Looking for Saved SAHM Friend(s) in the South Garland Area

My husband and I moved to Garland in February with our two kids and I didn't think it was going to be this hard meeting people in the area. We go to church in Dallas so all my friends from there are kind of far away and whenever I go to the parks in our area there's never anyone there!? Both my kids and I are starting to feel kind of cooped up and we would love to find someone in the area to hang out with/meet at the park/library etc. My daughter is almost 3 and my son is almost 18 months and they're both in the wild stages so they need more entertainment than I'm able to provide for the most part. My husband and I are in our early 30s and we live off of Broadway and Wynn Joyce.
We go to a non-denominational church and we're kind of laid back as a family, but I long for more of God and would love to find like minded moms to share life, family issues and friendships with who live in the area since we're dealing with the family-with-one-car-who-goes-to-work-with-husband-on-most-days-issue which is quite limiting sometimes.
So if this is you or you know someone who lives in the area or know of a mom's group that would fit the bill - just let me know! I would love to get to know you!
Love, T..

Dear T.,

BEEN THERE!!! I'm in Garland not far from you. Moved here in '03 with my then 15 mo old and had no one I knew. Then health issues really limited my ability to get out. As everyone else mentioned-MOPS was a God-send for me. I was so starved for companionship by the time I got to one that social anxiety didn't stop me-nor did being very pregnant at the time. My current closest friends were a result of that MOPS group. That group broke up and I never went to another...

I know there are several in this area but rather than juts refer you to them-how about you contact me through here? My oldest child is now 7 but my youngest just turned 4 and both are little girls. I KNOW my youngest would have fun with your oldest! She's very outgoing.

It's good you have a church family but I know from first experience that it's hard when you don't live in the same area despite being close. Our first church family after moving here was located in Mesquite which isn't that far really but it does make a difference. Everyone I knew was there or further...

Just in case you're interested we just began visiting a new church and we're delighted by it. It's just a small group of sincere people that meet in the Firewheel Movie Theatre. I realize that sounds really strange but if you'd like to check it out here's the website: www.livingwaychurch.com but no pressure!

Oh-I'm in my early 30ies as is my husband too. He's typically not availible for social events but I'll explain that if you contact me and want to know. Hang in there! I'm here if you want to chat/get together.

Hi,
I will put in another suggestion for MOPS! There are MOPS groups for SAHMs and also working moms. Of course, the SAH groups will meet during the weekdays.
http://www.mops.org/
If you have not heard of them before, they are a Christian organization, usually meeting in churches. They have speakers come in to talk about Mom/family/spiritual topics. You are assigned to a group so you will see the same moms every time.
Good luck,
M.

This MOPS suggestion below is good, I do think they break for summer.
You might want to try another church. You could meet people close to you and save on gas. But could always go to your old one once in a while - like once a month or something. I go to Lakepointe church in Rockwall (I live in Forney), but they have many locations - Firewheel center, and near Town East mall would be the top choices for you. I attened a womens bible study there last spring that was great. Topics are different at the different locations. And I know the one in Rockwall has MOPS, maybe the others will.
I certainly understan being cooped up. The kids and I go crazy after daddy's been at work a day or two. I joined on online moms group for mesquite (maybe there is one in your area too or you could try to start one), but we haven't been in a while, money got tight when husband lost his job in April. I know they meet at the mall everyother Monday morning. My kids like the McD's at I30 and Broadway, but I try not to drive that far every week. They are 4 and 2.5 yrs.
Here's a couple of websites.
http://rockwall.lakepointe.org/ -one link can link you to all the locations

I would whole heartedly suggest to you MOPS International. (Mothers of Preschoolers) Go to www.mops.org and you can look up the different churches that have this. It is interdenominational. They have programs for the kids while the moms get together for a speaker or crafts and they do a lot of extra activities during the week.
I am a mentor mom in one of the groups and there are a lot of moms who say this group really helped them have some great friends.

I am a born again beliver in Jesus Christ. My boys are 17,15,12 and I own my own Professional Organizing business but I would love to talk with you.

I've just turned 39 and live in the Richardson area. My husband and I go to Lavon Drive Baptist Church in Garland and have been teaching a Bible Study class there on Sunday mornings 9:30-10:30 for almost 10 years. We love digging into God's word.

If you would like to meet that would be great.

My children are older, but I remember when they were young. We go to a church in Dallas and didn't change when we moved to Garland. I had the same problem of not meeting Mom's in the Garland area. So, I started going to the MOPS group at First Baptist Garland at Avenue B and Glenbrook in Downtown Garland. That would not be very far for you. I feel like they are my second church. My kids went to Mother's Day Out there and have done the Upward Sports there. That would really be the best way to meet other Moms in the area. There are probably other MOPS groups in South Garland also that you could check out.

Also, there is a Garland Area Early Childhood PTA. I think they are more in the North Garland area, since that is where most of the growth is, but they usually have meetings at parks, etc. Check out the preschool activities at the South Garland Branch Library (at Broadway and Oates). They usually have lots of activities in the summer. You will have the opportunity to meet other Mom's and preschoolers in the area.

Sorry my response is late! Another great link for a mom's group near you is www.momsclub.org. You can look up the group by zipcode. Good luck!
