I don't think there's anything wrong with having emergency supplies and a back stock of things. I have flash lights, candles batteries, lots and lots of canned goods. Extra water.
I live where we get some gnarly earthquakes not to mention the fact the the power goes out at the blink of an eye, sometimes for days.
However, if the world is going to end, it's going to end. To me, it doesn't matter how much energy you spend preparing for it.
Being prepared as much as possible to get through natural disasters I understand.
I'd rather spend my life living life as opposed to preparing for the end of it.
If the end is truly the end, what's the point?
But that's just me.

Watching it right now. It's a *little* ridiculous. I mean, there's being prepared for an emergency (which is what normal people do) and then there's THESE people who build bomb shelters and stock them with thousands of cans of food.

If the world is going to END, then there will be no *reason* for canned beans and flashlights!

If the wold ends in 2012, what's the point in stockpiling a bunker of food? You'll eventually run out and die anyways. Yes, these people are over the edge. No I didn't see the show.

If I stockpiled like that, I wouldn't tell anyone. My luck would be that there would be a dangerous survivor running loose and coming after my stockpile violently and I'd end up having to defend myself from attack anyway.

TLC - how do they find these people! Their shows are crazy.

It's nothing new.
There have always been survivalists.
I don't understand why some people being (extremely) prepared (for anything) bothers other people.

Personally, I benefit from living about 4 minutes from a grocery store. I barely have anything in my house on any given day and stop at the store at least 4 x per week or so to make sure I have something to make for dinner etc. I admit the whole 2012 thing intrigues/freaks me. Mainly because I watched a special about it on the History chanel and it is not just the Mayans that picked that fateful date in Dec 2012.. many other cultures picked the same day at separate times and I find that an odd coincidence. That said...I hope for the best (don't stock pile) and picture my son as a man every once in a while. I often think about about what one of my best girl friends once said....If the world was coming to an end and barely anyone was left that I love on the entire planet.,, no I don't want to stick around for that. I would not want to survive either. So these folks may be over the edge, yes...but on some level, I would hope I was friends with one of them just in case :-)

do you think just one extra roll of paper towels is enough to mop up a whole apocalypse mess? I'd get in a couple more if I were you. ;-). Maybe they're just creative hoarders. My grandparents had a bomb shelter in their backyard during WWII (no basements around where they lived), and I just loved the thought of it! What a great cubby house!

Hey... If I had my way:

I'd have a castle on hundreds of acres with secret passages and a batcave. (da-nana-na-na-na-naaa kind of batcave). With growlights for indoor gardening (the solarium, you know), and swimming pools, and horse, and libraries, and generators, and mazes, cold storage, dry storage, some laboratories, a fully equipped OR...

Whatever makes people happy.

I guess they need an excuse to live off the grid. But I know hundreds of people who're back of beyond, or on boats who have essentially done the same thing; but it's just because that's how they prefer to live, no excuse needed.

Well, if they're wrong then they'll be considered nutty. If they're right, the nuts will be running the asylum and we won't be here to see it! LOL I'm sure with the east coast earthquake and the northern hurricane they are saying it's foretelling the downfall for next year. I'm waiting to hear that on the news next. "Is this the beginning of the end?"

No I don't think they are over the edge. I think people should stockpile just in case, the 2012 side of it is another story though lol b/c I don't think anyone could really know when the world is ending. It reminds me of Tremors (the principle anyways) the older guy had all this ammo and concrete foundation under the property and everyone thought he was nuts until the tremor creatures came then he was the go to guy lol. If I had the money I would stockpile, right now I plan to escape and meet up with my best guy friend lol because he is crazy awesome outdoors, makes arrows/bows/knives and knows how to handle the outdoors.

I don't know if I've seen that particular show because I don't remember the name but I saw a show where one person actually recreated a steam engine in a truck and they had ways to communicate on the property of multiple acres in case they got separated, they had trenches and traps for trespassers, they had means to survive off their own property, and livestock not to mention stockpiled food. Then analysts would review their situation and tell them if they were wrong (like you are too visible to the road or something like that).

I keep thinking I should get the standard list of stuff ready, we have a lot that could tide us over because we shop at Costco and inevitibly duplicate some things. I should be a little more organized and official as well as check the water situation. Good thing to do as we are in earthquake country and keep hearing it's not a matter of if but when. From seeing the previews of the show though, I don't think I'd go anywhere near as far as the people featured did. Kind of like the bomb shelters of the 50s I guess.

I don't have anything like that...but after an east coast earth quake, tornado, and Cat 1 Hurricane in one week, I am over stocked on canned goods! Darn power didn't go out (thankfully!!!)

I have a sibling that tries to live like this, altho he doesn't reside in an area that allows for livestock. His garage/basement are stocked with canned foods, RME's, other supplies and weapons. He's done this for years. I didn't see the show, so I can't give an opinion about the folks who were shown.

i think it is good to have a small stock pile of foods like pasta and canned stuff... but only to get you through a few days like if we got snowed in with a nor-easter or this "hurricane"... nutty to go more than that though!
i have one friend who is a morman and has a closet full of stuff, she says her religion tells them to be prepared? im not sure if thats accurate or not but ok..

I never heard of the show but I've heard. A bit about 2012. Some people read some much into things that it's enough to make you insane. It will be like Y2K.... everyone was prepared for all the computers to reset and power to go out and I believe some thought that was the end also. And it came and went. I do however like to keep a stockpile for emergencies, not so much if I can't get to a store, but if anything should happen (whatever it may be), there is always a possibility that stores can't get restocked quickly. So I always have extras of the things we use often. Plus I stock up on groceries when there is a good sale and I have coupons to match the sale. My husband has the survivalist mentality, he has ready-to-eat meals, flashlights galor, water purification stuff, weird sleeping things that look like a piece of oversized tin foil to keep warm, and all kinds of other junk.
