has anyone used a steam mop for there hard floors? i am trying to use less chemicals in our home, and would really like to have a steam mop, but the ones i have looked at have such a wide range of reviews. from loving them to thinking they are a complete waste of money. any good or bad reviews would be great. i am willing to spend the money to get one that is really great.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

okay, so after i got all of the great recommendations from all of you, i found out that you can not steam peal and stick linoleum floors, because it causes them to peel off of the floor. so i will be trying the microfiber mop that you use water with. it is only 15 dollars, so at least if it is a failure, it is less than the 100 or more dollar steam mops. thank you to all who took the time to reply. next time i will do my research first haha.

Nothing about a steam mop, but I too am grateful for a husband who works very hard so I can be a stay at home Mom. I'm grateful for a man who thinks mothering is the most important thing I can do.

I have borrowed my neighbor's Shark before and loved it! I used it on my hardwood as well as bathroom tiles and even the stalls. No chemicals, just steam. Also, as for brands with less chemicals, try Melalueca.com I have used all their products exclusively in my home for over 3 years and love them.

Hi S.,
Have you ever heard of the Rainbow?
I have one and it is the absolute best machine I've ever owned! It is an air purifier, aromatizer, vaporizer and it also is a vaccum! Not to mention the BEST vac I've ever owned!!!! You can use it on any surface and I also got my father one for his hardwoods!!! The best feature is that you're sucking all of dirt and dust into the water to dump down the toilet, instead of re-arranging it & wasting your time!!! Call me if you're interested and I can answer any of your questions!!!!
Sincerely,
N. S.

I just purchased the Shark at Target last week. I have only used it twice, and I do like it. It didn't seem "wet" enough to me at first, but I must say that the floors do get clean. I have 3 sons, 3 dogs, and 4 cats, so I am always looking for good cleaning tips. I recently read that the swiffer solution can be harmful, and even though my children are older, my dogs will sometimes eat foods that have been dropped on the floor. No chemicals can only be a good thing!!

I don't have a steam mop, but I do have an electric one. It's a Hoover SpinScrub. This one:
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=3926082

I love it! I put vinegar and hot water in it instead of the smelly chemical solution it came with, and my floors always get very clean. We have all hardwood and white linoleum in the kitchen, plus two large dogs, my toddler, and three kitties. The floor gets so dirty, I use the mop more than once a week. I use it all over the house, it makes the hardwood shine! If you have deep grout, it won't work well though. It has trouble on the fake grout on our linoleum. It also can't get right up against walls/cabinets, but it's not too hard to grab a cloth and wipe along the baseboards every month or so to grab what collected where it can't reach.

I have one from the SHARK company that is all in one. It has all the bells and whistles to do my sinks and showers and floors, as well as anything else you can think of. I also use the O MOP by Method. They are a really good chemical free company and have lots of products to choose from. You can find them at Target or online at www.drugstore.com
congrats on lessening the chemicals at home!!

my mom used to have a steam mop and loved it. she has all ceramic flooring in her house. she just filled it up, pushed it around and viola the floors were clean, shiney and sanitized. and once she was done she just tossed the pad in the washer witha little bleach and it was good as new for the next time. she had it for several years and it finally kicked the bucket, but she really liked it. it was yellow and gray...might have been either a hoover or bissell, i'm not sure.

Good morning S., here's a link for what I've found to be WONDERFUL and a real back saver ( I suffer from back problems) We lived in a 4,000 sq foot home and the main floor was all hardwood and tile and this was a dream come true http://www.target.com/Hoover-FloorMate-Widepath-Wet-Vacuu...
This is the new model, mine is now 5 years old and never had a problem. Hoover suggests a lysol product for the tile and I will not allow a lysol product in our home so I called them up directly and they were able to give me alternative products suitable for use in the machine.
Clean up is a breeze too ( you have to wash out the brushes etc)
Good luck T.`

Don't know about steam mops, however we recently had our hardwood floors redone and we're told by the hardwood installers that you should NEVER use vinegar on hardwood. Over time it will dull the polyurethane layer. Just thought I would share that. We have hardwood through most of our house and we use the swiffer vacuum first and then put a damp cloth on a regular swiffer head to clean the floors. It does a good job. We don't have pets but we do have busy children. Good luck with all the advice. K.

