Looking for a Place to Volunteer with My Children

We are looking for some type of volunteer activity to do with our children (4, 6, 8). Does anyone know of something we can do with our kids or a website where they list various opportunities for families? We live in West St. Louis County.

What can I do next?

You may want to try Saint Louis Family Church website.
They are in West Saint Louis county too and always have some type of charity event going on...

Any nursing home or skilled nursing facility would love to have you come in and there are many to choose from in the area. There are shelters, but they may have age restrictions. There are many organizations that do things like walks. American Diabetes Assoc., Kidney Foundation, American Heart Assoc., There are org. that target kids like the Ronald McDonald Houses and many more that the names escape me at the moment. Hope this helps.

I don't know of any websites that list these opportunities. However, one idea is to call a local animal shelter and ask if they need any puppy playtime/dog walking volunteers. So many volunteer opportunities seem to be over a little one's head or "scary" - not puppies! It is an easy way to teach responsibility and promote volunteerism at a young age.

The St. Louis Food Bank always needs help. You can get a group (or join a scheduled group) to pack boxes of food to be delivered to food pantries and individuals. This is truly something EVERYONE can do, even your 4 year old. My family and I went with a group; it was so much fun, and my kids really understood the impact they were having. My kids still talk about it, and my son wanted to have his 9th birhtday party there! The kids ran around the Food Bank site finding cans of food and boxes while the grownups packed and stacked the boxes. And since hunger is getting worse as the economic crisis in the world worsens, they probably need more help than ever. Have fun!
