Hi Moms!
I am looking for suggestions for a bicycle or tricycle for my 2.5 year old boy. He is too big for the ride on toys we have and I am wondering what type of bike to buy that we can actually get some use out of. I am thinking about either.....a classic big wheel, a little bicycle with training wheels or a tricyle. I hate to spend a million $$ and I would like to get at least 2 years out of this bike. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.....

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I ended up purchasing a Radio Flyer Grow and Ride "bike" I was worried that my son would have trouble picking up the concept of pedaling....but it only took about two days and he is on the go. Now we are looking forward to a summer on the go!

We have the Radio Flyer Go N Grow and the Radio Flyer Fold 2 Go. Both are good, but the Fold 2 Go is a bit bigger and you would easily get 2 years out of it. If you decide to go with either of these models, shop the price a bit. I only paid $50 for each at Target but I see them as high as $80 on the net. You can also check www.redwagons.com --they always have good prices on Radio Flyer. Good luck :)

My vote would be to start with a big wheel type bike...my son got a batman one for his second birthday and the seat adjusts as he grows (it has three different settings) I think it was purchased at Walmart...I think you would get waaaay more than two years out of it because it is very sturdy and when I was young we had our big wheels forever...and used them long after we even learned how to ride bikes! I think a big wheel would be great for a child learning how to use pedals and then he could still use it later because it is still a bit different from a bike...have fun!

I've had daycare kids start on bikes (very small ones) by that age, or even younger. As long as the bike is small enough it's fine.

I bought bikes for my kids when they were 2 1/2 but they didn't use until they were 3 since it was late in the season. They were 10 inch wheels and they used them for 2 years. If your son is tall, you could also check out 12 inch wheels. The best thing about them was that even though the bikes were getting small as they got older, they were perfect for learning to ride without the training wheels. They could easily put their feet down and were not afraid of falling. My son learned how to ride in a week with out the trainers. This size bike usually goes for about $30. I think we bought them at Toys R Us and put them together myself.
