Looking for Entertainment for 23 Month Old with Broken Leg

My 23 month old daughter got her leg caught in between our box spring and the side board when she was getting off of our bed and broke both bones in her lower leg. She is in a splint right now and will go into a regular cast Wednesday. She cannot walk on it at all and she is usually a rambunctious child. It hasn't even been a whole day and she is already bored. Besides, finger paint, coloring, playdough and reading, does anyone have any ideas for entertainine her or has anyone been here before? I don't want for her to miss out on alot but I really don't know how to entertain her all day every day for a few weeks. I am also 20 weeks pregnant so the carrying part is already having an effect on my back. Any suggestions how to get through this? Thanks

What can I do next?

Don't know how large of a house you have but since it has been so hot lately and I cannot take my 18 month old out for walks in her "push car" so I push her around the house. Maybe, if you have enough room to maneuver one around the house, you could get one of these. She'll love being pushed around in it and it will help with the carrying part.

HI J.! I was not sure if she was able to sit in a stroller with the splint, but you might try planning some small outings in a stroller. Maybe the zoo, or a walk around the mall, A trip to the library, The Discovery Science Place, Walking trails to listen for birds and play I spy, or a trip to the ice cream parlor. The library also has free video rentals (you could get a new one each day) it might give her something to look forward to! Save all the crafty stuff for the after outing time. Best wishes! God bless you!!

I am so sorry. That is all I have everyone has given you alot to think about already. Especially the outings, but ga why does it have to be so hot. Good luck for you and your lil girl. I am so sorry this happened.

Poor thing! I hope she heals quickly. Try Leap Frog Books or some toys that have many functions. It'll take a while to explore everything and get bored with it. My son has a little piano that has 3 modes and several functions and the functions change with each mode.

You got a lot of good ideas.

This may be the time for her to learn about being quiet, listening, entertaining herself, etc. All children no matter what age, need to learn this skill to some degree. At her age it is only going to be minimum, but she still needs to know how to be able to sit in a chair and listen to someone for 5 minutes.

I had a rowdy one and I know how hard it can be at times. I would think she would be on pain meds at this point and they would be calming her down? When our son broke his arm he lay around on pain meds until he got his cast. Those meds kept him pretty quiet for the most part. He watched tv, listened to music, read, and slept. His was a bad break also- both bones in the forearm. And they want bad breaks to be as still as possible because of the bones shifting around. ugh

Oh, be sure to call beforehand and make sure about how they are going to set it. I was not aware of it, but recently someone told me they will heavily medicate young children to set bad breaks (avoid the trauma, pain, and fear). Therefore the youngsters cannot eat breakfast before the procedure. So you may need to call and check on this.

After the cast. I would look into preschool for this fall. ;-) All kids love to be around others their age. She would still learn a lot, get to move around more and you could get some rest. Once she has a cast and crutches she is going to be going as much as she can, I think. LOL If you have a good teacher, she will just take it in stride and keep going.

Good luck

Gosh so sorry for your little one. I would suggest buy her a few computer games. Also they have kid laptops as toys with fun games. Build blocks are wonderful to play with on the floor. You can teach her how to cut paper and make stuff. how about dressing her dolls with new clothes. Piano with micophone. Put her in the stroller at the mall, outside at the park let her swing or play in the sand box but put jeans on her, go to the Muesum and the Zoo. Have I given you some ideas. I hope so.
Good Luck...

Oh wow! I have a hard time entertaining my 2 year old being pregnant 31 weeks now. I feel you with the back pain. My daugter weighs 30 pounds and is over 3 feet tall. She has no idea what that does to a pregnant lady! Anyways, your poor daughter! I would suggest puzzles as well. Legos are fun (the big ones) so she can create. We have a table that we bought on Ebay that's made for legos, but they also have those "plates" that she can put in her lap or on a regular table and use to build on. Otherwise, the library usually has some good videos that are interactive like Dora. While it was raining so much this summer we started looking for those that would let her answer questions or act out situations. Most can be done while still sitting. Otherwise, I am quite lost as to what to suggest. Good luck to you!
