Looking for a Doctor... - Washington,DC

I am looking for a Doctor in the alexandria area. We have just moved here from Idaho two weeks ago and I am 5 months pregnant. I have been told that Inova is the only hospital around that delivers babys. I have brought my medical records with me and am not high risk.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

We are going to deliver in Alexandria Inova Hospital-Seminary. It is closest and since my husband will be in school and it will be a stressful month with finals coming up, the closer to home for me the better... We have limited choices with doctors with our insurance but have found one and I am hoping that we will be happy with him. We meet him on Friday for our first appointment.

thank you for all you help and support... Also thank you for the websites that gave me some great information.

Hi there - I moved to Alexadria last year when I was about 2 months prego. I started out at Physicians and Midwives, but I had a bad experience (with just one of the doctors). However, I ended up at Physicians for Women. They were great - I saw every doctor in the practice more than once and the one I wanted to bring my baby into the world (Dr. Salgado) was there on delivery day. I don't know if you are used to the solo practice or the group practice, but if you want a group - I highly recommend Physicians for Women. I'm now about 30-40 minutes away in Maryland and will be traveling back there for all my annuals....or until I find a better gyn.

There are a few hospitals in your area. It depends on what kind of birth you want. I'm a doula and teach natural childbirth classes. So, I'm putting out all options for you, since you are not high risk. The best birthing center in your area is Birth Care. They offer births at the birth center as well as attending home births. If you have your heart set on a hospital birth, and are open to having a midwife, which will lower your risk of having a C-secction, give you the ability to be more involoved in your birth choices, allow you to walk around and eat and drink in labor and not be tied to a monitor, you can look into a birth at Washington Hospital Center in DC. It's not that far a drive from you. there are 2 midwife practices that attend births there. The midwives from the DC Developing families center, and the midwives at the clinic at the hospital. If you prefer a doctor, I'd suggest Dr. Tschabo- he's in the Inova hospital in Arlington.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions etc.

Welcome to the area! I live in Arlington, right on the border with Alexandria. We just had our first child on May 19th and I was very happy with my OB/GYN and the hospital. My Dr was Dr. Carrie Lawson who has an office out a bit in Mclean but I was very happy with my treatment from her and the other Drs in the practice. The office address is: 6845 Elm St, Suite 600, McLean, VA and the number is ###-###-####. I delivered at Virginia Hospital Center and was very pleased with my care. The nurses were wonderful - very responsive to all my first time mom questions and very caring. You can visit the hospital website at www.virginiahospitalcenter.com. Hope this helps!
Oh - and if you are looking for a ped. - we go to Northern VA Pediatrics and are happy with most of the Drs in the practice. They practice was recommended to us by all our friends in the area (some of whom are Drs themselves) as well as the OB/GYN and the Hospital.

the other response seemes good. One of the areas better hospitals for delivering babies is Inova Fairfax or Fair Oaks Hospitals. The patient care is better than at Alexandria hospital(insider info and from experience, my mother in law works at Inova Fairfax). Also to meet other moms, there is a great moms group called MOPS, www.MOPS.org and also the site www.meetup.com for local playgroups etc. I go to a playgroup at church www.bccva.org but Burke may be a far drive depending where you live in Alexandria. Oh here's another great sit www.our-kids.com, it lists all the fairfax county recreational parks and things like day trips and consignment sales etc. Good Luck with finding a doctor!

You should take a look at the site http://JustSettling.com. Their section "Medical Matters" talks about finding doctors (OBGYN's, pediatricians, hospitals, pregnancy, etc). I hope it helps and good luck!

I second Dr. Barry Rothman of Physicians for Women in the Seminary Buildings in Alexandria, as well as Dr. Siegel who delivered my son at Alexandria Inova Hospital 2 years ago. They are a wonderful group of doctors who are very personal and helpful in giving advice from birth control and family planning and so on.

I had a baby five months ago and I love my doctors, they were excellent. The practice is called Physicans for Women and they deliver at Inova Alexandria and Inova Fairfax. I had an emergency C-section and they took excellent care of me and my baby. I delivered at Inova Alexandria and the nurses were wonderful! My doctor's name is Dr. Barry Rothman. Good luck.

Inova is a hospital system. There are several INOVA hospitals, one of which is Inova Alexandria and there is Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington (formerly Arlington Hospital).

What are you looking for in an OB? Lots of people seem to be happy with Physicians and Midwives. They have several locations. http://www.physiciansandmidwives.com/. They seem to take most insurance plans.
