I have a 9 yr old daughter that is currently in private school. Her current school only goes to 4th grade. I am looking for a good private school in Lancaster, DeSoto, Red Oak area. I am also willing to try home school program if you know someone who home schools.

What can I do next?

If you would possibly relocate - one of the best schools is in Irving (Las Colinas area). It is called North Hills School (Charter) it is Nationally Ranked and is more like a college preparatory school going from young ages through high school. It is very ethnically diverse with lots of activities. I have a niece who goes there and if my children were school age that is where I would send them. There is a waiting list so don't delay if you are interested. Because it is Charter school the expenses are not like a private school.

Hi T.,

Have you looked into Life School? There is one in Lancaster (goes to 5th grade currently) and one in Red Oak(goes to 9th or 10th). They are both great and they are FREE!! My daughter attends Life School Lancaster and I have several friends whose kids attend Life School Red Oak. You can tour the Red Oak location if you would like to as well. Call ###-###-#### for more information. Registration is approaching. FYI...we slept outside overnight to enroll last year and we were 100th in the line.

Good Luck,

F. F

I have a son in the 2nd grade at Canterbury Episcopal in DeSoto. This is our first year there and I have been very pleased. The school is college prep K-12. I had heard good things before going there and know that students perform well in national tests. 100% of their graduates attend college, most at highly regarded schools. Based on my experience in the area, Canterbury is the best around.

I have a 11 yr old son currently in public school. We've been looking for a private school as well. There are a few in the areas you are looking. Ture, Canterbury is one, but the cost is extremely expensive. In DeSoto, there is DeSoto Private on Beltline Rd. The school goes to grade 6th. Also, The school we are looking at is Trinity Christian School. It goes through 12th grade. It is half the cost of Canterbury. Good luck.

Have you thought about Ovilla Christian on Ovilla Rd between Red Oak and Ovilla. There are also several Life Schools in the area - one in Lancaster on the access road between Parkerville and Pleasant Run and the other on the access road near Red Oak off I35.These two schools are charter school and several of the people from my church have their kids there.
Also there is a homeschool coalition in the Duncanville, DeSoto, Lancaster, Cedar Hill area. You can get more information from the Home Educators Resource store in Duncanville on Cedar Ridge Road.

Hello!

I have a nine year old who is homeschooled. We just started with the txva.org program. It is a state funded charter program. There are LOTS of great home curriculums if you choose to go that route!

Someone just recently posted a homeschool post and it recieved over 180+ responses, there are tons of good websites and advise there.

Of course, you don't need a formal program to home school, but if you'd like one Texas Tech has a K-12 program that uses the same curriculum that is used in the Texas public schools.

Canterbury is a private school in DeSoto that goes through the 12th grade. It is the only private school that I know of in DeSoto that is, I think, accredited. That is important. I homeschool my daughter. It sounds like you have your plate full already and are looking for someone else to do it. I am not sure of that. You might try googling homeschool Dallas or Ellis County and it will give you a list of homeschool co-ops and groups in the metroplex area. You could e-mail to them and see if anyone would be willing to do that. Some mom's really miss it when their kids grow up. Also, there is Waxahachie Prep, where you homeschool some and go to school for some. It is a university model school, so they take the classes that you want them to take.

It might be tricky to try homeschooling if you are a full time student. Totally depends on how much of a self starter your child is. I began homeschooling at 4th grade and my son is very self sufficient. I make his assignments ( we are using the Sonlight program this year). He does them and I check them and go over them with him at night. I work from home and work for myself so I have complete flexibility which helps enormously. If he gets stuck on something,or if I want to do a special study ( right now it's politics and investing) then I can devote the time I need to him during the day.

There are lots of online programs available and again, that depends on your child and if they want to learn via computer. Texas has a huge homeschool community. Just reach out and start investigating!
