Looking for a Better Diaper Pail
Hello,
I have used a Diaper Genie for the past two years and I have never really liked it. I would like to find a diaper pail that is easy to use and that doesn't stink. I will sacrifce ease in use for non-stinky. Maybe mine is gross because I have been putting poopy diapers in it for two years, but I do wipe it out and sanitize weekly but nothing can get rid of the disgusting stench when I put a diaper in and twist. Should I just replace it with a new Genie or try a new product? Any suggestions are welcome!
Thanks...R.

I gave up on diaper pails and just put Walmart bags in a holder next to my garage door. I would hang a bag on the door handle and then put the diapers into it until I got a poopy one and then I would put that one in and tie it up and throw it out in the garage. When my husband got home he would grab them up and throw them away.
Last month I switched to cloth diapers so now I don't have to do any of that and I love it.

I got a Diaper Genie when I was pregnant with my first son. By the time my second son came around I was so sick of it. We got a Diaper Champ which I like so much better. For one you don't have to buy refills for it. It just takes regular trash bags. It's not completely odor free, though. But you don't smell it every time you put a diaper in it. The only time you smell anything is when you open it to change the bag.

We also had the old diaper Genie and I hated having the two handed twisting and the smell. We tried a Neat and liked it but a piece broke on it and I had a hard time finding a new one. My favorite diaper pail so far is the Diaper Genie II. It's really easy to use no twisting and no smell! You just push the diaper in and it 'clamps' shut in two places keeping the smell out even when you open it and push the diaper in. My son is a toddler so his diapers are pretty smelly and his room doesn't smell like there is a diaper pail in it. Plus the Diaper Genie II is designed to look a lot nicer than the original. It does use special bags - but they last a while and are easy to change.

LOL! I have a diaper genie as well and I hate it, while its great because it does mask the order (until you open it) unlike a regular garbage can...we live in a split entry house so its not so convenient to bring the poopy diaps down to the garbage can everytime...on the otherhand, you are right, everytime I open that stupid thing it wreaks! Its so gross and I wash mine out with hot soapy water at least once a month...and disinfect it EVERY day. I havent heard any reviews abouth other pails but I too want to purchase a new one...I can't help on advice for a new but Iwill be watching this post to hear about others.

Hi-
I know you have probably thought of this, but make sure you are using the Stage 2 genie refills. They may even have Stage 3, but I've never used them. After the kids are done breastfeeding and have started solid foods, the Stage 1 refills are useless. Also, make sure you are twisting completely after the diapers. My husband is infamous for not twisting and so we have like 2-3 stinky diapers in the same section...that's when our genie gets stinky! Again, I'm sure none of this is new info, but its there anyway.
Good luck with the Bar exam next week. I know you'll be relieved after it's over so you can focus on your pregnancy! My husband took the Bar when our first baby was about 2 weeks old...imagine studying and getting enough sleep with a newborn in the house!!! (he passed with flying colors!)

I have a diaper genie 2, and I really like it. It really contains the odors, and the diaper never comes into contact with the plastic - only the sack it drops down into. The diaper genie 2 is much different than the first one. It is very easy to use, and I have no problems with the smell.

The Diaper Champ has been great for us. No need to purchase extra bags...garbage bags will do (or even old plastic grocery/target bags if you are in a $ pinch and diligent with replacing them a bit more often...) The only odor issue is when you change the bag itself.
