My daughter is turning 10 and I'm looking for an idea for a party. Does anyone have any interesting ideas? We've done the swim party, bowling party and cake decorating before this year. Thank you!

When it was my daughter's 10th...we went to "Build A Bear". She picked 6 friends to come along...they have $12 packages, where instead of goodiebags or whatever, each girl got to "build a bear" or animal of their choice for $10-12. Anything extra, they paid for themseleves. Then we went for pizza and cupcakes. It was a great time for everyone. My daughter is going to be 16 now...and STILL has her bear from that party.

You can call your local beauty school and see if they do parties, what is consist of is a hair sytle and nails for each child. When I did this for my daughter it was only about $8 a child. Then we went to the local pizza place and had pizza and cake. The girls loved it, some had up dues, braides etc.

What about a "Dress-up Party" (lots of fun), or a "Libby Lu" party (fun, but not fabulous), or a horseback riding party (call a stable listed in the phone book, or check the Chicago Parent for names)? My daughter had fun with a dress-up party a few years ago. There was a place in the western suburbs (not too far from Yorktown Mall) that did everything. Check the Chicago Parent advertisements. If a good movie is coming out you could try a movie and pizza party. We did that once at the Marcus Theaters in Orland and went to Connie's Pizza right across the parking lot. Connie's Pizza has a separate room where you can keep the kids under control. We even did a little limbo game in that room. I brought the limbo stick and music. If you can keep the girls under control it could be fun.

You could also go to the American Girl store. Lunch is probably cheaper than dinner, and if you are inclined you could walk to a movie theater after lunch. I do not recall the name of the theater, but there is one a few blocks away.

Oak Brook Park district has a nice sounding set up for parties. You can combine a swim party with other things. I think they have some sort of indoor obstacle course that sounded fun, although we never ended up doing that. If you are feeling energetic you could organize a Scavenger Hunt, perhaps around a theme that you think you daughter might be interested in.

Lots of kids do "Sleep-Over" birthday parties. You could combine some of the ideas above (or below) with a sleep-over.

If your daughter is "outdoorsy" "The Farm" in Palos has some tame, but pleasant birthday party options. Lifetime Fitness has a birthday party setup too - you choose two of three things, i.e. swimming and rock climbing. If you want to do swimming again, Bolingbrook Park district has a nice setup with a reasonable price.

Good Luck!!!

My sister has a daughter, and she wanted to keep it simple so she had a pizza party where everyone made their own pizza. I am not sure if it was a sleep over too, but it sounded like a fun, simple party idea. You could look for cute "cheap" aprons that each girl gets to take home.

My daughter will be 10 this year. I don't know if your daughter is to old for this, but last year I took her and three of her closest friends to Libby Lu in Oak Brook. They all got glamed up and madeover with a goody bag of their choice. Then we went over to California Pizza Kitchen and all the girls sat at their own table while I sat with my girlfriend at my own table. The girls then got picked up and I spent another hour just with my daughter shopping and picking out her present from me. She absolutley loved it.

Just a suggestion but, when I was that age my Mom would take me and about 3 of my closest friends to a hotel (William Tell off LaGrange Rd) me and my girlfriend had a blast. The hotel was a holidome so there was sooo much for us to do. After the pool closed we would make necklaces, eat pizza, cake. It was only a few of my freinds but, it was such a blast. Something I'll never forget and probly something i'll offer my daughter.

For my daughters milestone fifth birthday we went to Pump It Up in Crystal Lake. It has two rooms with several large jumpy things (like the ones you rent for the kids to jump inside, but much bigger).

My daughter, her cousins, and friends loved it. One of my friends arranged for her son's birthday party there later this month after attending.

The kids love it. Here is their web site if you want to check it out.

If she is planning on inviting both girls and boys, how about a skating party. But if she is just inviting girls a sleep over is always fun with the theme being what ever she is interested in. You could also have a tea party.
If you had a sleep over you could also have someone come in and manicures. Young girls love to have their nails done.

