Local Vacation

Any suggestion on 3 day, near Austin vacation for the end of Nov? I have been looking into Fredericksburg. Some of the B&B or cabins do not allow children. I have only lived here for a couple years so any other cute towns or places to stay would be helpful. Cabin camping would also work. The in-laws will be visiting for Thanksgiven and we thought it would be nice for them to see something other than our house.

What can I do next?

Dear J.,

We have been to foxfirecabins.com two times and always really enjoyed it. Both times we stayed in the cabin named Shady Oak. It is a two bedroom, with a great living area and covered deck. It took us about 3 1/2 to 4 hours to drive there from Austin. It is in what I call "The Real Hill Country." Lots and lots of real hills. It is quite a beautiful area near Utopia, Leakey, and Bandara, and is right by the Sabinal River.

Hope you find a great place.

My husband and I just took our 5 month old on our first vacation. We went to the Frio River and Garner State Park and it was WONDERFUL!! There's lots of cabins all along the Frio, just look it up on the net, it's quiet and beautiful and lots of shallow places along the river that baby can splash around in. Our cabin had no TV, a barbeque pit, and a full kitchen, so we spent all weekend with coffee on the porch at sunrise, cook-outs, stories, and playing in the river. I can't recommend it enough.

The Frio River has cabins and they are very affordable. I'd try searching Bourne, Texas. We've stayed there with little ones and we all had a blast.

Also, in the other direction, cabins at Canyon of the Eagles are basic, but ok. Best perk: a restaurant on the grounds, fishing, hiking, boat tour of the canyon, and only an hour drive. We've been there for Thanksgiving. Our kids took their bikes -fun!

Good Luck!

Check out Lost Maples in the hill country. It is about 2 hours from here in the heart of the Texas Hills Country. It is beautiful out there.

My family has enjoyed one of the "dude"-type ranches around Boerne, northwest of San Antonio. There are many of them, so do an internet search to find some that are up your alley. Most offer group trailrides, family-style dining, peace and quiet, and many of them are along the Guadalupe River. Some are fancy, almost spa-like. Others are quite rustic, almost summer-camp-like.

Wimberly and Blanco - B&Bs, market, hill country, streams, hiking
Inks Lake or Bastrop State Park - cabins
Day trip to Llano or Lockhart to eat good BBQ and check out the old town centers
Check with AAA to see if there are any town events/festivals nearby

I totally agree with the Lost Maples and Garner State Park recs!!! There will be fall color at Lost Maples and the whole area is wonderful at any time of year! We always stay at Neal's Campground in Concan. They have cabins.

The Gruene Mansion Inn in Gruene on the Guadalupe
(just south of San Marcos, north of New Braunfels)
They do allow kiddos.

They have cabin rooms that are along the River or you can stay in one of the Mansion rooms.
It's a very small town with some good local restaurants and lots of cute little shops. The Gristmill restaurant is the at the top of the list and the Gruene hall for beer and music, both are historic buildings. From there you can go to other spots Hill Country Wineries or even shopping at the outlet malls if that interests your guest.

Me and my girlfriends have gone down sometime during the holidays for a few years now. It's a nice time.
