Looking for Obstetrician

CONGRATULATIONS on your pregnancy. I grew up in Hawaii and the two main delivery hospitals are Kapiolani and Queens. Queens is known to cater to the mother; Kapiolani is the best in the Pacific for high risk pregnancies. Kapiolani is a teaching hospital and I'm not sure of the exact statistic now, but they were in the top ten hospitals for the number of deliveries. What that means is they deliver a LOT of babies. There are times there are women in labor waiting for rooms, because they are so busy. If there are very serious complications with the baby, the baby will often be transferred to Kapiolani, regardless of where you delivered. Queens has a reputation for being less busy, but still very good. Kaiser also delivers a lot of babies, but it didn't sound like you were using that HMO.

I had both of my children at Kapiolani with Dr. Peter McNally. Since his office is in the hospital, if you go into labor, he doesn't have to leave his practice to meet you in the hospital.

I recommend you find an OB/GYN quickly. There is a shortage on island, mainly due to the high malpractice insurance premiums and low insurance reimbursements. There are some doctors that aren't taking new patients. My co-workers two-doctor OB-GYN clinic just closed because they said it wasn't profitable, yet they were always busy.

I'm also a military spouse in Mililani and I'm 15 wks pregnant. I also decided against delivering at TAMC. But instead of joining your company's medical, have you considered switching to Tricare Standard? It's a simple form and you're pre/post natal care and delivery are 100% covered (except you have to pay about $12 out of pocket for every post partum day you stay in the hospital). I switched over for my last pregnancy at a birth center and didn't pay a dime.
I'm seeing Dr. Bhattacharyya in Kailua (delivers at Castle Medical Center). He came highly recommended from the natural childbirth community. I can't really give an honest review yet since I've only had a few appointments and I saw the PA each time.

My name is A. and I live here in Honolulu. I know exactly how you feel about not wanting to have your baby at TAMC. I recently gave birth in July and my baby boy will be four months next week. My husband is Navy and I did everything in my power to avoid going to TAMC. So anyhow, I had a wonderful doctor named Dr. David Kim. He has an office on Kapahulu and in Pali Momi hospital. He was the best doctor. I gave birth at Kapiolani hospital. I wouldn't change a thing about my whole pregnancy experience with both the doctor and the hospital staff. I hope this helps you. Yes, I would not go to TAMC. Kapiolani hospital is the best in the pacific rim for birthing and high risk situations.

Kaiser has a few great OBGYN's...I understand your fears of TAMC! I live in Mililani & have a few friends that stay away from there! If you don't mind traveling to Mapunapuna, Kaiser...Dr Kimi Hirabayashi is awesome!...Since you live in Mililani the Kaiser Waipio is closer & they have a few that I find great, too. Dr. Wong, Dr. Nuanez, & Dr. Dimarchi...

I LOVED my OB - Dr Gwendolyn Chung in the Ala Moana Building (right beside Ala Moana Mall). Her partner (Dr Diana Huang) is also great. It's a bit of a drive for you though, but if you don't mind the drive then they are worth it in my opinion :)

Ps- Queens is also a great place for delivery - at least look into it if you haven't already ;) They also offer great pre-natal class, if you wanted to do that :)

Congrats to you! I go to Dr. Cheryl Leialoha. She has an office at Kapiolani Hospital. I had my 3 babies there. She's a great Dr!
