Looking 4 Great Restaurant for 10 Yr. Wedding Anniversary? Romantic & Relaxing?

My husband & I are celebrating our 10 yr. wedding anniversary this coming Friday night, Mar. 7th (also my b-day is this Wed. too - the 5th). Yay!! For this joyous occasion - we're getting a babysitter & we are planning for a memorable romantic dinner for 2. But we have no idea where to go!!

Do any of you have suggestions for a nice, relaxing, romantic atmosphere with delicious food & a smoke-free environment would be a great plus but not a must - ???

We're on a budget but we're going to splurge for some "us" time which doesn't happen often. We're looking to spend around or under $50 for a nice meal - some friends gave us $ for our anniversary gift so we'd like to make the best of it, ya know? :)

We thought about going to LIDIA'S ITALY (where some friends treated us once before & we really enjoyed the food - I especially loved the Zuppa di Funghi "antipasti" but they don't serve it all the time) BUT we've also been wanting to go to THE CHEESECAKE FACTORY but I've heard it's a crowded noisy place that's not that great for a special occasion - what do you guys think? We also thought about getting the main course at one restaurant then going somewhere else for dessert - but may be easier & cheaper just to get it all at one place.

We haven't lived here long & aren't sure of the nice places to go. We like to eat just about anything (steaks, chinese, italian, I like seafood but hubby isn't a big fan, etc.) And we wanted something different that just the usual restaurants - Cracker Barrell, Applebee's, Smokehouse BBQ, etc. - know what I mean? :)

Thanks in advance for your help. - M. :)

P.S. - We live in North Kansas City, MO close to N. Oak/Vivion intersection - near Gladstone area - and are looking at restaurants within about a 15-20 min. driving distance -- as we want time to eat & relax before coming back home to relieve our sitter. :)

So What Happened?

Well, first of all I just want to say THANKS SO MUCH for all the wonderful responses and suggestions on restaurants, in and out of this area. Thanks for the congratulations too! We had a wonderful anniversary! It was a much needed "date night" for us.

We ended up going to BRIO TUSCAN GRILLE at the Country Club Plaza. (http://www.brioitalian.com/) It was wonderful!! We had 2 appetizers: the black bean soup & the lobster bisque. It was so cold outside so we needed something to warm us up. :) Then my hubby ordered the steak & it came with grilled asparagus & mashed potatoes. (it was so velvety in texture, delicious) I ordered the Mushroom Raviola al Forna (huge serving) w/ a side of vegetables (baby zuccini, carrots, red bell pepper, butternut squash, and onions). They also had delicious flaxseed crackers that were served before your meal. :)

We were oooing and ahhing over the food all night. They had wonderful flaxseed crackers to eat with your meal too. Because we were celebrating, they brought us their celebration dessert: a scoop of vanilla bean gelato & mocha crunch gelato, topped with a wafer and strawberry - and a lit candle to top it all off. (I've always wanted to try the tiramasu - a tasting was only $1.25 but it came in an espresso cup, which was enough for me).

Everything was delicious and with TAX and TIP this wonderful meal for 2 only cost about $71 ... but this was well worth it -- and for 10 yrs. of marriage this splurge was well deserved :) Oh, and we brought home left overs and warmed them up in the oven for lunch today. Still yummy!!! Thanks again everyone for your suggestions ... we want to try out some of these other restaurants too! :) Just so many choices!

P.S. - We were too full for The Cheesecake Factory after all that so we decided to warm up with some Starbucks coffee at Barnes and Noble. And we did get to eat some cheesecake afterall b/c they had Cheesecake Factory cheesecake there :) Yay!

We like to go to Cascone's (on Oak trafficway-southern end of N. Oak) for a splurge. It has a fun, intimate atmosphere and has live music on Saturdays alot of the times. It is just cozy! We had a cheaper bottle of wine, 1 appetizer, and 2 entrees for about $70, so you could definitely make it cheaper without the wine!

Hi, M.!

Happy Birthday/Anniversary! My husband and I just celebrated our 10-year anniversary in December.

Our very favorite restaurant in KC is Garozzo's (Italian food). You can check it out at www.garozzos.com. We prefer the original location, 526 Harrison, for its great ambiance. Provided you skip the wine, you should be able to keep it to $50-ish.

Enjoy!

There is a great Italian restaurant on 40 Highway in Independence. It's called Salvatore's and it is small and quaint with candles and Frank Sinatra playing all the time. They have wonderful food and it's a smoke free environment. They will probably give you a free dessert if you tell them it's your anniversary. There is another branch in Lee's Summit called Garozzo's and they are owned by the same family but I prefer Salvatore's. Congrats on your anniversary and Happy Birthday!!! Enjoy!

