I am looking for a great cake shop to do my son's first birthday cake/smash cake. I really would like something a little more original than the standard Byerly's 1/4 sheet flat cake, so I'm looking for a shop that does cute creative things. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi Di,

I know a mom who has her own cake business called Enticing Icings. She does the cakes for our birthday party program at my community center. Her name is April Notsch and she can be reached at ###-###-#### or visit her site: www.enticingicings.net.

There's a place in Coon Rapids, called Retha and Sandy's Sweetshop. Prices are pretty good and the frosting is different than most cakes. We used them for our Wedding and I've bought several other occasion cakes from them. They stock the normal cakes in their refridgeratiors, but they will do custom type cakes too. Usually for weddings, but I'm willing to bet they'd do a different cake for a birthday too.

There is the BEST cake lady down in Savage, well worth the drive. Cakes are BEAUTIFUL, she'll make anything you want, AND, the taste fantastic!!!
Her name is Gail Geist, ###-###-####. She did our wedding cake, and you wouldn't believe how many people took seconds. She's the only place we go now for cake! And, extremely reasonably priced. :)

I had a Byerly's cake. I can't remember the name of the cake, but was a large round cake on the bottom, with a small wind-up musical carasel in the middle and it had a smaller top cake with a carasel cake topper on it. (no candles needed) It was a little pricy, but for a 1st birthday, it was worth it. Ask Byerly's about it. You assemble it yourself and the top cake can be for destroying, while you serve the bottom cake to your guests. It was the HIT of the party...everyone LOVED it!

Woulett's bakery is a great suggestion. I've gotten a few there, but none for birthdays, but they do anything you want.

I have a friend that makes the most darling cakes. And they taste amazing as well! Where in the metro are you? She lives in East Bethel but works in New Hope. I am more than happy to give you her name and number if you like.

I got our daughter's cake at Dorothy Ann Bakery in Woodbury (it's near Sam's). They do a GREAT cake and would do a cupcake for your son as well. You can take in a napkin or something from your decorations and ask them to match it on the top of the cake. Probably most bakeries would do this.

Good luck and congratulations!

Honestly the best cake we've ever had for our childrens parties have been homemade cupcakes.

Easy cleanup nad you can get sprinkles and gel frosting at the local grocery, do it how YOU want.

We have also done Ice cream cake which was a great success as long at the party is indoors.

Best of luck and happy first birthday sweetie!

I can't remember the name of it, but there is a specialty store for cake/candy making supplies at the strip mall in Fridley on University Ave. It's the strip mall with Paper Warehouse and Northwestern Book Store.
I went there once at Christmas Time and I couldn't believe the amount of things they had for making and decorating your own cakes. It's very reasonably prices too.
Good Luck!

There is a cake shop in Crystal on West Broadway that does really cute and good cakes called the cake shop. Otherwise, there is a little grocery store on W. Broadway and Bass Lake Road called Thrift Way and they have little personal cakes that are very cute and just the right size for a baby. If you are interested in doing your own or choosing your style from many and having it made there is a cake decorating store up on University almost to Northtown. It's in the same little mall as once upon a child up there. Good luck and enjoy!

I hear wanting to have a cute cake for your son's first birthday. I am trying to do the same thing. I wanted to offer a couple of things. First, Byerly's does do first birthday cakes for free if you bring in the birth certificate. I don't know how enticing that might be for you, but I thought I would share that information. Second, I would suggest A Piece of Cake for cute cakes. Their phone number is ###-###-####. Hope that helps!
