Looking for Pthalate Free Baby Wash and Lotions!

There are a lot of products out there that are "natural" or "organic." Many of these products don't say if they are pthalate free or not. I want some products that definitely state this!!
I know about Burt's Bees. The wash is OK... but I really don't like the lotions. I've tried many, even the adult lotions and creams. I want something nice smelling, or if that isn't possible.. unscented. Does anyone know of any other products?

Dr. Bronner's is great. If you order online, they do not charge shipping or tax on orders over $20.00.

have you tried Melaleuca? If not, you might think of looking into it, and if you need help, send me a note and let me know. I am a representative as well as a customer.

"California Baby" available at Target. Look for Super Sensitive wash and lotion, which are also frangrance free. I love their products, and a little goes a long way!

Hi T.,
Look at California Baby- I purchased their sunscreens since I am so allergic to sunscreen- it is the only one I can use. They have lots of natural products.
www.californiababy.com is their site I believe

Take care!

We've been using Young Living products for ourselves and for our son from the day he was born. They're safe enough to eat. They are made from therapeutic-grade essential oils. Besides the body wash and lotion, they make a wonderful-smelling diaper ointment, shampoo, and child's toothpaste, We also use the essential oil blends Gentle Baby directly on his skin and Peace & Calming on his clothes or ourselves. It's amazing how much they help him calm down and be able to fall asleep more easily.
The Thieves wipes, cleaner, hand soap and hand sanitizer have been invaluable to us too in having a safe way to confidently protect him from germs. Now that he's an active 2 year old, we're also glad to have the Melrose oil blend for when he gets a cut or scrape.
You can check out these and more at www.youngliving.com or .us
To order, you can email me or order direct at a discount by signing up under our number 771678 and distributor name, New Waves Wellness Center.

Hi T.,

Terressentials (www.terressentials.com) makes *certified USDA organic* stuff for babies and the whole family. They use "only ingredients that have been certified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for use in organic food, meaning the plants have not been exposed to toxic pesticides and fertilizers, irradiation, sewage sludge or genetic engineering"--they're essentially food grade. They list all the ingredients of their products on their web site, so you can see there are no synthetic fragrances. To avoid phthalates in personal care products, one can start by avoiding products that list the vague word "fragrance" on the label. Products whose fragrance derives from essential oils are safer, as is the case with Terressentials' stuff. They also have fragrance-free products (great for sensitive skin, pregnant women, or newborns). Terressentials is a Compact for Safe Cosmetics signer--it's a pledge that about 500 companies have signed to agree to formulate products that do not use ingredients that are known or suspected to cause health harms. My own concern for avoiding phthalates in personal-care products brought me to Terresentials.

Some manufacturers, exploiting consumers' desire for products without a specific chemical, will state that their product is free of that chemical, even though it nevertheless contains other harmful chemicals.

A good source to find "safer" products is Skin Deep. It is a database put together by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), independent researchers. And it lists and rates thousands of products according to the safety of their ingredients. You can also submit a product to be rated, by entering its ingredients list. They also have good little info sheets you can print out and keep in your purse--stuff on what to avoid in products for your children. Skin Deep: www.cosmeticsdatabase.com

As well, there's a new (2008) edition of *SAFER FOR YOUR BABY: A Guide To Living Better with Fewer Chemicals*, by Lynn Tondat Ruggeri, Ph.D. and Laura Costa, Ph.D., two women who have researched the safety of lots of stuff consumers are exposed to. Their book "provides simple ways to protect you and your family from harmful chemicals commonly found in personal care products, food, cleaners, toys, plastics, pesticides, home furnishings and much more." See www.saferforyourbaby.com. The new edition is available at EARTH SONG BOOK STORE, 1440 Camino Del Mar, and is about $10.

I also found this great blog/site: Julie, a mother who is a self-confessed beauty product enthusiast, who has decided to go green, tests and rates products that have a good safety rating as determined by the Environmental Working Group.

Good luck!

Hi T.,

I too recommend Arbonne's products. They are formulated under the European Union's strict guidelines AND they are pthalate free. You can find many products that are "natural", "organic" and or pthalate free but Arbonne's products actually WORK! My older son used to break out from sunblocks & have mysterious rashes from different baby products, even the so-called natural products from health food stores. He's never had a problem with the ABC line. My 11m old baby has eczema & the ABC is the only thing that has worked for him. The scent of the ABC products is very mild & comes from the botanicals used in the formula. Arbonne does not use synthetic fragrances. Also, I didn't see anyone mention the mineral oil issue. Check your labels for that too. It's a derivative of crude oil & is not beneficial to your skin. It doesn't absorb. It's widely used in the cosmetic industry because it's cheap.

I noticed a lot of references to EWG & the Skindeep database. I have to add that I love what the Safe Cosmetics website is trying to do BUT please know that their database was collected and STILL is being collected by allowing consumers to enter products with lists of ingredients. As a result, there is a lot of inaccurate information in their database, ie. products listed that have never even existed, ingredients listed that do not match the labels of the products. If you do a little research on their website you will find that they are aware of the inaccuracies. I have emailed them on various products & there is no response. Maybe they don't have the resources to keep this database updated. Just make sure you read the labels for yourself if you are using that website as a resource.

I think Aveeno has no or low pthlate levels. I found a website that measured the levels in various products and Aveeno tested as one of the best!

Hi T. H.
I am an independent consultant for Arbonne International which is Swiss formulated skin care, and other health and wellness products (vegan certified). We have a wonderful baby line and we do not use phthalates in any of our products. It is not stated on the bottles, but I verified it through product development. Let me know if you want more information about Arbonne products. My e-mail address is ____@____.com. Great question-others may be interested, too.

Also, this is weird (in a good way) because I have a 5 year old girl. I taught second grade for 5 years and have been a Reading Specialist for the last 8 years at an elementary school. I also have my masters degree in education. We seem to have much in common.

have you tried Melaleuca? If not, you might think of looking into it, and if you need help, send me a note and let me know. I am a representative as well as a customer.
