Looking for Books/stories to Read to 5.5Yr Old About Being a Good Sport
I have a 5.5yr old son who is very active in sports, he loves to play just about anything, he has been bowling since he was 2, went off bumpers at 3 and now avgs about 100. He is very good at sports, and they seem to come easy most of the time. What I am looking for is to find some books or stories his level, we can read about being a good sport, it is not all about winning, having a good attitude, that kind of thing. He gets so miserable sometimes. I have had some help from a local hockey player, who has told him to have fun, in a letter he wrote to him, and I point out pro athletes that are having fun, not getting upset when they are not doing good and that sort of thing. Please let me know if you know of any books that I can get for him. Thanks in advance.

There are tons of books and the internet makes it so easy to find them. I used to work at a book store in the children's section and these are the books I could remember.
1. Brendan and Belinda and the Slam Dunk! by Anne Rockwell(she has a series on sports)
2. Cork and Fuzz by Dori Chaconas(If I remember correctly this is a series as well)
3. The Last Place Sports Poems of Jeremy Bloom(This book is great, kids learn about poems in kindergarten)
4. Oh Beans by Ellen Weiss
5. Good Sport Bad Sport by Jerry B Jenkins
6. There is also a sports series by Matt Christopher, he writes chapterbooks.
7. The Berenstein Bears
You can go to amazon.com or barnesandnoble.com and type in good sport and see what comes up. Good luck. I hope this helps.

Try the Berenstein Bears. I know they have a book about "teasing" that is sports related, many cubs at school tease a bear who isn't very good at sports and they find out he is a a good wrestler, and I would bet there is a good sportsmans story too and if not maybe closely related. If my son wasn't already in bed I'd grab one of the books and check the back for the other titles. Good Luck!

I was just looking for some presents online, specifically sports toys and books when I remembered your request. On Amazon.com I searched the "children's books" area for "sports". There were 2 books of poems about sports (including ones about being a good sport) as well as chapter books and informational books about sports. Perhaps you can get additional ideas there.

I have a son who is 14 and is the same as your son. It is very hard to teach a boy to be a good sport when the sports arena is filled with big boys who never learned this idea. The biggest thing we do is limit the amount of professional sports that he watches. My husband stays involved and plays a lot with him and his friends. Also, just talking to him about how to respond when he wins or loses. I don't have ideas of books, but things we have geared towards are people who display good character. If you have ever watched Chariots of Fire, Eric Little is a perfect example of good sportsmanship. Hope this helps.

My kids are a little older now, but I remeber the the Berstain Bears had pretty good books on a variety of things. I think they had one on being a good sport.

Being a Bad Sport (Let's Talk About Series) by Joy Wilt Berry
You can go to the library in Browns Mills, I think they have a copy of this. I got some the other day and the girls love listening to them. They are kind of old school, but you can buy the updated versions.
