Hi moms, my son is 16 years old and going into 11th grade in High School. He is a very bright student, doing all Honor classes and we are hoping to apply for the "Florida Bright Future Scholarship". Fingers crossed as with economy and being a mother of 4 I NEED scholarships for my children!! Anyway, for this scholarship he needs 80 community hours. He already has 13 from doing hours at out church. However as you can see we need a whole lot more!!! I have tried to get him into summer school camps, but all this positions were taken really fast from past students that enroll every year. He is a very good boy and is great with children and people. I have tried getting him to assistant in a dentist office and other local offices (as he is thinking to go into the medical feel) however no one seems to want a student looking over their shoulder. I have talked to a lot of moms who's children get their hours from volunteering at their own employment. But this is because the parent works there and the child has a way in. I would not think it would be so hard to VOLUNTEER your time for FREE but it is. I have tried pre school etc and all say that the employees AND volunteers have to go trough huge background checks etc and because of this they do NOT take student.

So does anyone know how or where I can get "volunteer/community hours" for my son? Also does anyone work some where that need a good, hard working 16 year old boy? Thank you!!!

PS: I am located in Western Lake Worth.

What can I do next?

I am a high school teacher (11th grade actually) and offer my students volunteer hours for doing things like organizing and filing papers, making copies, tutoring. I put the offer out there in June for students to come into school the week before school starts in August to help me move my classroom and put up my bulletin board displays and posters. If your son has a favorite teacher (or two) he may email them -----(teacher last name, first initial)@palmbeach.k12.fl.us or find their link through Edline and offer this help. Call the guidance dept. at his high school to see if there is anyone on campus this summer that would like his help. Some of the guidance counselors and assistant principals work most of the summer and may love some help with organizing and filing... especially in the week or two before school is back in session!
Good luck!

I don't know if he likes animals but Peggy Adams Animal Shelter always needs volunteers to walk dogs and such. Its on Military Trail a little north of Okeechobee Blvd. I had a great time voluteering there and helping the animals. I guess you would just have to make sure it counts for what he needs it for. Hope this helps!

Your son can help my brother with his "Adopt and Author" program. He is a NY Times Best Selling Author who lives in Wellington. Call me and I'L. hook him up. (haven't asked my brother yet, but imagine it'd be ok.)

Also, he can volunteer at my ex-husband's chiropractic center in East Delray if he wants. He is all about community service. Elias Forma ###-###-####
