Looking for a Good Camping Location in SoCal

My husband recently returned home from a deployment and he is planning a weekend camping trip with our kids. We have 2 boys, ages 4 and 3, this will be their first camping trip and they are very excited! He wants to go somewhere that is not too far (and not too close) - no more than a couple hours' drive from northern San Diego County. He doesn't think he wants to camp at the beach and we also want to avoid any locations that may be susceptible to wildfires (as we are heading into "fire season"). Any of you know of any good camping locations in this area? Thank you!

What can I do next?

there are a number of options.
1. Palomar Mountain - super close and very high up and you have the observatory as an activity/education
2. Vail Lake - right outside of temecula. check it out online
3. Idlywild - very close and super cute town

San Onofre is a fun camp place which is 3.5 miles west of San Mateo. The beach is nearby but you don't camp on the beach: http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=647

Or San Elijo, again near the beach but not on it: http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=662

Figured I'd just throw those out there even though they are near the beach, just to give your husband options.

Not exactly sure if this is what he's looking for but there is a cool campsite right here near my house. We live in base housing for Camp Pen but we are actually off the base - in San Clemente off the Christianitos freeway exit. It is the very North end of the base. Anyway, the campsite is called San Mateo campsite. It's not on the beach but it's only about a mile from the water. You just make a right off the freeway and the campsite is up about a mile on the right hand side.
