Looking for More Info on Fifths Disease

Hi,

I just read Staci's post asking for adivce on Fifths Disease. I also read all the responses and I have some more questions: I think my daughter had Fifths a few months ago as her cheeks were really red for about a week. They weren't red all day, just sporadically throughout the day and there was nothing on the rest of her little body so I wasn't sure what the heck it was. Since it was appeared not top bother her at all and went away relatively fast, I didn't follow up. Reading about Fifths has got me a little scared because I was about 6 weeks pregnant when she had this. I didn't know it could harm my unborn baby then so I never even mentioned it to my OB.

Does anyone know if I had to have actually contracted Fifths and had the symptoms to pose a threat to the fetus? Or is exposure alone sufficient for potential harm? All I have heard is that it could lead to problems such as miscarriage- is that the only risk or is there also a risk of non-fatal fetal injuries? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Please do not post any judgments.

Thanks so much- R.

What can I do next?

I would call your ob. They will have you come in for a blood test that can tell if you have had it. Unfortunately it wont tell you when you had it. If you did catch it though then they can check out the baby.
I know it is not hard to stress. I did when my son had it and I was 6 months pregnant. Those websites freaked me out even more. The dr.s told me I probably would have known it if I had caught it through my son. And the chances of me catching it were pretty slim since it was mainly transferred through saliva.
My tests showed I had never caught it.
Good Luck to you! Take a deep breath and try not to stress (easier said than done-I know)

R.,
I did not respond earlier because the other moms answered your question pretty good. But I will give you a little more info. Fifth Disease is a disease caused buy virus mostly young children contract it, a rash on cheeks and limbs. Parvovirus 19 is another name for it. It is really common, my kids both had it when they were little. Adults can develope this and the virus can cross the placenta and infect fetus. I would get a second oppinion and maybe have your self checked, but they would of caught it in you while pregnant I would think. I wouldn't worry yourself to death, just keep an eye on her as far as fever and any blistering that may occur, (but mostly don't), my kids got it and they had little water like bubbles on their skin but it went away with time and never came back. If she is getting enough to eat and plenty of liquids this will pass like all viruses such as colds. Good luck.

I would get it checked out because I know someone who was exposed and lost her baby during her 5th month. I was also shocked that there was never anything mentioned about it during my pregnancies. You would think it would be in the literature that they give you because obviously if we are of child bearing age we are around kids and can get exposed.
Best Wishes,
J.

My son had 5ths not to long ago. And I am also pregnant. They did a blood test to see if I had the ammunity to it. Good thing I did. Most people are exposed to it when they are little and they dont always get the spots. Im sure you are fine if you haven't had any simptoms of it, but if you are worried you can call your doctor and they will do a blood test. If you have any other questions let me know just send me an email or something.

Hey R.,
I am not sure how serious it is but when I took my son in to urgent care yesterday they did say something about if a pregnant woman HAD Fifths Disease that it could cause birth defects in the fetus. I guess there is a blood test that can tell if you have ever had it (even when younger). I would think of it as the same as the chicken pox. They say that it can be harmful if a pregnant woman contracted that as well. If you did not have it I would think it would be fine. The best bet would be to contact your OB/GYN. They would definately know more then I or anyone else that is not trained in this area. Good luck to you and I hope that everything turns out well for you.

Everyone pretty much gave you all the info you need except it's most dangerous in the first trimester. I had a friend lose a baby (about 10-11 weeks) when her other kids got it while she was pregnant. We had an exposure at my son's preschool a couple months ago and I was really worried since I was in my first trimester at the time. I let my midwife know and they tested twice for the parvo virus to see if I had an immunity to it. If you are exposed to it as a child you don't have to worry about it. I had not been exposed and therefore did not have an immunity. Luckily, fifths didn't hit my son's class so I never was exposed to it.
