help to give you a feeling of fullness. Whenever you're thirsty grab a glass of water. After a while it starts tasting good, so refreshing. Tell yourself: "this is so refreshing." Before long you'll prefer water.

4 Eat a balanced diet. Stay away from the sweets. If you have a sweet tooth (I must admit that I do), allow yourself a small piece. I keep small pieces of candy bar in the freezer. I have to go downstairs, and only allow 1 treat per day. A lot of times I don't even think about it, and go for days without a treat.

5. Don't eat anything for 3 hours before bedtime. If you can cut out bedtime snacks , it really makes a difference in weight loss.

6. Exercise, exercise, exercise (at least 3 times a week). I love to do yoga. I do it at home. I have several CD's. I especially like the 'Rodney Lee' yoga tapes.

Good luck! Let me know how it goes.

A little about myself: I'm 59 years old, and look far younger than my years. I'm physically fit, and do some type of aerobic exercise (tennis, water aerobics or biking) twice a week, and do stretching (yoga) twice a week.

Hey D.~
Part of your problem could be that you don't eat enough. You need to eat 3 meals a day, (especially breakfast!) and 2 snacks. When you don't eat enough and skip meals your body holds on to all your extra fat and calories because it thinks there is a famine. Also, every time you eat something you get your metabolism going so keep eating all day to keep burning more calories. Try eating more during the day and healthy meals of course. If you aren't sure what you should eat do a little research on the web. Sites like ediets.com and thebestlife.com are pretty good but you have to pay. Good luck.

Hi D.,

I have had the same problem since I had my children. I do have thyroid issues however but even with the medicine it has been a struggle. I recently found the book The Omega Diet or sometimes is listed as The Omega Plan. It gives you loads of great foods to start eating that are good for your heart and overall health. It is more about changing what you eat than dieting although it does include a diet plan. I have been doing well with it and have started losing again. I have also found it easier to incorporate it into my dinner meals so the whole family is eating better. My kids are eating more fruits and veggies and drinking more water. I am thrilled! It is a good book. Good Luck!

Get your blood work done first to rule out any possible medical conditions.
If you get the all clear on that, then take a look at what you are eating.

Remember if you consume too little of calorie intake, you body will do the opposite and store food. Aim for 1200 to 1300 calories a day. Also jumping from a high calorie intake to a low calorie intake is not good either.

Do not skip meals 6 small meals is a good place to start. Eat your veggies and make sure you are getting fiber in your diet. Carbs are not bad, you just have to watch foods that are high on glycemic index.

Exercise strive for strengh training. The bands, free weights or cable weights all provide strengh training. You can do this at home. Cardio is good too. Strength training exercises that are done 2-3 x a week for 20 minutes yields terrific results.

Change your workout out, your workout shouldn't be easy to do. When it becomes "comfortable" add to it.

I like the website: http://www.sparkpeople.com/. It's free to join and the advice and tips are good/ realistic.

Of course: Don't forgot to drink your water.

Best of Luck!

Hi D.,

Here's a few tips that might help - keep a food journal. Write down EVERYTHING you eat for a week, then look at it and see what you're diet looks like. Like, after your kids finish lunch, do you eat the leftovers? If so, write it down. Passing the kitchen, and there's a cookie you take a bite of, write it down. All those small seemingly insignificant snitches add up.

CARDIO, CARDIO, CARDIO 6-7 times a week for 20-30 minutes. This needs to be done to where you are sweating. So, if you can get a good sweat walking, great, but push yourself each time to go a little faster or a little further or a little longer. This can be eliptical or treadmill or the new AMT machines. Once the snow melts, you can walk/run outside. If you don't belong to a gym and have access to that equipment, get a jump rope.

Drink water - half the ounces of pounds you weigh. So if you weigh 150 pounds, drink 75 ounces a day.

Start with those, and see where you're at in a week. The food journal will help with a starting point for food, so don't change anything with eating yet.

Hope this helps.

My husband feels I look great...and actually I know there are alot of people out there that have bigger issues than mine...I DON'T look terrible, I just know that I could look BETTER and feel better! I wish I had a magic cure and some life changing advice for you (and me) but I don't...just wanted to let you know you aren't alone out there! D.,

Maybe the problem is that you are not eating enough calories. When you deprive your body of much needed calories, i.e. too small of meals, skipping meals...etc, your body will go into hibernation mode...your metabolism will slow and your body will want to store everything you ingest as fat because it thinks it is starving. My suggestion would be to talk to a dietitian or a nutritionist and get your diet in line. If you cannot consult with one, try ingesting 2000 calories per day, eating small balanced meals throughout the day. I eat something every two hours and I NEVER skip meals, especially breakfast. Once you hang with 2000 calories for a couple of weeks, recheck your weight, if you are not losing, cut your calories back by 500, until you start seeing results, and of course keep working out. Change your workout from day to day, your body will also adapt to your workout if you are doing the same things each time and your workout will become ineffective.

