Looking for Help with Milk Lose

About two months ago I had mastitis (sp) for the first time in three childbirths. Ever since this time I have slowly been loosing my milk supply. I have had to supplement with formula in order for my son to get full at each feeding. I am currently to a point where my milk is almost completely gone, I feed maybe once in two days. I can't really afford to go to formula yet as we are financial strung out for a few months, and my son is only 6 months old. Do any of you have any ideas or suggestions on how to get my milk back? Is it too late? Also, I have started onto regular birth control pills (which I know can effect milk supply), will this cause a problem with getting my supply back? I appreciate any feedback and help with this issue.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all so much for your advice. I have received many different suggestions and I am going to try as many as it takes to find a solutions. I really appreciate your input. As I have a long way to go to get my milk supply up, I don't have anything big to report, but I am so grateful for the advice and ideas. I am hoping that this will help me reach a solution to my little problem. Thanks again!

I tried Fenugreek seed (not the mother's milk tea, that didn't work). I think 2-3 capsules 2-3 times/day. It seemed to increase in a couple of days. No too expensive can get it at King Soopers.

I know that you can get your milk back by continuing to nurse. If he will nurse every couple of hours, do so. The more you nurse the more you will get your milk flowing.

good luck. mb

hello, my advise would be to pump a lot ! also, DO NOT take regular birth control pills ....they totally dry your milk up! you need to take progestin only pills. they have the same effect as regular pills but they are more time sensitive. hope this helps!

A.,

My sister, had the same problem. She started drinking Mother's milk herb tea. She says it tastes gross, but worth it, because it is definitely working. Her daughter is allergic to all formula, and can only have breast milk. She was desperate, and this has worked for her. She drinks it frequently during the day. I hope this helps. Also, I agree with the other ladies, keep nursing, that will help too.

Sincerely,

V.

It's not too late! It will take a little time and effort but it isn't too late. I HIGHLY recommend that you call your local La Leche leaders for help. If you are in the Nampa area, Tammie has successfully helped moms relactate as we say. Go to www.llli.org. There is a search for local leaders in your area go to Idaho and Canyon County and you will find her number. If you are not in this area, search for the area you are in and call the corresponding leaders.

Best of Luck!

hi,

have you ever been to Becoming Mothers in Boulder? it's a maternity/breastfeeding store (that i actually work at), and it would be worth it to stop by...i don't mean to sound like a salesman, but the advice we typically give moms in this situation is to rent a hospital grade breastpump (preferably a Medela Symphony)and start taking More Milk + (an herbal suppliment made by Mother Love)to re-stimulate your supply.

Ditto Jen and Marcia. Take the mini-pill instead of regular birth control and nurse, nurse, nurse (and/or pump, pump, pump) - as much as you can as often as you can.

I would pump pump pump. One of things you don't want to do is frustrate your son by having him nurse when the well is dry. If you pump you will be able to increase your supply then feed it to him in a bottle or mix it with formula. Your milk supply will increase as you pump, just as it does when your child grows and his demand increases. Once you notice you are pumping a greater amount you can start to nurse more often. In the meantime continue nursing some of his feeding then pump right afterward!!!

As well, by pumping you can more easily gauge the actual amount of milk you are producing, which you cannot do if you straight nurse. As you go along it will allow you to see how much of an increase you are getting in your attempts. While you are pumping massage your milk ducts to encourage milk flow which encourages more production.

When you have found that your milk has increase enough go back to just nursing! And make sure you are drinking A LOT OF WATER. If you are not your body will fight your attempt to produce more milk.

Hi,
There are a couple of things you can do. First I am sure every one has told you to drink a lot of water. Next nurse your baby every three hours whether you have milk or not if you can get him to latch and nurse it will help to stimulate your milk supply. If he won't latch use a pump every three hours. If you don't have a pump and he won't latch and nurse you might be in trouble. It is not too late though. You can also ask your doctor for a prescription for Reglan. It can sometimes help to increase your milk supply. But really the only thing that will really increase your milk is by nursing more or pumping. Good luck. I hope your milk comes back.

A.: sorry to hear about your milk loss. I know when I was pregnant with my first daughter 28 years ago, my sister's mother-in-law was a registered nurse and into natural remedies. She suggested that I make a drink of powdered milk, black strap molasses, and brewer's yeast (find all at a health food store), which she said would help me to produce milk. I first took a 20-24 oz mug, added the ingredients (I think it was 1/3 cup milk, 2-3 tablespoons of molasses, and 1-2 heaping tablespoon of brewers yeast, do it to your taste), and then filled the mug to the top with hot water, stirring really well and then drank it. Don't drink it when its cold. I know that the smell, the taste and the ingredients are not very appealing! and its bad enough to drink hot, but it is worse when it is cold. After a week, I finally acquired a taste for the drink and continued to have one every day. When my daughter was born, I had so much milk that I constantly soaked through pads and for months, my daughter only came out to eat every four hours after nursing approximately 5-10 minutes on each side. I was told that the brewers yeast and molasses would provide a iron rich and heathy natural milk for my child.

If you can get through the taste, I seriously would suggest doing this. I don't know if it would help now at this stage nor do I know how long it would take to build your milk supply back up, but anything is worth a try. I did it with all three of my daughters and was very glad I did. Please let me know if you decide to try it and what the results are. Best wishes.