My co-worker recently asked me to come over and do a scrapbooking party for her 10-year-old girl and girlfriends. They had a blast putting the scrapbook together--something none of them had ever done before. BTW, we just made the layouts--I didn't ask them to bring pictures. I brought over all the supplies (albums, paper, stickers, etc.) and the mom paid me a certain amount/per girl. Before the workshop, the girls had pizza... and after the workshop, the rest of the evening was a sleepover. I heard the next day that they just had the best time...

Hi there S.... What about a gymnastics party at the local park district, a lot of park districts do different ideas like that. Hollywood Boulevard in Woodridge shows movies while kids can eat while watching the movie. Miniature golf once this weather finally warms up. You mentioned you teach dance, what about a dance party? Maybe have a party at the house and hire someone to come in and give their girls mini manicures?

My daughter will be 11 in May. Last year we partied at SisterArts Studio on Wrightwood in Lincoln Park (sisterartsstudio.com). Crafts or needlework activities and BYO eats. It was lots of fun. Before that we've been to Putting Edge near Harlem Irving Plaza. It's indoor glow-in-the-dark mini golf. There's also an arcade and snack shop. Fun if you don't mind loud rock music in the back ground. Your boys would probably enjoy it, too.

My sister is now 14, however when she was that age we took her and her friends to Fired Up to paint their own pottery. They had so much fun and you can control the cost by letting them choose a piece around your budget (they have a lot to choose from). I know there a lot of paint your own pottery places in IL. Ours in particular let us bring in our own food and drinks, but we found the girls were more interested in painting than snacking. Hope whatever you do she has a great day!

Our triplets turned 8 in November and we took them to a hotel in Warrenville called Spring Hill Suites. Each child was allowed to invite 5 friends. They let us use the lobby, the tables were already there all we had to do was decorate. They had a big sign welcoming the kids and their guests. We were allowed to bring in pizza and cake. After they opened all their presents everyone went swimming for 2 hours. The parents picked up the kids and we stayed the night! Another party is a Nancy Drew party. You could set up a mystery and have kids solve it with little clues around the house. As for a scavenger hunt they could hit the neighborhood playing "Bigger or Better". You give the group a penny and they ask the people if they have anything bigger or better to trade. They trade that item at the next house for something bigger or better. They keep going until the time limit is up. Also you can have read to them 2 minute mysterys as a game to see who can solve the crime!

Good Luck

Oh what fun it is to plan a birthday party. When my daughter turned ten I thought we had done just about everything there was to do and I had no idea what was next. Luckily she was such a girlie girl and had her own ideas of what she wanted to do. She decided she wanted a tea party. Everyone got to dress up in their mom's clothes, pearls, heels and all big feathery hats and were served tea and finger sandwiches (pb&j and cold cuts) with crumpets (cookies and mini donuts). Fortunately she has an older sister and cousins who agreed to serve the food and beverages. Those who didn't want tea had juice. We played a few games as well. One game we took a purse and filled it with miscellaneous items, some typical purse items and some random things like spoons, or a shoe and whoever guessed the most items got a prize. We had all the girls take their sneakers off (before they got dressed up) and then the girls had to guess whose shoes belonged to whom. We also had the girls partner up stand side by side and we loosely tied the inner hands together so that each person only had one free arm. We gave them a box and gift wrapping supplies and they had a contest to see which pair could wrap a gift the fastest using only the free arms. The bound arms could not be used. LOTS of FUN!! My daughter wanted to play these games again at her 12th b-day party which was only a a week and a half ago. Good luck!

Beach-less Beach party Did that in March in the midwest (i.e. Hula hoop contest, limbo, jello jiggler starfish, wear bathing suits, bring towels. Don't bring sand into your home! Have a food concession stand set up w/ tickets to buy food) Spa day - (i.e. fix hair, do nails, soak feet)

Skating party (i.e. outside home - ice or roller) For the brave girls: Fear factor or survivor party - complete with scavenger hunt in neighborhood, eating a gummy worm out of the plate of whipped cream with hands tide behind back, sticking their hand in a jar of crickets to get the prize on the bottom - get them at a bait shop. They won't bite - just feel awful!

Games: Love the game "Who am I?" Each girl gets a name on their back of someone famous - we usually do "Disney characters (hard ones!) They run around and only get to ask each person three yes/no questions, then bounce to the next person.

Have fun!