Hope this helps

HI!I'm 38 and have the same problem. I was just wondering , were you ever taking the Depo Provera birth control shot? I have a 10 year old and 6 year old twins. I took the shot after the birth of my 1st child. I took it for 3 years and gained about 25 lbs. then I had my twins and got back down to my prepregnancy weight but have never lost the 30 lbs I put on from the shot. I too have done all the excersizing, diets, small portions and even fasting but none of it will come off. I know of alot of other moms who took the shot and had the same problem. some had alot of depression and anxiety issues with it too. When you feel overweight and can do nothing about it the depression hits hard! I know this is not very encouraging but there are others out there like you and we all need a solution. If you find one please let me know!

I'm not a weight loss expert, but perhaps you are not eating enough food so your body thinks you are in starvation mode and it's hanging on to that fat for dear life. Also drink more water and keep a food diary to see how much food you are actually eating.

I hear where you are coming from. Did you know that working out you will gain weight due to muscle gain/weight. I have lost 20 pounds since last March. I have quit eating anything white, ie white bread, russet potatoes I do red or gold sometimes, I use Spenda even in baking. I limit my sodas they will keep those pounds on you. I never had a weight problem until I married and left home. I got to thinking when at home mom had to fix dinner for dad a certain way nothing fried baked or broiled. I had PE in school everyday there was the exercising, plus living in a small town of 450 you either walked or road your bike. So after I left home I stopped doing all of those. My first husband loved meat and potatoes, corn. All those starches. My second husband isn't much better but now tha I a also a diabetic and he is taking meds as well I am attempting to start again like at home. We are planning on going to Germany next year to Welcome our son home from Iraq so have a lot to do for that, but that is not the reason, I just am tired of being tired and not feeling like I should.

Good Luck

I, too, struggled with my weight. I exercised 3-4 times a week, ate small(ish) lunches, etc. I tried for 3 years after my youngest daughter was born and COULD. NOT. LOSE. THE. WEIGHT! I did weight watchers and it was amazing. I've really changed the way I eat now. You can even do it all online, you don't have to go to meetings if you don't want or need that. It helped me with portions, too. Sitting down to dinner, my husband would take a big plateful of whatever, then go back for seconds. Well, I found myself doing the same thing. But when I knew I had to keep track of what and how much I was eating, it really made me aware. That's my recommendation, I hope it helps.

Hello D.. Losing weight is difficult. I have had success with the South Beach Diet and working out. The South Beach Diet is good for cardiovascular health and prevention of diabetes. There are 3 phases. The first phase is the hardest and most strict, but if you can make it the first few days it is a lot easier after that. The 1st phase is at least 2 weeks although you can do it a little longer. It helps detox the body. I have lost 15lbs in just that phase. The other 2 phases are not as strict and designed so that if you do slip you can just go back to phase 1. It eliminates bad carbs and sugars from your diet. Also make sure you drink plenty of water, and DON'T SKIP MEALS! It slows down your metabolism. You can get the South Beach Book in most book stores.

As far as working out goes I do cardio & strength training too! Try cranking up the intensity of your workouts or switching it up. Sometimes our bodies get used to doing something and need a change in our workouts to get over the hump. Oh and get plenty of rest too! Studies have shown that people loose weight better when getting plenty of rest to help restore and heal the body.

I have been dealing with this exact issue. I have always been small, and after the birth of my second child I was over 200lbs. I did manage to get down to 170 and then it just stopped. I too have had all the test run, vitamins, minerals, thyroid, hormones, the works. They all came back completely normal. I have been reffered to a weight loss specialist to see what may be going on. I too work out on a daily basis, I don't even eat red meat anymore. I did find that skipping meals makes you gain weight, only because when you do finally eat you eat way more than a normal portion. I have also learned that crunches are ok, but sit ups work so much better, since starting that I have not really lost a lot of weight, but my body shape is changing back to the way I like it. I also learned if you control carbs it really does work, I know it sounds like a fad diet, but really it helps. Cut out soda, cut out anything white and processed such as bread and rice. Eat only wheat and brown rice. What I do is try to keep it under 20 carbs a day, it is suprisingly easy and it has been working! I am so excited to see that my clothes are fitting differently, and after almost 4 years of trying to get this weight off it is finally working! Keep your head up and keep working at it. And if you can make an appt to see a specialist for weightloss. Take care!!

I too have problems loosing weight! Believe me the older you get it gets harder! Try this, about 5 years ago my daughter told me to cut out bread, pasta and potatoes. Pretty much all starches. I dropped so much weight it was amazing! BUT, remember, if you start eating them again you will put it back and then some. I am currently 49 almost 50 and I am working on my weight once again. I am now going to a weight doctor and they told me that when you are not a very big person to start with it is harder to loose also. You might try cutting out the starches a little at a time or none after lunch at all. Another thing is use only whole grain or wheat products. Let me know if this helps!

