Looking for a Good OB on IHC Healthcare Insurance

Hi Ladies,

I'm about 20 weeks pregnant and unhappy with the OB I have been seeing. I have Select Health Insurance (not my fav.) which will allow me to see people within the IHC network. Can any of you recommend a good OB? I hate just picking someone out of a referral guide.

Thanks in Advance!
J.

What can I do next?

Hi J.,
If you dont mind driving out to ogden to McKay Dee I had Dr. Marriot deliver my last baby. He wasnt my doc the whole time but was so amazing I decided that we would see him again if I had another. (The doc that delivered my first two retired) Anyway I have really hard pregnancies and had the worst birth with to many complications but he was very informative and so good at what he does. My husband was so impressed. I believe his offices are in the womens clinic there at mc Kay. Hope this helps

Check out The Avenues Midwifery I had both of my kids with Nancy Mooy she is a nurse midwife and it was the best experience ever! I did have an epidural they do not push you to go naturally it is up to you. They are amazing ###-###-####.

I don't know what area you live in, but in salt lake there is the avenue women's center. I went there for my last pregnancy (my daughter is 6 months) and saw Jeanine Gemmell. She was great. I have had 3 OBs and she was my favorite. FYI: for your first visit they make you seen a nurse practitioner and for some reason that area of the office is not the greatest and I wasn't impressed. For your second and all other subsequent visits you see dr. gemmell and it's much nicer. If you're further south I once went to Dr. Natalie Lowen and really liked her too--very happy lady. I would've stayed with her, but her office moved down by the new murray hospital and that was too far for me.

I'm sorry to hear you are unhappy with your OB. I think pregnancy is such a special time and moms should not waste any energy putting up with disappointing care. Good for you for looking into other options.
I'm not sure what you'd prefer in your provider, but I know a couple moms who speak highly of Stacey Carter, a certified nurse-midwife who practices at Antelope Women's Care in Layton. I have heard she is very sensitive and flexible about various birthing styles and will support you in having a doula at your birth to keep you comfortable. She attends hopital births at Davis Hospital, I believe.
Stacey practices with Dr. Craig Hurst, the OB whom my own midwife, Chris Miller (who is wonderful--also highly recommended!), recommends for high-risk clients. I have heard he is an excellent surgeon but more natural childbirth-oriented than most OB's. Personally, if you are not high-risk, I would recommend seeing a midwife over an OB, especially with the cesarean rate so high in Utah. Check out the International Cesarean Awareness Network's Web site for more info about preventing an unnecessary cesarean birth or preparing for a VBAC. I think it's www.ican-online.org.
If you are willing to drive, consider using Becky McInnis, the CNM who practices at the Birth and Family Place in Holladay. The birth center is a terrific place. Becky is vastly experienced and gave my family a beautiful, wonderful birth. I know she takes payment plans and her fees are reasonable, but I am not sure if insurance covers her care--my insurance covered a lot of it, but that was three years ago.
I hope this helps. Congrats on your growing family!

I have heard good things about Steven Johnson at Davis, but I don't know what insurance he takes.