We did a spa party for my daughter's 10th birthday last year. We did the party at home and it was a lot of fun. I had a few relatives come over to help out to make the most of the time allowed at the party. We had a station to do nails, hair, and mini makeup sessions. We did mini-facials at the table as a group. The girls were asked to bring their favorite robe to put on over their clothes at the party. They each received their own wash clothes and head band. Each girl received a card listing each station they could visit. Their card was stamped at each station to let them know that they had completed the station. We had punch, fresh fruit, finger sandwiches to eat and of course cake and ice cream. It was a lot of fun. You can pick up nail polish, lip gloss, etc. at local dollar stores, target, walmart, etc. for not a lot of money. This year on her 11th birthday we did a scrapbooking party. My daughter took pictures of her friends a few weeks before the party and we had them printed and ready for the party. Each girl received a 8x8 scrapbook as their take-home gift. They had lots of fun adding stickers and backgrounds to their pictures. I took a picture of the entire group at the beginning of the party and had them printed during the party so each girl could take a picture from the party home with them to add to their book. We also stamped note cards and gift tags. The girls had lots of fun.

How about going to the movies. It can be any movie theater. For my daughter's 8th birthday we had 10 of us (kids and three adults) and we went to the Hollywood Theater in Woodridge, Il (off of 75th St-in a strip mall). AT this theater you can get full meals, plus popcorn and candy. We ordered popcorn, pizza and pop. Prior to the theater everyone met at our house were we played some movie-themed games, had movie decorations and had cake and opened presents. What helped with the cost is that I had a birthday coupon for admission up to 8 free. If you go to their website you can enter your whole family's birthday information and during the month of the birthday you will receive an email with the free coupon. It's a really nice, clean theater and everyone enjoyed themselves. My husband and I have gone there by ourselves-that's when you can order an alcoholic beverage if you like. Another option is going to the zoo. My daughter's birthday is in December so we went during Holiday Magic at Brookfield Zoo. Again free passes played a major factor in the cost. However, any season at the zoo is nice. Another option is going to a Pottery store where they can paint their own mug, plate, etc. I know there is the Pottery Place in Morris, Il. But if you go online, I'm sure you could find others. Hope this helps.

I saw a really fun idea either on TV or in a magazine - flip flops. I was going to say cupcakes, but I see you already did cake decorating. Have a goodie bag for each girl with some fun in the sun stuff (maybe lip gloss, sunglasses, a squirt gun or anything) and a pair of Old Navy flip flops (or the like - just buy a bunch for extra sizes, etc. and you can take back what you don't use). Then have them decorate them with an array of items from the craft store (flowers, butterflies, ribbon, beaded strings, etc.) I thought it was such a neat idea! Good luck!

Hi S.,

My daughter was invited to a party last summer, which she said was the best time she's ever had.

The party was at the roller skating rink somewhere in North suburbs (you may easily research online). It was very inexpensive (I think something like $5 per hour per kid, plus the skates) and so easy on parents -- folks that work there did all the entertainment. There is music, there is food, you can bring a cake, they dance for a few hours, just a really good time.

If you want to kick it up a notch, you may hire a limo to take the kids there and back.

My daughter just turned 9 and we had a scrapbook party! It was great! And I got nice small scrapbooks for $3.99 for the girls (10 pages w/ covers) I was able to get paper, stickers, markers and all that at Dollar Stores and Walmart. The girls had a great time and didn't even want my help. And you should see how proud they all were of their beautiful scrap books! Like you, we've done it all (spa party, slumber party, discovery center!) Another fun idea would be a dress up tea party (buy dresses at Salvation Army for the girls and that is their party take home favor or something!) Just a thought! Good luck and have fun!

Good Luck!

If it is just for girls, there is a new children's "spa" that offers kids manicures and pedicures. I recieved a mailing from them but didn't keep it (since I have a boy!). I think it was in Oak Brook or Lombard. Sorry I don't remember more, but it looked like a fun place.