I have the Shark Steam Mop and I do like it because it dries fast and sanatizes. The only problem I have with it is we have tile in our kitchen that is not smooth. I think who ever picked it out put outside tile inside the house by accident. The pad gets "caught up" on the edges of the tile and comes off a little. It does not do this on my flat tile in the bathrooms or on my hardwood floors.

Save your money! I bought the Hoover Spin Mop when it first came out 6 years ago. I begged my husband to buy it for me and told him it would make my life so much easier. He ended up buying it $199.00 and it was worthless. It took forever just to do a small area because you have to go over it several times just to see a difference. It is so bulky and can't reach corners or fit under cabinets in the kitchen and bathrooms. I ended up selling mine for $10 at community garage sale. I'm not sure it is even worth that. I hate mopping but I find the old fashioned way is best. Good luck!

A little about me. I am a Christian, stay at home mom for 12 years with 4 beautiful daughters and married to the love of my life.

Hi S.
If we're talking about the same product, I bought one that I saw on an infomercial. If I remember correctly, it costed near $80.00-$100.00. It looked great....it seemed like a great idea, but when I used it, I realized that it is really just a glorified wet swiffer. It comes with two pads that velcro on, and I like that part because the pads are nice and thick, but really the only difference between this and a swiffer is that it does have cloth pads and it uses steam. Steam really doesn't seem to clean any better than hot water on a regular hard floor. Also, without any suction, the pads just gets dirty and more dirty and you can't rinse it like a regular sponge mop. This might be good for hard wood floors, since it doesn't leave alot of moisture behind, or dries quickly, but other than that it doesn't seem to be worth the price I paid. Hope this helps. S.

I don't have experience with steam mops, but I have discovered that my deep-steam carpet shampooer works GREAT for doing my hard kitchen floor! One tool for both jobs. And it doesn't make my fibromyalgia flare up nearly as much.

That aside, check out Consumer Reports. They are wonderful for independent test results.

Blessings,

Hey S., my name is M., I have a 3 year old son. I read your question, and just thought I would respond. I had a Bissel steam mop, that I purchased when my son was born. We had wood floors, and a bassset hound so I thought It would be a good idea. I have to tell you I hated it, and have since sold it at a garage sale. Although you take off the mop head and wash it, you are just pushing the dirt from room to room. As far as safer cleaning products for your home, I have taken all the chemicals out of mine, and would love the opportunity to share with you how I did it. If you are interested keep in touch. If not good luck with your search. Thanks, M.

Hi~
I read your responses and assume you'll probably be getting a Shark steam cleaner! LOL I've never used one, but if you have any carpet, I would recommend getting a 'water' vacuum as NO vacuum with any dry filter will clean like one with a water filter. I've sold Rainbow vacuums for 8 years and hear that OceanBlue, Hyla, and Thermax are also efficient. (I have several used Rainbows and LOTS of information about them in case you're interested further!)

Have a happy household!

I have one of the steam mops that you see on TV. I love it! I hate using chemicals in my home and this mop really does an incredible job. I still have to wipe in corners, but that is not a big deal. For other safe products to clean with, I also use Shaklee products. Great for cleaning! R. M

I recently purchased a steam fast steam mop on walmart.com. I absolutely LOVE it! If you go to their website you can view and compare all the brands they sell. It was only $40! I had to have mine shipped to the store (could've sent it to my house by why pay more) They dont sell them in every store. I would highly recommend getting one. However, I would stay away from the infomerical ones. Specifically the H2O. I've heard horrible things about that! You can also check out www.infomercialratings.com to read up on infomercial mops. I have 2 boys 1 and 3, two large dogs, and I run a daycare from my home. My floors see alot of wear. The steam mop was the best purchase I've made in awhile. Hope you enjoy yours if you decide to get one!
