Looking for New Car- Need Input

Hello moms, I am looking to buy a new car. I have not had to buy a car in almost 10 years, and I am giving up my dream car (98 Mustang Convertible) to have an easier time transporting my 3-1/2 month old son (he doesn't fit very well in the back seat). I was not expecting to have to trade my dream car in (as we didn't know we were going to adopt until January- it sort of fell in our lap) My question is this- anyone have 4 door cars they highly recommend? (I am looking at Mishibishi, Nissan, Mazda, Pontiac, Honda, and maybe Volkswagen- I want at least a V-6 or a 4 cylindar with lots of Horse power, fuel economy is good too). Any cars I should stay away from? Any good dealerships you would recommend/or ones to avoid?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I bought a Pontiac G6 sedan. I came very close to getting a Honda Accord, but the dealership was awful and did some illegal stuff, wouldn't give me enough for my trade, and wouldn't come off the price of the car at all. I am perfectly happy with my G6 and at this point would recommend it and the dealership I bought from to anyone!

Hi S.,

I know this a is a little late in answering, but wanted to go ahead and let you know. My husband works at Ewing Automotive Group and sells Buick, Pontiac and GMC. He can either sell new or used, whichever you prefer. I'll give you his contact info if you're interested. Let me know.

Thanks,
C.

I love my VW Passat. We are leasing it from Autobahn in Fort Worth. It is an awesome car however we are not in need of two brand new cars now that I am a SAHM. Would you consider taking over a lease?

I would go with a Honda. I drive a 2007 Civic right now and I LOVE IT!!! I have also had two Accords in the past. One I wrecked, and it saved my life...the other I had to sell. Honda's are fuel efficient and have the highest re-sale/trade-in value. I know someone recommended the Chevy Impala, but I rented one once and it was horrible on gas. With the prices as high as they are now, fuel efficiency was my biggest selling point when I went to look for a new car. I had a Dodge Neon, hated it; I also had a Nissan Maxima, also hated it. Another good car is the Toyota Camry. The Corolla is nice, but it has no get-up when you accelerate and it felt smaller inside than the Civic. However, the Camry is bigger and you can get a V6 engine, which isn't an option on the Corolla. Honda is still better, but Toyota is a good second option. Good luck!

Stick with the Honda sedans. They have the highest residual value. Good luck car shopping!

I would say start with Honda and Volkswagen. Volkswagen of Lewisville seems to be a good dealership. Congrats and good luck!

I bought a Honda Pilot 2 yrs ago and love it. It is a small SUV with up to 8 seatbelts. I usually keep the back row folded down for storage, but it is nice to have the extra row if you ever plan to carpool. I bought mine at Frank Kent Honda off HWY 80 and 820. They were very professional without all the games. Good Luck.

S.,

Looks like you are getting a lot of good feedback.

If you want a car with a third row seat, I have the Chrysler Pacifica Touring. I love it. I have bucket seats in the back and two additional seats when we need it. When we don't need the third row I have plenty of storage space. It's a great family car.

Hello S.! You can't go wrong with Nissan. I highly recommend the Altima (4 dr sedan, V6)- one of the best cars I have ever had!! Go to Bankston Nissan off of 635 & Welch- they are by far the best Nissan dealership in the DFW area.

In fact, I just traded in my Altima for a Pathfinder, simply because I needed an SUV to haul stuff. I am an interior decorator and haul construction materials all the time. Otherwise, I would have kept my Altima forever. It is like having a sports car in a sedan body. TJ Jabbar was our sales guy- super nice, extremely helpful- did a great job.

Good Luck car shopping! Once you go Nissan, you never go back :)

I have a Honda Accord and love it!

As far as dealerships, I would avoid Freeman Toyota at all costs. They did some horribly unethical, actually, no--illegal things when I purchased a vehicle from them in the past. I have had great luck with Huggins Honda and they always do what they will say they will do.

Mazda Mazda Mazda!!! I have a Protege (now a Mazda 3) and it's a wonderful car. It fits my four year old comfortably and at over 86,000 miles, besides tires, I've only had to replace one barring on it. Not bad for a car that has that many miles on it!! I drive the heck outta that car!! It's still sporty enough (I've got the 5spd and LOVE IT) to not feel like a "mom's sedan", even though it does have 4drs. I would recommend any Madza though. My first car and my hubby's first car were both 1986 Mazda's and we both bought them used and finally had to retire them in 2002. And we were able to sell both of them for a decent amount of money even that old with a lot of miles. That says something about the quality of Mazdas. Plus with the price of the new models, you really can't go wrong. I would say test drive as many as you can. I test drove Chevys before I bought my Mazda and they were like driving a tank. Also, my friend bought a Jetta the same year I bought my Protege and her car was SOO uncomfortable and the instruments were really in a bad place. Volkswagons are not known for their interior.