It wasn't long ago that I was in a similar circumstance. Not having much money to work with, I decided to make the party more "interactive" by having the kids make something. I kept the party to 6 friends and then the real fun began. I had boys so it seemed even tougher to come up with a good idea. Then it hit me... a pizza party! I made the dough from a pizza mix and let the boys do the rest - under my guidance - starting with greasing the pans (after washing their hands). One pizza had a face on it complete with green peppers for hair. I put them in the oven and then took them out. The boys played some video games while they were baking but kept coming in the kitchen to check on the progress. I wasn't real sure how the boys liked it as they all said they never had made pizza before. My boys helped me many times. But then, I spoke to some of the moms later and what stories they had from their sons! Good luck.

I have about 12 nieces who already have had their 10th birthday parties and I also have an 11 year old daughter myself. I think I have done every theme possible. I will mention only the ones that were big hits for the girls;
Karaoke Party
Fashion Show
American Idol
Americas next Top Model
Bowling Party
Fear Factor
Water Parks
Spa party (at your house)
Photo shoot (with many wardrobe changes)

S., most of the parties that are contests and have winners, I always make sure everyone wins a different category. If you need details about certain themes just let me know and I will be more than happy to help you out. Planning parties is my passion and I do it for fun...I think you could have lots of fun with any of these. Give your daughter different options and let her choose...make it all about her. After all..you are celebrating her day. Hope this helps!

My coworker just had an American Idol party at her home for her daughter. She bought the flashing strobe light and they all sang and danced. The mom and dad were the judges. Everyone had a great time. Hope this helps. Have a great time.

My daughters are older now, but they always loved the parties at Libby Lu. We never had one ourselves, but they went to a lot with friends. Got a makeover and danced plus got to make their own lotion. Good luck, C.

My daughter is celebrating a 10-year birthday as well! For our older daughter, we had good luck with an American Girl party... the company sells kits, which include a mini play for the guests to act out during the party. They receive their character assignment with the party invitation, so they can dress the part. We've also put together a "mystery party", with dissappearing ink, a hidden prize hunt, names spelled (and pronounced) backwards, a backwards meal (what looks like dessert is actually the meal, and then what looks like a meal is actually dessert), etc. ... it was a big hit! Good luck and have fun!

What does your daughter like? You could take everyone to a movie. Some theatres have birthday packages. You could have a tea. You could have a sleep over plain and simple with a day at the museum. Let us know how it goes.

Hi S.,

If you aren't too far from Crystal Lake, there is a pottery studio there called "Color Me Mine" that does birthday parties where the kids get to paint their own pottery. It's really fun!

Good luck planning the birthday party! :-)

When my son turned 10, we had a camping party! We went camping at a nearby county campground. All of the parents dropped them off in the evening and picked them up in the morning. We ate hot dogs, played flashlight tag in the dark, told scary stories, and slept in tents. It was a lot of fun.

My daughter turned ten in the winter so we stayed at a hotel. We crammed 5 girls in one room, ordered pizza, swam, and watched a movie. I took lots of snacks and drinks. You can either take some fruit and muffins for breakfast or choose a hotel with a free breakfast.

My last child turns 10 in May so she could choose between the camping party or the hotel party. She chose the hotel party. We are going to look for the best deals and go there. It isn't really anymore expensive than any other party if you choose carefully and look for deals. Then it's just snacks and pizza. Also, your house stays clean! The kids love it.

Hope this helps!

You could do a giant scavenger hunt and put the kids in teams. Then, everyone ends up at a specific location for the party. I actually take my 10 yr old twin nieces on scavenger hunts in stores when I have shopping to do. We create a list for all of us to find and they LOVE it (and then they don't mind the shopping as well). Good luck and have fun!

Both my girls (15 and 13) really love the roller skating parties. I have set up several at the White Pines Skating rink (skatingfun.com) The prices are reasonable and there are different packages to select from. Or they just invite a few friends and I give them all a little spending money. Then when the skating is done, they have a sleep over.
good luck.

Hello. I am a the mother of one 19 year old but also a big, girlie-girl, kid at heart :o). I understand how important these birthday issues can be. I suggest you have a Build-A-Bear Birthday. They have multiple locations throughout the city and surrounding suburbs. They offer different birthday packages to fit any budget. Plus this is something your daughter and sons can enjoy. Check them out online. Regardless of whether or not you take my advice, I hope your princess enjoys her special day!