My husband & I just went to Justus Drugstore-A Restaurant in Smithville. Awesome!! A bit pricey but you could keep the cost down. Reservations for a Friday would probably be required but ours was at 5:30 & we left at 8:00 on a Wednesday. It's smoke free, small, has some history (check their website) and you feel very pampered. They offer a limited menu but the chef/owner has worked in France among other places on the globe. They really know what they are doing here. You are able to see the kitchen prep chefs. The presentation of each dish is excellent. It's brand new, classy and well worth whatever you spend. You won't even feel like you are in the tiny town of Smithville, which is only about a 15 min. drive up Hwy. 169 from NKC. I'd love to hear back from you if this becomes your choice. Congratulations!!

My husband and I really like Saleem's. It's on Delmar, in the loop. It's small, usually not too crowded, and decorated nicely, lots of tables for two. They serve Lebanese food (middle-eastern) which is delicious. They make some really good garlic mashed potatoes. Everything I've had there has been really good. Service is always very pleasant, and the food comes out pretty fast, inexpensive too. Then there's lots of places nearby where you could get dessert, including Ben and Jerry's across the street!

I am not from Kansas City, but we spent a wonderful couple days at the Great Wolf Lodge by Cabela's. I would HIGHLY recommend your checking out:
http://www.tedsmontanagrill.com/menu.html

Ted's is in The Legends shopping center, although it is kid friendly at 2pm for a late lunch we felt our very well behaved children were still very out of place.

However, the food is GREAT! Fresh FRESH food. Everything that was brought to the table for 4 adults and 2 children was shared with all and ALL of it was really very good.

There is a lot about this location on the site I sent you, however I sent you the link to MENU... cause we know that is important!

Also, wanted to let you know, we were there for lunch but we really ordered dinners. Steaks, seafood and some chicken.

Happy 10TH!

check out Resaurant.com, you can get fairly cheap gift certificates to area restaurants, so you can go to a nicer place with the same amount of money

Once you start buying certificates or sign up for their emails, they will start sending you 50% of the already cheap prices, so you can get a $50 certificate for like $7.50!

Maybe sign up and then wait for a discount email, I just looked and I don't have any right now.

Good luck and happy anniversary!

You like italian food, so why not try Carrabbas? Check online to see if their prices fit your budget. It's always crowded because the food is good, so it's not quaint and private. If your budget can handle a bit more, there is Brio's on the Plaza. It's a bit more upscale and might give you more of a feeling of something special. And the food and service is fantastic!

Congrats on this milestone!

The cheesecake factory would be to loud and crowded. Everytime I have been there is a long wait. I would suggest the Melting Pot. I am not sure if there is one in your area, but you could check. It can be pricey around $70-80. The meal can take up to 2 hours since you are cooking your meal at the table in a fondue pot. Some of the tables are tucked away so you have the feeling you are alone. Lots of fun.

Hey M., I live in South OP, so we don't travel too far for dinner. I like Bravos up at Zona Rosa, we have one out here but it's way to bright and loud, anyway, the lighting is nice and if you request a table off to the side, it always helps when it's crowded with noise. Then, out in OP. there's one of my all time favorites, J Gilberts wood Fired steaks, it was to rank up there with one of the best for atmosphere. Low lights, cozy booths, stone fireplace and great food. It's at 91st and Metcalf. Then up at 119th and Metcalf it J. Alexanders, again, great lighting and nice booths. And I love the food there too. There's always places on the plaza, like McCormick and Scmicks, but the cost is just too much compared to the others I suggested, but the plaza itself is great for romance because you can always find one of those cuozy places after dinner for a coffee or after dinner drink. Anyway, Happy Anniversary! L.

Keep in mind that some of these places aren't in KC...like that Paul Minneo's or whatever it's called. It's in St. Louis.

Melting Pot is great but it can be very, very expensive. If you'd like to try there, I have a 10% off (up to a $25 value) coupon that I could mail to you but it can only be used Sunday thru Thursday. But, just reading your thing I see you're going out on Friday so that might not work.

For a great meal out, I always love Hereford House, Jack Stack, PF Chang's (although you should make reservations for this place), Houston's, Jun's (sushi), Hibachi, etc. etc.

Good luck! Congrats!

My husband and I are big fans of Bucca Di Beppo (http://www.bucadibeppo.com/) for dinner, then Cheese Cake Factory for dessert. Both are on the plaza, within walking distance of each other.
Also, Figlios on the plaza, followed by a movie in the VIP room at cinemark. It runs about $20 for two tickets, but thats reasonable if you consider two tix at amc on a sat night are$18... And in the VIP room, you have to be over 21, so no obnoxious 14 year olds talking during the movie..

