Looking for Area Rugs at a Reasonable Price

Hi! We have a 5 month old and hardwood floors. I wanted to get some room-sized area rugs before she starts crawling and I guess I'm experiencing sticker shock ($700 for ONE rug?!). I just want something that doesn't look too hideous, but that's not so expensive so that I won't be worried about when she inevitably spills Kool-Aid on it. Does anyone know of any good places for cheap area rugs? I'm looking for larger rugs, something like 10' x 10' and 7' x 10'. Thanks!!

What can I do next?

Hi K., try looking in Big Lots,Family Dollar or Target. I have seen some in those stores and the prices range from $29-79 dollars. I hope you can find one.

If you really just want to get area rugs, then go for it, but don't feel like you need to get them just for your daughter. I know many, many kids (my own included) who learned to scoot and crawl and walk just fine on hardwood - without any major head trauma. While it is true that the crawling may come more easily when they can get traction on a carpet, they figure it out, one way or another. And it's way easier to keep hardwood clean (either with the swiffer, or your baby's butt as he scoots across the floor.) Just my two cents . . .

$700? That's crazy - Your kid will definitely spill, vomit and pee all over a living room rug :) Despite your what-must-be-good-taste, get real and shop Kohl's ;) We actually did by one there a few years ago for less than $100, and it has held up great (and I have two young ones and a big hairy dog...) It's nothing fancy, no intricate design, but designy enough for us and thick, soft, comfortable, etc. Maybe ten years down the road you can get some serious stylish home decor going, but I agree that now is not the time. Good luck!

I got a braided wool 6 X 8 rug for my daughter's room at Tuesday Morning. It was $100. It's hit or miss, though, what rugs any one store may have...

We had luck at Furniture Outlet USA. The one we went to was in Shakopee. Good luck!

Bed bath and beyond has reasonable prices on rugs and they regulary run 20% off any one item coupons in the paper and mailings - maybe sign up at their website. The rugs don't look like pottery barn or anything but they look nice enough.

I can give you quite a few good places to go for nice and large room sized rugs costing anywhere from $250 to as low as $39.99. We did alot of homework and price camparisons before settling on what we finally did buy. You can benefit from my many trips to several stores. My recommendations are listed at the end of the post.

We did a big room sized rug run about 1 year and half ago for the same reason. As you shop, keep in mind that sometimes the cheaper rugs have a thinner pile than their high end counter-parts. That and the fact that they're not real wool or cotton is probably where the savings are coming in. Because our goal was to create a cushion for the little ones, we got around this issue by going to Menards and buying a remnant roll of carpet padding for really cheap. I think we got enough for several rooms for about $30, and cut it to size for each rug. The padding also help keep the rugs from moving around which was big for us because we have two big dogs who would kick the rugs around if they ran in the house.

Otherwise, you'll be pleasantly surprised by the decor quality of the lower priced rugs out there. You can really find nice ones for a really good price. I shampoo mine from time to time, and have had no loose threads, damage or problems. No one can tell they're not expensive. My favorites came from IKEA, but our other rugs from the other stores listed below are very nice and get the job done well too!

For really nice oriental imported or danish modern type designer styled rugs check out ($200 and lower):

IKEA
Fleet Farm
K-Mart
Target

For nice solid colors, but sculpted design or plain ($80 to $30):

Target
K-Mart
Fleet Farm
Menards
Home Depot
Lowes
(don't check the main flooring areas of the hardware stores listed, they usually hang the high end stuff in special racks in flooring. You should look for/check for boxes and displays in the aisles and off to the side..they're usually marketed/ aimed at college students or people perhaps decorating a child's room.

For heirloom quality braided rugs (The wool, oval shaped ones that look like hand crafted Amish type rugs --cost ranging from $40 to $69)

K-mart

Last but not least, I check out places like Marshalls, TJ Maxx, and Big Lots from time to time, and have noticed that sometimes they keep a supply of room sized rugs in the 50 to 60 dollar range. But it's hit or miss on designer quality. Sometimes they have really nice stuff, and others it kinda looks like weird stuff the regular stores couldn't sell, so it's there.
Hope this helps.

I got my area rugs at Menard's, and they look just as nice (if not nicer) as the ones my in-laws got at Dayton's but for a small fraction of the price!

Hi K. - We put hardwood floors in last summer and I wanted to find a large, 7'X10' size, area rug for our family room. I shopped all over but that was a hard size to find. (most are 5'X8') Both Menards and Lowes carried the larger rugs in-stock. I finally purchased one from Lowes for around $250. With three kids under age 5, it has held up well. Good luck with your search!

IKEA

I bought three rugs there for my apartment and everyone is so surprised that they came from IKEA. I've had them for 1 1/2 years and they are holding up fine.

These area rugs are amazing! They are made out of 75% recycled materials and are beautiful AND affordable to boot. I laid my entire living floor in this stuff and can't believe how beautiful it looks and feels. I understand they now sell it at Home Depot and Target. Check it out :o)

As a grandmother, nurse and prior nanny, childcare giver, these are my thoughts. First, I totally agree with the previous responder about leaving hardwood floors. It is actually a LOT healthier all the way around, and the child does learn and manage quite well. If you decide for whatever personal reasons to obtain area rugs, the two places noted not mentioned are BigLOTS and TJMaxx. I have purchased from both of themr with good results. Good luck on whatever your decision.
