I have hypothyroidism and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions how to get rid of the belly bulge after having a baby. It's been almost a year and my ab area still bulges. I have heard from many people that Hoodia Gordonii is great at suppressing the appetite to help out with the hunger cravings that still linger after child is born. Any good ab excercises in mind also? I would like to get back down to about 130 lbs/size 12 pants as to where right now due to my belly being so big I weigh 170 and wear a size 16 pants.

What can I do next?

I'm right there with ya. Same sizes and everything!! I've lost about 20 lbs since I had my baby, but I'd like to lose more. What I have to watch is my junk food intake. I'm bad for sitting and watching tv and eating chips or pizza. Once I started cutting that out I started losing weight. I have many family members that have lost a lot of weight with weight watchers, you might look into that. I know if you exercise ALONG WITH watching what you eat it's a lot better, but because of my thyroid problem, it seems I'm always tired and can't seem to get motivated to do that just yet. Good luck to you.

What Mary Anne said is basically the South Beach Diet. It's easy to do, you get to eat often and good quantities, and you're eating healthy as well as losing weight with minimum exercise and no supplements. If you want to tone the belly, I'd try some Pilates. You can pick up a DVD to do at home for $15 or $20. I have one that is an hour long, and even doing half of it at a time is a HUGE help.

D., I tuely understand. I found out I had throid cancer when I was pregnant with my last child. I had surgery to have it removed when she was 6 weeks and have been on syntroid everysince then and will be for the rest of my life. It is very hard to lose weight with a thyroid problem, as it affects your metabolism. Talk to your endo before you change your diet or start any diet pills. They can and will affect your TSH levels which can be very dangerous. If you need a great endo let me know I have a few names I can give you

i have an under active thyroid so i am also hypo, which i take 75mcg a day. my baby was born in october. i have lost pretty much all of my weight but i still have a pudgey belly. here recently i bought a work out video from kmart called "bikini body. belly, butt and thighs". it seems to be helping a little. it would help alot more if i was to use it more often. so perhaps you could try that. it would be worth a try. it was only $9.99

This really worked for me. I got a trailer for my bike. It has mesh and tinted plastic, pockets to hold cups or toys, and it turns into a jogging stroller. It holds 2 kids, but I used it with just one for awhile. I bought my daughter a toddler helmet and we tried to go out everyday. I didn't go far though. I live in town and we would just go to the library and post office, and if it wasn't too hot we went around a few blocks. I don't know how it works, but my whole body toned up. I lost a few inches and gained muscles in my arms in legs in just 2 months! I hope this helps you a little.

Hi D.,

I understand! I had a honeymoon pregnancy and my husband was leaving to be deployed to Iraq for one year 7 weeks after I gave birth. I wanted to get back to my size ASAP. here's what i found works: Try to eat as much all natural and whole grain as you can. Get in as much lean protein. Stay away from white flours and hydrogenated oils and animal fat. Try not to eat past 7:00 pm. if you do the above, it allows you to eat a wide variety, stay healthy, not stave yourself and lose weight (especially in the stomach fast). best of luck to you!

I would definitely talk to your doctor and find out what restrictions, if any, you have with exercising. There is no magic way to lose weight. Even with the pills, you still have to make changes in your lifestyle. When I finally decided to lose the last ten pounds of my baby weight, I did 20 minutes of cardio, plus weight lifting (alternating upper body and lower) 4-5 times a week. I also ate a bowl of Special K two meals a day. I would wake up, go to the gym, come home around 10 and have a bowl, and then around 2 or so, or whenever I got hungry again, I'd have another one. I ended up altogether losing 16 pounds in a matter of a couple of months. Also, just so you don't go in with high expectations, during the first 5 weeks or so, I didn't change my diet, and was only exercising, and I didn't lose anything. As soon as I cut my diet though, the weight literally melted off.

For me, nothing worked until I started building muscles. I had success with free weights and with yoga. I do both first thing in the morning before the baby wakes up or after he goes to sleep in the evening. Once I put on a few pounds of muscle all the baby fat came right off. Muscle is really the only way to boost your metabolism. Drugs and herbs are only temporary fixes and dieting will only slow your metabolism down. Bewarned, you make gain a little weight at first and fat over muscle looks a little funny until it burns off. And, keep in mind that doing yoga and weights everyday and it still took me 6 months to drop from a size 12 to a size 6. Good news is that I've kept it off.
