Losing Teeth

Hi Moms. My oldest daughter turned 5 in January. I have a question regarding her teeth. She lost her two bottom teeth fairly young (right around 4 years old). The adult teeth are steadily coming in but now BOTH of her top middle teeth are loose. My question is, has anyone else had this experience so early in age? It seems all her friends in school still have all their teeth or have lost one. She'll be starting Kindergarten in the fall and already be missing 4 teeth! Everyone around me seems to be shocked and I just want to make sure this is okay. She has a dentist appt. on the 22nd of this month so I will be talking to the dentist about it then but I wanted to get some perspective from other moms out there. Thanks a bunch!

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for all the responses. It's nice to hear all the different stories. My daughter did teeth early (4 months) so it makes sense. Fingers crossed for straight teeth. ;) Thanks again!

My daughter also started losing her teeth steadily at 4. I was very worried when that happened. The dentist told me it's not the norm, but nothing to worrry about. She is now 9 and has lost most of her molars already. The dentist says her dental age is about 11. She is totally fine with no dental problems...... and she LOVES the tooth fairy !

All kids are different. My son is 7 and just today lost his third tooth. He has a buddy who, in Kindergarten, had already lost 7 teeth! There is a wide range of "normal" when it comes to tooth loss! Don't worry. She's fine.

My 15 yr old daughter started losing her teeth at early 4yrs old. My pediatric dentist told me not to worry and also told me that she would probably hit puberty earlier as well.

By age 10 she had lost all the teeth she was supposed to lose, had her 12 yr molars and a perfect set of teeth...no orthodontics needed at all.

She did begin puberty around 10 but did not start her cycle until 12.

Hopefully things will work out well for you.

My son is 6 1/2 and hasn't lost any teeth. He is the only one in his kindergarten class. All others have lost a wide range of them. He was an early teether as a baby (4 months) so I thought he would lose them early but so far no luck!!! I am sure she is fine. We are all different!!! :)

On the other side, my son will be 7 in a few months and doesn't have any loose teeth.
I know this doesn't answer your question but I thought I'd share how different kids are

My daughter was also an "early loser." That was just how she developed. No dentist saw a problem with it, other than it was more pressure to keep her adult teeth healthy with them coming in so early. My daughter lost all her teeth and grew in her 12-year-old molars by age 10. It seemed like the tooth fairy was coming all the time!

I've always believed it correlated that she got her baby teeth early too. She had four teeth at four months old! Did your daughter also get her baby teeth early?

Hello J.,
As the mother of 5 I can say that 3 out of 5 did this and so have 2 of the grandchildren so far. In fact one son's gums were so hard because he lost them so young that Dr. Crockett had to cut the gums so the teeth could come in. I am sure that the dentist after the xrays will be able to comfort your fears. This is only the first of many adventures in parenthood.

My son is almost 24, so it is hard to remember when he lost his first tooth. However, the kindergarten teacher had a "tooth chart" posted in the classroom, and my son was the only one who had lost 10 or more teeth. Most of the other kids had lost five or fewer teeth. My son started getting teeth really early, and I always thought that might have been why he also lost them early.

Both of my boys now 6 and 8 started school with teeth gone already however my friends girl who is 8 just lost her first. every child is different and and will loose their teeth at different rates. It is my experience that the more teeth your child has lost already the cooler the other kids think they are. Good Luck!

My son started Kindergarten when he was 4. He is 5 now. He lost his two bottom teeth just when he turned 5. His two tops are loose. about 50% of his class has at least one tooth out. Your daughter is a little early, but not too much I think... One of my son's friends had two teeth out when he started Kindergarten at 4.

Every kid is different. The time lines for loosing teeth are just averages and not concrete. She is just going to have school pictures with adult teeth while her classmates are going to have toothless pictures. No worries!

I've heard that the earlier they teeth as babies, the earlier they lose them when they're kids. Did she teeth early? My DD got her first 4 teeth at 4 months, so I'm bracing for early loss.

It should be okay as long as the adult teeth are coming in. My granddaughter is just the opposite. eight years old and hasn't lost one tooth!

Oh, yeah. It's normal. My oldest lost his first tooth at 3.5. Mind you it just now came in after 6 years of nothing. So be happy that her adult teeth are coming in sooner than later. My youngest on the other hand, lost his first two teeth just last year (age 5) and still hasn't had another loose one since and it took about 6 months for them to come in. He keeps telling me of all the kids in his class who are losing their teeth and he keeps trying to wiggle his baby teeth loose so they will come out. I think it's all cool. Everyone develops at different rates.

So glad to see other moms respond to this. My daughter just turned 5 this past weekend and she lost her first tooth two nights ago. it was one of the front bottom ones and the one next to it is also loose. I was a bit worried but now reading what others are saying with the same experience is comforting. She's going to the dentist next week. I've been slacking in that department, so now is a good a time as any!

Thanks all.

This is not too early. Many kids can loose their teeth at 5..

First off, kids develop differently. My son was missing his 2 bottom teeth when he started kindergarten, and half way through the year, his two top were loose. As long as the permanent teeth quickly follow the loss of the baby teeth, it was time for them to come out. The permanent teeth pushed the baby teeth out of the way. I wouldn't worry. Best of luck!