One more thing, if you plan on a bigger family in the future, I would get something that will fit everyone now. I bought my car in Jan and found out I was pregnant in March so I do wish I would have bought the 626 (now the Mazda 6) at the time. But I still love my car and it can hold SOOO much, and the gas mileage is amazing. Good luck!! Oh, we bought ours at Hiley Mazda on Bryant Irvin in SW FW. Excellent service.

As far as which car, I can't help much there. I drive a Ford Explorer with the third seat. I absolutely love it, but it is not great as far as fuel efficient. But as for dealerships, we have bought our last five cars at Car Max. They are really easy to deal with. The price on the tag is the price of the car. No haggling. And the prices are comperable or better than traditional dealerships. The extended warranty program is the best anywhere. And when you buy a car there they give you the best trade-in price when you come back. Good luck!

Hi! If you're willing to look at domestic brands, the Chevrolet Impala is great. That's what I had until my third child was born, at which point, we had to go mini-van, mainly because my oldest didn't want to be squeezed in between two car seats, lol. For just one child though, it's awesome. Large interior, and the trunk is huge. I jokingly would say I could put the contents of a small apartment in there, if needed. As far as research resources go, try edmunds.com. You can compare makes, models, new, used, prices, features, whatever you want on there. Hope this helps!

Nissan's are wonderful cars. Altima's and Maxima's have the best horse power and are very roomy. My family has driven Nissan's for years and have had very good luck with them. My dad had one that he had over 300,000 miles on it before it gave up.

I bought a Honda Accord LX back in 1999 when I was pregnant with my 1st child. Three children later and 190,000 miles later I still ove my car. I have only had to change out tires and brakes. I have been on trips across the country and it's trunk is huge. My father is a mechanic and he recommended it to me and that car has never let me down...oh yeah and the new ones are really nice looking as well, best on gas miles, and highest resale value. 8 years and I love my little car. Just my two cents.

I just purchased a 2007 Honda Accord 4 cyl. on Friday and love it! I did a lot of research before I purchased it. I bought the Consumer Guide book and Consumer Reports magazine and did a lot of comparisons. The Accord received the Best Buy in it's class everywhere I looked. I test drove the 4 cyl. and the V6 and the 4 had a lot of get up and go and of course better gas mileage with 29 City and 34 Highway. I got the 4 dr. EXL sedan so we could get our son in and out easily. The other two that are also "considered" in the research I did was Nissan Altima and Toyota Camry. If you're into a lot of extra options, you get more for your money on a Honda at a reasonable price. I found on Toyota, they added alot of the options as extras and it cost more. I didn't look at the Nissans, so I can't help you there. If you have any other questions feel free to email me. I live in Denton and purchased our car at Jim McNatt. I could even give you the guy's name we worked with. He was not one of those high pressure sales guys. Good luck in purchasing your new car.

I just bought a new Nissan Maxima and would recommend it to anyone, it rides great and has TONS of room while still looking sporty. When it comes to cars you can NOT go wrong with Honda or Nissan, I have had both, and they retain their resale value better than all other makes. You can rest assured that in a Honda or Nissan (or Toyota) that you will still have something to drive 10 years down the line if you decide to keep it that long.....
On the other hand do NOT buy a Mitsibishi. I bought a brand new Galant when my daughter was 3 months old and still am so very upside down on it, (almost 4 years later). It was the most uncomfortable car I have ever owned, and will not even look at anything that says Mitsibishi now.
Just my input, good luck shopping!!!!

I recently bought a car at Allen Samuels--I would definitely avoid them. It is not your nicer dealership--a little like a used car place. I couldn't even give them a negative review because the salesman told me it would reduce his salary for 6 months if they got anything less than 100% satisfaction, which I thought was pretty manipulative. They were not upfront about all the details and could not get us the deal we wanted. Good Luck.

Mazda 3 is a great car! I listen to 570 in the morning and the owner of a mechanics shop in Garland highly recommends them!
He's done all his research and talk non-stop about how great this car is!!
I'm purchasing a car in the next 3 months and I'm trying to decide which would be a better investment: Mazda 3 5dr or a Lexus IS 300.

Good luck and let us know what happens,

We have had years of wonderful experiences with Honda. Currently, I have a Honda Pilot from 2003...change the oil, fill with gas and go! We have two boys, car seats and "stuff" and alwasy fill it up! We also keep the thrid row seats folded down unless we have visitors. It is nice to have the space when needed.

We have used Huggins Honda several times and they are very nice, no high pressure sales and good support.

We have shopped at Allen Samuels one time. We were treatted so poorly, we will never go back. It was a few years ago, but it seems that they have not changed.

Good Luck!

I, too, had to give up my dream car - a 1995 Mustang GT convertible! So I'm feeling your pain! :-(

I now have a 2005 VW Jetta TDI. It still has plenty of "get-up-and-go". Its not as roomy as a sedan, but it does have 4 doors and the baby seat fits nicely inside. I feel it is still sporty enough, yet is funtionaly what I need. We have had it a few year now and still love it!

Oh, and we bought it from Boardwalk VW. It was the best buying experience I've ever had! We still go back for service and still like the dealership a lot!

Good luck!!
