Looking for "Age Appropriate" Books on Puberty for My 8 Year Old Daughter.
My daughter recently went to the doctor for a regular check up. During her exam the pediatrician noticed she is developing down below. She seemed a little concerned that it was happening at her age. She sent us for blood work and xrays of her hand to check her bone age. She was affraid she might have something called premature pubarche. Fortunately the tests all came back within normal ranges, however now my daughter seems a little apprehensive that she is "different" than other girls her age. We have a very open relationship, so I have talked with her several times about being a young woman and some of the "normal" changes that happen to all of us. She is a very smart girl who loves to read. So when I mentioned the idea of trying to find her a book about everything we have been discussing, her face lit up. She said that would be great and then we can discuss any questions she may have from the book. So I am here hoping someone may have a book that helped them or their daughter with this very sensitive issue. Again she will be 9 in July and I have always considered her a little more mature for her age so any suggestions would be soooo appreciated!!! Thank you in advance for your help!!

I am a pediatrician and a mother of a 12-year-old girl. We bought The Keeping and Care of You by American Girl. It was a life-saver. My daughter loves it. I bought it for her when she was about 9 or 10. Nothing too risque or scarry.
Hope it helps

The resource I have is Christian, if you don't mind that....any Christian bookstore probably would carry a series of books called "Here's Lily". I got mine at Young Women of Faith (google women of faith) website, and I'm sure they have other such resources. The Lily series contains pairs of books, a fiction story coupled with a nonfiction about growing up and bodily changes with workbook-style pages to fill in. My daughter and i spent many years reading these stories together....they make you laugh and cry, and are full of good values and important lessons. The one that dealt most with the bodily changes was called Lily Robbins M.D. (medical dabbler) and was accompanied by The Body Book. They are written by Nancy Rue and published by ZonderKidz. In fact if you are interested, I probably still have most of them and could send them to you! My daughter is now 15 and these books are aimed at the 8-12 age group. Let me know if you are interested!!

Look into American Girl's "The Care & Keeping of You - The Body Book for Girls". I saw it at Walgreens, it has child friendly illustrations, from hair styles, clothing, sanitary pads, etc. You can check it on-line: www.store.americangirl.com.
I thought to buy it for my daughter, but she is only 2!
I think it's a great resource for pre teens.
Good luck!

My 11yr daughter has a book called "The Care of Keeping of You." It is part of the American Girl library. The book is about $10 and I've seen it at Target and Barnes and Noble. My daughter has had it for a couple years and reads it ALL the time. This book covers everything from the care of your body to puberty and even proper eating. I love this book, its very easy to understand and makes some of the tough question easier. Good Luck!!!
