Lobbing Marshmallows

Mamas & Papas-

I was just out on my balcony, when I heard the mail carrier yelling on the street below. Seems someone had thrown marshmallows at or near her. I'm not sure which unit it was from, but I decided to report it to the management. Bet it was some kids having a little fun, but I'd hate for the co-op to get sued if they escalate and someone gets hurt.

I remember being escorted out of the trump tower as a tween because a friend dropped pennies from the 4th floor into a fountain/ wishing well on the ground floor. We hadn't thought things through at the time, and just thought it was good fun. Seems I am on the other side of this now.

Have you had any similar blasts from the past now that you are an adult?

Best,
F. B.

I mostly just get a lot of eyebrow exercise while walking at the mall. Lol. Overhearing/watching teens thinking they are "all that" is pretty entertaining.

And telling my 4yo, "Don't you DARE spray me with that water gun!" Only to have my husband dump a pitcher of water over my head from behind. :/ lol.

Wow.
Is nothing sacred anymore?
I had forgotten all about the many many lovely summer days I had spent in my childhood lobbing marshmallows at unsuspecting pedestrians!

If they were stale marshmallows, they might have hurt. I remember as kids not thinking before we acted....

This past weekend, I had to remind my 12 year old son, that was getting out the pool ready to lob me with water that I had electronics on me and it would NOT be wise...UNTIL I set my stuff aside...then it was ON!!!

We have water balloon fights in our backyard....still love that!!!

I'm still trying to figure out why someone would be upset at being pelted with sugar-coated air. If that was the worst thing that ever happened to me, I would count myself one very happy camper indeed.

I don't recall getting into trouble for pranks, but for trying to date guys much older than I was.

When we were in high school, we would throw tortillas onto the football field after a touchdown. We did it only because they flew really well - basically like frisbees - and they were soft enough that they wouldn't hurt anyone if the tortillas hit them. Well... one of the schools we were playing against complained that it was racist or demeaning to their culture (Latino) and we weren't allowed to do it anymore. Purely harmless, meaningless fun in our minds, but apparently offensive to others. This was in Southern California, where we have a huge Latino population, but also tons of people from all other cultures around the world.

lobbing marshmallows seems awfully tame to this geezer who generally thinks the current generation is frightfully degenerate<G>.
we did the usual for my time period- prank phone calls, water balloons at cars, stealing fruit from orchards, hiding on the beach near cooing couples and letting out bloodcurdling screams.
not one of them sounds remotely amusing now. but oh, we sure did think we were ever so clever!

Pennies dropped from a height can actually injure someone pretty severely. A marshmallow lobbed from a balcony doesn't strike me as a big problem. The victim should locate the source, stop, and open her mouth. I wouldn't be calling management over that, but that's just my opinion. I can't think of anything I did like that as a kid. I lived in the country and didn't really have the opportunity to torment others….

My son and I have great water fights in the morning, watering the garden.

He's become quite clever and sneaky for a seven year old!

Oh the memories of summer camp and the big marshmallow fight. Most people don't see the harm in tossing a few mashmallows but if they had been melted in any way or if the day is particularly hot. They melt and stick and are a son-of-a-gun to try to clean up and out.If my memory serves me well after several washes of my sleeping bag but no luck in getting all of the melted marshmallow gunck out of it, she just gave up and bought me a new one and the old one had to be tossed.

Thanks for bringing back the wonderful memories of camp days.

We have water fights in the kitchen - have been for years. I will spray my son (who is now 18) with the sprayer thingie and he will toss a cup of water at me - or vice versa.

We make a mess, laugh a lot, then mop it up.

Did this growing up with my Dad.

For Christmas one year, my husband and BIL each received a wrapped bag of jumbo marshmallows. As my BIL looked confusedly at his, my hubby opened his and hurled one at him. An all-out marshmallow war took hold on Christmas Eve. Needless to say, it was awesome.

It's always tough to look at things from an adult perspective, isn't it?? Add to that the things we learn about the environment. For example, no one throws rice at weddings anymore - it's either bird seed or flower petals.

Water balloons are fun but we've learned that the shredded leftovers are so hazardous to birds and animals. I think marshmallows are similar - hazardous to wildlife and you just KNOW the kids aren't going to clean up. In some ways it's a shame the letter carrier couldn't look the other way, but then again, she might not have known at first what they were throwing. And after all those kids had choking problems a few years ago by having contests to see who could put the most marshmallows in their mouths, we learned that marshmallows melt with body heat and block the airway.

You're right that we live in a society where people sue at the drop of a hat, and that's a problem. You're also right that things do escalate, and while marshmallows might be completely harmless, kids who escalate to dropping rocks off overpasses which smash windshields, I guess we can't allow pranks to go unchecked.
