Looking for a New Vacuum Cleaner, Any Recommendations?
My old vacuum cleaner broke. I need a new one. I do not have pets. Any recommendations?

Hoover Windtunnel supreme. My sister got me one because I kept wearing them out with a dog and thick carpet. I love the light that is red when the carpet is still dirty and green when it's clean. It's power is so strong, it's almost self-propelling. Using it for the first times, I thought "What a liberating feeling."

I'm an odd duck who has two vacuums, a Rainbow and a Dyson. The Rainbow we've had for about 15 years. It was quite pricey, but still works fantastic. It's only draw back is that it's a complicated to pull out and use for quick clean ups. That's why we bought the Dyson. The Dyson doesn't work well, but--as good as it is--the Rainbow is even better. Seriously, the Rainbow kicks A**.
So if you want deep cleaning, I'd go with the Rainbow. If you want ease of use, go with the Dyson. The Dyson probably won't disappoint you. There are plenty of people who love theirs.

I have an Electrolux from the 1970's LOL. I paid $400 for it at the time and it is still running well, but since it is practically an antique I have been thinking of replacing it. Lately, it seems to overheat. I will probably keep it and have the engine cleaned and use it in the garage. Thanks for the information.

I have had an Oreck XL for MANY years and it still picks up like a champ (and I did have an inside Dog and Cat for a while). It is light weight, easy to clean (bag changes), and easy to handle. My only "complaint" is that you have to buy the bags from a dealer, not available at the grocery or dicount store . . . but they always have specials and such.
I have also heard good things about the Dyson, but know it is much heavier and have not personally used it.
The only thing I can tell you for sure (experience, experience, experience) . . . you get what you pay for with a vacuumn and "gimicks" don't mean a thing.

I agree with Heather. Dyson is more expensive but it is worth it. I was at a clients home and she had one with the Allergy approved collection and it was amazing, on all of the different floors, carpets, wood and Italian tile.

S., join Freecycle for your area and post an ad or look for others giving away vacuums. If you can deal with a used one, go to Goodwill or Salvation Army, etc. J.

I am partial to canister vacuums, so if you like them too I recommend the Kenmore Magic Blue from Sears. I got mine about six months ago for around $70. Portable, lightweight, sucks like the dickens on both tile and carpet. Big plus: the stick is adjustable in length - so I make it short and my KIDS like using it too!
I have 3 kids and a dog, no carpet (I used it to clean my MIL's carpet and it passed!), and for the money I think it's a great buy. If you have stairs it wouldn't be convenient to haul up & down all the time, but it would probably be lighter to haul than the large uprights previously mentioned.
