Losing Things at the Day Care
Hello
I have a question. When I went to pick my son at the day care they said that somebody took his Lunch Box that I bought last week with everything inside. His Water Bottle, plate and thermos food jar. That maybe was a new parent (first day of class). They said that they hope the parent realized and bring it back the next day.
My son has been in this daycare for 4 years. They said that they are not responsible for the material things, that they can't avoid these things happen.
I don't think so...If it doesn't come back, can I ask the daycare to reimburse me for it?
Please give me your opinion.
Thanks

Thanks everybody for your replies.
They found the lunchbox in another room. I don't know how it got there...but I am very happy that I got it!!!

How frustrating. I'm almost certain it will come back. I've had this happen to me and mine over the years and most of the time taking it was just a mistake.
Most contracts state that the school or organization or what ever the group is state that they are not responsible for lost or stolen items. You'll probably find a sign posted stating this fact unless it's an in home day care.

Unfortunately it happens all the time. My 8 yr old has been in daycare off and on since he was 6 weeks old. He has lost a few jackets, lunch box, etc. Most of the time they did make it back to us,luckily due to honest parents. Unfortunately this day and age, there alot of parents who don't care and don't pay attention. However, I don't expect the daycare to be liable for that, they can't watch every single kids belongings that come in and out of the daycare. I doubt they would reimburse you. Make sure the daycare is aware of it and on the lookout for the specific item. Our daycare even puts up a sign on the front doors, etc if someone is missing something.

If it doesn't come back in a day or two, I'd type a note and make copies for everyone in that room and tell the daycare that you EXPECT them to put it in each parent's hand.
As far as reimbursing you is concerned, do you have copies of the papers from 4 years ago when you joined them? Does it say they don't reimburse for lost items?

I'd let it go and not ask for reimbursement but definately let them know about it. These things happen every now and then. Hopefully, it won't keep happening!

*Adding this: A good way to label kids things is to use Sharpie pen. Permanent ink. Because, tags can be taken off. I label everything my girl takes to school.
Also, if a parent did take it by mistake, then there would have been 1 extra lunch box left, at Daycare that was NOT taken home.
But if not, then someone, took TWO lunch boxes home or something....
------------------------
Was your son's things labeled with his name? If so, I would find it REAL hard, to 'believe' that a parent/child could have taken it by mistake, unless your son's Lunch Box was EXACTLY like that other kid's.
And, it was not returned.
The Daycare said someone took it... was that by mistake or stolen????
How do they know?
I don't think it is their responsibility to pay for it.
Things like this happens at Daycare and schools too.
Some people steal. Some take it by mistake. But if by mistake, you would think, the person would have returned it to the Daycare. ESPECIALLY if your son's name was on it.
all the best,
Susan

If you have been going there for 4 years and this is the first time something like this happened, I would not make a big fuss about it. You don't want bad feelings and possible that showing itself in the treatment of your son. Sometimes you have to pick your battles and this may be one of those times.
That being said, I would just ask the staff to keep an eye out for it. Although if it was stolen, I'm sure an older child is using it for school and it will not show up again.
Good luck!

Remember that the teachers are there for the care of your child and while they do a pretty good job keeping track of the child's belonging they are not responsible if something gets lost or broken.

As frustrating as this is; if the daycare tells you up front they aren't responsible for lost items you really don't have any recourse. I'm sure someone will bring it back. I mean, really. Who steals a child's lunchbox? It's not like they can use it for their child. It already has your kid's name on it.
