Local Hotels and Coping with Construction

Hi everyone!
Unfortunately we had a house flood recently and we're going to need to have a lot of work done to our house. We will probably need to go to a hotel for a few days. We have an ornery 2-year-old and a 3-month-old and have never been brave enough to try to stay in a hotel with the kids. Any tips? We're thinking about getting some kind of suite so my two-year-old can go to bed without us keeping him up until we go to bed. Do you have any area hotels you would recommend? We live near College and Quivira, but are willing to go a little further. I would love to hear any other stories of living with very young children and construction. Thanks!

What can I do next?

The Holtze Executive Village is great for families! They have 2 bedrooms and a fully stocked kitchen. My kids like going there just for a weekend to get away. It's just over $100/night I think!!

I would recommend anything with a suite. Drury, Embassy Suites, etc. All those places have a little more breathing room to move around and usually have 2 TVs which is really great if the kids want to watch "their" progams and you want to watch yours...plus it's good when you want to put them to bed but still stay up past their bedtime.

I also like these two because they offer free breakfasts! Which is REALLY awesome when your eating out of mini-fridges and barbie sized microwaves!

Pick a place with a nice pool so you have something else to do with them and maybe near a park or someplace you feel safe walking around with them.

You've gotten some great suggestions already. I have an almost-three-year-old boy and an almost-one-year-old boy. I really recommend checking out the Web site www.vrbo.com. It is vacation rentals by owner. Basically, these are second houses for people that they rent out while they are not there. Many times, you can get them for way cheaper than a hotel, and they already have a kitchen, several bedrooms, and good living areas. Most often the kitchen already comes with pots and pans, dishes, etc. You can usually get deals for staying for one week.
Otherwise, get either a suite or two adjoining rooms so you can have one quiet area and one "living" area. We've done a lot of hotel stays, and as long as you set things up when you first get there, you should be fine.

Chase Suites hotels are all suites and I think they have decent rates. You would even have a little kitchen so you could still make some meals instead of eating out all the time. They are at 110th and Lamar, right next to the OP Covention Center. There number is ###-###-####. If you stay there let Heidi know that R. Wagner sent you!

I think the previous poster was talking about Chase Suites. My parents stayed at the one up by the airport a few years back and we did Thanksgiving Dinner there with mom, dad, sister (adult), brother and s-i-l and their 4 children under 7 and hubby and me. It was set up like a townhome. Kitchen/living area and all. It was a little cramped with all those people, but if we can have Thanksgiving dinner there with 11 people, a family of 4 should have plenty of space :). Much less "foreign" than a hotel. If you go the regular hotel route, look for a suite with a separate room, not only because of bedtime issues, but being on top of each other all the time in a small space can be stressful. If you're home is anything like mine, what was supposed to be a couple of day fix can turn into more without warning. Better to be more comfortable just in case.

I stayed at Holtze Executive Village off of College really close to Quivera. It had 2 bedrooms, kitchen, dining, and living area. I'm not sure what price range your looking for and I can't really remember what I paid for it. It was nice and I enjoyed my stay. Hope the contruction goes quickly and your family is home ASAP!!

extended stay places have kitchens and two bedrooms and your insurance may cover this. We hada fire and were displaced for 9 months. We had insurance and insisted on a furnished apartment. It came with even pots pans, towels, the works.

We had a situation where we were "homeless" about 6 years ago when we had sold our home and the one we were building was way behind schedule. My kids were 3 and 1. It was important at that age that I had a kitchen area and seperate sitting area. It was great to have the fridge to keep their milk, snacks, etc. in, as well as a kitchen, so extra money wasn't spent on eating out all the time. It's early and I'm drawing a blank of the name of the place we stayed at - it's close to 435 between Metcalf and Nall. I think there's something similar off of 435 and Quivira. But, I would recommend making sure you get a place that has some type of breakfast - that will save you even more. I would also tell the hotels your situation, they may offer you a dicount.
Good luck,

L.,
I had the same thing happen in our kitchen with a 2 year old and a 4 month old! We stayed in a hotel with 2 rooms and it was quite comfortable and both kids did pretty well. Hopefully you will have the same experience. I don't know if there are any Comfort Suites around where you are, but thats what we stayed in and it was very nice. It also helped that my husband was the reconstruction expert that cleaned up the water and rebuilt our kitchen. If you don't already have a great contractor working for you, I could pass on his info if you are interested. I am always trying to network for him!! He is great with the insurance companies to get your what you need to get back in your house! (I know, shameless plug, but he is really great!!)

Good luck with it!

Hi L. -

I am so sorry that happened to you!! I know how hard it is - the same thing happened to us a few years ago. We were out of our house for 6wks. We stayed at Deer Creek Apartments (Metcalf & 125th). They have fully furnished apartments, including kitchen items, for rent, and they discount the price based on the length of stay. It wasn't our home, but it was a nice place for our family to stay :)

Good luck to you!!
