I delivered my daughter at United. I really liked it there, but hated the fact that I had to change rooms. I am preferrably looking for a hospital that you stay in one room the whole time, there is a bed/fold out for husband, opportunity to use a midwife. Can you please give me your recommendations and why? Thanks in advance!!
Another vote for Woodwinds in Woodbury. I had my son there and they were great! The rooms were very nice, and the giant tub in the bathroom was SO nice to soak in after. (Before too, if you have enough time) My husband is 6'5", so any bed would be uncomfortable. They do have midwives availble. It's smaller and very pretty, and free parking for you and your visitors! St. Joseph's in Downtown St. Paul is AWESOME!! You can also do a waterbirth their as well (I had my second daughter at St. Joe's & we did the waterbirth-so nice and calm) The nurses are awesome too-super attentive. I highly recommend St. Joseph's in DT St. Paul.

I had all three of mine at St. Johns. I didn't have to move rooms however they were not very accomadating to the spouce or other children. My sister had both of hers at Lakeview Hospital in Stillwater and it was great! Nice big rooms with a place for daddy to sleep and the nurses and doctors are wonderful. If I were to have another (heaven forbid) I would go there. They even have little extras, a "toy box" for memories and a nice dinner for the new parents!! They also do water births and have midwives. Good luck. ps you can always call any of the hospitals and have a walk through and find out what they offer.
I wholeheartedly agree with Bridget. I loved St John's. The nurses ARE wonderful there. It was great not having to move rooms at all. Plus, parking is free unlike at United and you don't have to worry about traffic if you go into labor during rush hour--2 main reasons I chose St John's. It was a good thing too because we went to the hospital at 7 am on a Wednesday morning.
Hi there..and congrats! I delivered at Unity Hospital in Fridley (off of Osbourne and University) and I had a WONDERFUL experience. They have a great maternity ward and labor and delivery unit. They do have fold outs for the dads but my fiance said they weren't comfy. But I guess it's better than nothing. Anyway check and see if your doc delivers at Unity and if they do, go take the tour. I will be going back there for any subsequent kids.
I went to Regions in St. Paul for all 3 of my children & it was wonderful. I don't believe that you change rooms (I had c-sections) to deliver. My husband stayed in a cot in the room with me. They used to have a room with a full/queen bed but not sure if they still do. There are tours that you can attend to check things out. The nurses were great & midwives are there along with Dr's. Due to my ceseareans I could not use the midwives for delivery.

I would highly recommend Woodwinds Hospital in Woodbury=1st choice. Saint John's Hospital in Maplewood=2nd choice. Both of these give you a large room to yourself and amazing care. Woodwinds would not except any high risk deliveries or women with a history of needing c-section deliveries. Beautiful hospital, holistic (scented bath salts to help you relax, hands on massage/healing touch= if wanted, ect).You deliver in the same room that you stay in. St. John's on the other hand may not be as pretty of a hospital but they deal with all kinds (including high risk) pregnancies. Your room is nice and you also can deliver in the room (not be moved around). Great care at both & your husband can stay as long as you want him there.
I have 4 kids=16, 9, 4 & 23months. I too have delivered at United (didn't like it), Fairview Southdale (was not impressed), Woodwinds (loved it) & St John's (I was sick so baby needed NICU for a short time). Good Luck & Best Wishes!-Nicky
I highly recommend St. Johns in Maplewood - its not too far from you and the hospital is great. The rooms are huge and you stay in the same one the whole time. They are also very open to working with midwives and have foldout bed-things for your husband. I really loved my nurses and thought it was a great place.

It might be too long of a drive, but Woodwinds in Woodbury was wonderful. I delivered my first at United and had the same experience as you did. I initially was going to deliver using a midwife, but then found out I was having twins. Honestly, if I ever have to be hospitalized again, I want it to be at Woodwinds. It's a wonderful environment, the nursing staff is great, there is a fold out chair for husbands, you can do waterbirth and they have HUGE laboring tubs in every LD room.
One of my daughters was transported to Children's NICU after she was born and the nursing staff was SO supportive and helpful. They also suggested great ways to deal with the pain and made sure I got what ever I needed. I had a C-section, but normally you don't have to switch rooms.
It was an absolutely wonderful experience.
