Looking for a Dresser for My Son's Room

We are decorating a new room for our 3 year old son and I need to get some furniture for it, probably just a dresser and a bookshelf. The biggest issue is that I want them to be solid wood, not the particle board stuff at Target and Walmart. I live on the bradenton/sarasota border, what stores are good for this stuff? I was wondering about ordering online, but am nervous about not being able to see the product first. However, if you have had a good online experience, let me know and I will go for it! I'm just looking for simple here, nothing fancy. I just want it to be solid wood because of the chemicals used in particle board. Thanks for your help as always!

thank you so much! we ended up ordering a dresser just this weekend from JC penny for their president's day sale! Free shipping, so it worked out great. I think I will get his bookself from one of the unfinished places. Thanks again!

I just bought my son whom just turned 4 a big boy bed, dreeser and book shelf. I got his from Broyhill in Sarasota which is on the right past the Sarasota square mall and Linens and Things. Also another good place to look that had kids furniture on display is Havertys in Sarasota, which is located in the Target plaza off of 41. You can also look at Kids Quarters furniture in Brandon, www.KidsQuartersOnline.com. It also took me awhile to find places that actually had children's bedroom sets on display, so I'm more than happy to help. Hope this helps you in your search.

Hi M.:
Congrats on the upcoming birth of your #2 in August! What an exciting time for you, your hubby & your son!

I live in the Parrish area and when I first moved down here from MD we went window shopping and scouting the area to see what was around. We found a furniture store that sold solid wood furniture. It is called Wood You Furniture, located at 4744 Cortez Road W in Bradenton. There is also an Amish restaurant on 14th Street in Bradenton called Millers Dutch Restaurant that has a gift show that also sells wood furniture. I noticed in our local phone book there is also one on 7288 South Tamiami Trail in Sarasota called Unfinished Furniture that says they specialize in solid wood furniture.

I understand your want for solid wood. Particle board can easily break under the activities of an active 3 year old! I have 2 sons of my own, now in college, who were pretty h*** o* furniture, cause they liked to climb, and I purchased solid wood furniture for them when they were young for the solidity and strength of it.

Hope these options give you some places to visit and check out. Wishing you much success! :)

Try the Women's Exchange, Goodwill, other thrift stores as well as ads in the local paper. You'll find exactly what you need!

Hi M.,
I have Pali Furniture in my sons room and Love it! They have all different styles but it is good quality furniture. I got it in Brandon at Petite Elite Baby (right near Babies R Us) Bennets in Sarasota used to carry Pali but I am not sure if they still do or not....
You can also look Pali up on line.

Good Luck!

I,too, live in Sarasota. I favor solid wood furniture as well. Unfinished furniture stores carry solid wood furniture. Choices of species are usually pine or oak. Used or antique stores also have some old treasures. Some refinishing is usually in order. My sister who lived up north favored IKEA. Look on the internet for retail store locations. You can also order through catalogues or online. Most of the furniture is simple in design, and sturdy. My sister's experience with IKEA has been nothing but positive.