Happy 10th anniversary!! I see that you mentioned chinese food...have you ever tried thai? My husband and I really like going to the Thai Place (lots of locations like downtown, Westport, OP, northland - the website is www.kcthaiplace.com). All of the locations we have been to have a wonderful atmosphere, beautiful decor, and are very romantic (candles and flowers on the table, etc.). You can both definitely eat there for under $50...usually we get an appetizer and 2 entrees and pay about $40 or so. I don't think we've ever had to wait for a table, either, even on a weekend night, and the service is always excellent. They have a huge variety of dishes (different types of fried rice, noodle dishes, soups, curries, stir fry, with all kinds of meat or veggies). If you don't like your food really spicy you can request it mild, and the flavors are out of this world! It's definitely a sensual dining experience. Anyway, if you are looking for something different that might fit the bill! Hope that helps! Enjoy your night out! :o)

It is in Independence...and you would not realize how nice it is from looking at the outside. It does however get crowded there....but it has the white table cloths, wonderful wait staff etc.
I'm trying to remember what was north...used to live in NKC - but am drawing a blank right now.
There are also some great places on the Plaza. Downtown KC, there is KC Masterpiece - great steaks. A newer Italian place opened downtown...it is by one of the downtown theatres. We ate there the first week they opened and it was great. Here is a link to restuarants in the area....and it even mentioned which are smoke free:

***If you can get to The Melting Pot between 4:00 and 6:00, they have happy hour! You need to eat in the bar, but you can get their cheese fondu for $3.50/ person and the same for their chocolate fondue. The bar area does have tables too, although I think it's first come, first served. (You might want to call and check on that.)
Just the cheese and chocolate courses are plenty for dinner, and then you could use the rest of your money to buy something fun you find out on the plaza! (Also, you'd have plenty for a coffee later in the evening!)

I don't have a great recommendation, but I will tell you from experience that the Cheesecake Factory is a NIGHTMARE on Friday nights! We tried to go for my b-day for three years, and always ended up going somewhere else, because we didn't want to wait for 2 1/2 hours (and,of course, they don't take reservations). We did get to go this year on my b-day because we went on a Tuesday night and they seated us immediately! So, if you want to go there, go another night of the week and pick another special place, that takes reservations, for your big night out.

Have fun and congrats on 10 years of marriage! Wishing you many more!!

My fav, especially for italian is Brio on Lindbergh and Clayton near Plaza Frontenac. It is a tuscan grill. You could do entrees for around 15$ each, which isn't any more expensive than Olive Garden, and it's waaaay better. 'Course steak would be more, but steak is expensive anywhere!

Paul Mineo's Trattoria at West Port. It is an AMAZING Italian Restaraunt. The owners are Fantastic and accomindate your every need. You will never have a better meal!!!!!! Most Friday or Saturday nights they have a guy that sings Frank Sinatra. (I would call to confirm nights for entertainment.) I would also recommend calling for reservations and let them know you are celebrating your anniversity. We have been there 4 times since they opened in November and just love it!!! The Food, Atmosphere & people are all top quality. We don't get to go out for dinner as often as we like because once you have kids time is so limited but when we have a chance to get out of the house we always pick this place! Happy anniversary! If your husband is a MEAT man you can try Houston's http://www.hillstone.com on the Plaza, the lighting is always nice and there are booths so you're not in a large room with peole everywhere. If you like soul food try Peachtree Restaurant http://www.peachtreerestaurant.com on 18th and Vine in the jazz district (or they may have already moved to the power & light district near the Sprint Center) right next door is the Blue Room always a great place if you care for live jazz music. Also you could try Piropos in Briarcliff Village off 169 North highway in Riverside, MO. It's up on a hill so there is a breathtaking view of downtown Kansas City. It is a bit pricey but when my husband and I really want to splurge we go there. It is really romantic. Here's the website, there is a menu with prices. http://www.piroposkc.com/

Trezo Mare in the new Briarcliff Village is nice as well ( it's off of 169 Hwy & Briarcliff Parkway exit). M. you owe it to yourself & your husband to splurge & live a little. My husband is a pastor in the CME & he was moved to Chicago & I'm still here in the Northland because I've got several years before I leave my job & within that time frame our last child will graduate high school. I'de love to get with you & give you a pamperimg session on me! I do Mart Kay & SAHM's really need an outlet sometimes, I can come to you or you can come to me or we can meet...which ever one makes you feel most comfortable. I don't know if your interested in a part-time job you can have that you can do around your children, husband & marriage but it's a grrrrreat way to earn extra money while your at home....we have many women that are SAHM's & love the idea that they can work their entire day around their families. The earnings are grrrrreat too, in an hour or two you could earn $200.-400.00 depending on the people & the what they spend. You choose your own hours & days. I love it because I look at it as having a party with my girlfriends & have met some wonderful women in ALL walks of life. I love doing this even after a ten hour work day because this is something that I can see myself doing after I leave my current job in seven years & I won't have to work soooo hard anymore. First thing's first....IF you want a FREE facial & a dash out the door look, let me know & we can get together soon. I wish you luck & be BLESSED!
