Loose Tooth on a 2 Year Old After Fall

I have a two year old that fell and chipped his front tooth. It is also alittle loose. Has anyone else had this happen and if so does the tooth heal itself or does it end up falling out. I know it is only a baby tooth but I don't want him to go years without a front tooth. Should I take him to the dentist?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Thank you everyone for your responses. I'm going to go ahead and make him a dentist appointment just to make sure. He has a mouth full of teeth anyway so maybe it is time for his first visit. Thanks again!
I took him to Sunset Hills Pediatrics today and they took x-rays and checked his teeth and everything was fine. We go back for a 6 month follow-up.

If it's only a little loose it should be fine & tighten back up. If it's too loose he may end up losing it, but there's not much you are going to be able to do to stop it. My oldest knocked both of his front teeth out on separate occasions when he was 3 years old. One was completely knocked out & the other was just hanging there for a few days, but I hated for his first trip to the dentist to be to get a tooth pulled (there was NO saving it)& they said he would be fine if we waited it out as long as it didn't take more than a few days. It seemed like forever before he got his permanent teeth in.

We had something similar happen with a daycare child. She tried to climb out of her pack and play and pulled her front tooth outward on the bar of the pack and play. It was sticking straight out! She did go to the emergency room because we were not willing to do what the nurse said to do over the phone. We were told to pop it back in place and that's all anyone could do. Dad took her and when he did, the doctors in the emergency room were also afraid to do it. So they brought in a pediatric dentist and he did it. That's all he did. He told us to make her go back to baby food for a month. We were to push the tooth up into place many times per day and hold it there as much as he would let us. It was hanging down way lower than the other tooth. He said it had about an 80% chance of turning black and falling out. He said if it did harden up and stay in it would still change colors. So we went through the next month of pushing it up and bit by bit by week 2-3 it didn't seem to be hanging so low. It never changed colors and eventually it did harden up. It sits a little crooked in it's slot. But the great thing is that it stayed in place to keep all the other teeth from coming in crooked. Oh yeah, and it never changed colors at all. In fact, you wouldn't even notice it is crooked unless you know what she did.

Your sons tooth may have a better chance since it's not hanging down. Her's was barely in there. It would have taken nothing to make it come out all the way. You should be really careful with your son and not allow him to do any rough housing so that he won't hit it again. Also, you should feed him soft foods. Hopefully he likes yogurt, oatmeal, apple sauce etc. Let him have a lot of milk shake like products like Ovaltine or better yet, Slim Fast. It won't hurt him at all and is filled with vitamins. He should not bite on anything hard until the tooth is hard in place again. If it does start to turn colors, get more loose and needs to come out, then yes he would need to see a dentist and get a metal placer put in. That way his teeth won't shift and become crooked so that he needs braces later.

I would try to get him in a pediatric dentist so they can check for any other damage. We ended up there when our almost one year old fell hard and split open the top of his gum. The dentist got us in that day and was very good with him. I just felt better knowing someone had checked out all the teeth and looked for other damage I may not have seen. If you are in the Lawrence area Dr. Henderson is great and has a really "fun" office setting for kids.

My son is also 2 and he was running at daycare, tripped and hit his teeth on a toy truck. He chipped one of his front teeth and the one next to it was pushed into his gums. At the time we did not know what happened to the other tooth. The doctor wanted to do an x-ray but he wouldn't sit still long enough. He was about 18-19 months old when this happened...we thought maybe the tooth broke off along the gum line. He told me not to worry about it unless he started to get hot-cold sensitivity and/or it got swollen. The tooth has come down now and it looks close to normal (except for that other chipped tooth which almost looks like it's less chipped if that makes sense :)...if you're really concerned about maybe try calling a pediatric dentist...I have a referral for one but they're out in St. Charles. Let me know if you'd like the number.

Good Morning R., Yes it should be ok. Our son did the same thing as a child of about 2-3. It tightened up on it's own. I did take him to the dentist to have it checked
(short trip office was behind our home). One of our gr children did it also, they were ok and just recently got their perm. tooth in.
Don't give him any thing really hard to eat for a few days, he should be ok. The only thing you might want to check with the dentist is to make sure the nerve isn't exposed in the chipped part.
He should be ok R., it will tighten up.

Sometimes with little folks you feel like you want to put them in helmets, and body pads....lol they fall and bruise so easily. Corbin 4 now fell when he was about 2 I think and busted his forehead open, no stitches needed at all.
I didn't think my son would ever speak to me again...;) I maimed his son for Life. Can only see a slight scar if at all. I told him to look at his own knees and asked him how many times he kept tear up his knees falling off his bike! His answer 6, How many times did we tell you to stay off your bike until they healed up? 6. Geeeeeeeee Hon your still alive, walking and breathing...lol Mama's sometimes get all the bad raps...lol
God Bless

My neice fell and knocked all bottom teeth lose and also out. she went to the dentist and he pushed them back. and then she had to be very careful for a month and not brush them. and they are still in and ok! this was before christmas. so yes I would take her to the dentist. she was 3 or 4 when this happen

Take him to the dentist. The same thing happened to my 2 year old. Dentist needs to look at the tooth & roots. Our dentist told us it could take 3 months for it to turn black...so you have to watch it for a while. We see Dr Steven Mingos on the Plaza. If that is close to you, ask for nancy as the hygentist & Dr Mingos as the dentist. Tell them what happened so they can get you right in.

Take him to the dentist. Baby teeth are important for more than just aesthetics. The hold a space in the mouth for permanent teeth when that time comes. Besides, he should be getting his first checkup soon anyway and you can just get the exam done too while you're there.