I have not read all the responses but have you looked for hidden calories? These would be do you eat a bite of this and a bite of that standing in the kitchen? What are you drinking? WATER is very important to flushing out toxins and such. Do you use measurements as well as a scale to judge your weight loss? Muscle weighs more than fat and if you are working out and producing more muscle your clothes will become looser but you may weigh more on the scale. You probably already know all of this it is just that sometimes we don't see little things like how much sugar we use in our herbal tea or coffee and so on.

Hello D.
I too had trouble with my weight for yrs and tried so many differant diets and even exercised alot and seemed to only gain weight instead of losing it, but I now know that it was all me and my way of thinking that kept me from losing weight I reallized I was harder on my self when I would fail and then would sometimes eat something that I told my self I couldnt have just because I already failed or cheated as we call it but I no longer call it cheating or failing anymore. I only give my body what it needs not what it wants but during the time when my body wanted a candy bar I would give it to it but only a very small peice and chew it up until it was so watered down I reallized the longer I would chew food the more I could taste and my body became satisfied faster you have to reallize it takes a good 15 min for your brain to tell your stomache it is full. There is one thing you can try, it is a good diet and exercise plan. I lost 30lbs on the diabetic diet cut out pop and sugar replace it with water and sub. sugars like splenda I could e mail you a copy of my diet and you could try it. It is simply counting carbs it doesnt say not to have any just limit your intake of it. Remember Keep track of everything you eat and how you feel before you eat(hungry bored sad happy ect. So many times I found my self eating when I was bored and never realized it until I started keeping track and NEVER eat infront of a TV or Computer. You want to alway be aware of what you eat and enjoy it reamember "you have to eat to live not live to eat".I could teach you how to do it if you like, just let me know if you are interested in doing this Ok. For exercise I mostly walked, fist it was for 15 min then when I got use to it it was 1 hour. It took me almost 6mo to lose 30lbs so dont think it will come easy or quickly but you will notice you feel better before anything else K. Hope I can help Oh by the way I use to be 315 and now I am 215 I am still working on it myself. I am a 30 yr old mom of 3. thanks Kim

Firt of all do not skip meals it make your body think you are trying to kill it. Second of all make sure you are not eating more then you think you are, like trying the meal as you cook it, cleaning your kids plates, mindless eating in front of the tv. Take some good snack with you as you leave your house to go to work or do earend so you will not be found your self hungry with no way out put the fast food line. Also if you do eat out eat broil, grill or bake food not fry Watch the amount and kind of dressing you put on your salad. The wrong kind and you might awell have a big hambuger. Also watch your carbs. Eat 3 maels and 3 small teats. I have lose a lot of weight but eating 31 carbs at meal time and 15 carbs at treat time. Hope this helps some.

You may be eating too little. If your body does not get proper nutrition it will shut down and go into survival mode. Then, it hangs on to every ounce of fat and worse, may cause your metabolism to drop so low that you gain weight!

I's suggest you ask your doctor what the appropriate calories are for you to eat and lose weight. Also, you'll need to find out what your doctor recommends for protein, carbs, and fat intake. I bet you can also get this information on the web!

I've found that walking 1 hour per day 5 days a week is enough to take off baby weight (I've done it 3 times now). But, you must be patient and eat properly too!

I have tried them all too and the only one that works is Weight Watchers. Studies have shown that exercising too much and not bringing in enough calories just turns the calories into fat to store them for later because your body thinks it is starving itself. Weight Watchers is realistic and a life changing goal, not a diet. I have been on it since the day after Christmas and have already lost 11.6 pounds. I have been on it before and always hit my goal weight (and then I get pregnant, but I now have 3 kids and no more) so this time it will be for good.

Good Luck

I know this sounds like it won't work but I've found that if I make myself drink a full glass of water when I feel like random snacking that I am no longer hungry. I also struggle with my love of food and know how easy it is to ruin all of your hard work with exercise and eating right by oversnacking, which I have a tendency to do! Make sure you are getting plenty of good nutritious (but portion-controlled meals) because you will be hungrier and your body will hold onto the fat if you are not. I also like to put a lemon slice in my water, it gives it some flavor and it's a natural diuretic. Good luck and keep up the good work! Especially the excercise. I know it's discouraging if you are not losing weight but you are still making yourself healthier and will have more energy for your little ones!

Have you ever had your thyroid checked. I never had problem with my weight until I got pregnant and they did all kids of blood work and such and found that I had Hypothyroidism, its when the thyroid is underactive and it makes it hard to loose weight. I am on pills probably the rest of my life for it, to keep my levels even. I mean if your working out and eating smaller portions and gaining, I would think its a medicla issue.

Good Luck

It is hard to lose weight but one thing you have to do and this do work for me is pray and ask God to help you control your hunger. Don't skip meals that is bad for you. Always eat breakfast to start off your day and have a mid day snack and have your lunch and evening meal. I been watching my weight and I ask God to control my hunger after 7p.m. So far it been happening. Also make sure you keep on exercising also. You can do it just ask God to help you.
