Little Red Spot on My Son's Cheek

My 7 year old son got a little red spot on his face about a year ago, I thought at first it was a bug bite, or maybe a pimple even though it really did not look like one. A year later it's still there, the doctor said to put scar cream on it, well 4 months later it's still there. I am thinking about taking him to a dermatologist, but where we are living at right now temporary does have one that will see kids. Any advice on what it could be? I wish I could post a picture of the spot.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

It's flat mark, not raised, kind of like if he took a pink marker and made a dot on his cheek, the doctor only said to put scar medicine, which is not working, the doctors here not very good.
I am going to call the derm IN DFW my friend told me about a make an appt.

We are heading to TX for 2 weeks end of this month, to look at houses because we are moving this summer to there. Would it be crazy if I made him an appointment with one that was recommend to me in the DFW area?

I would make one now for where you are going to move to. It is notoriously difficult to get in to good dermatologists and you may have a 3+ month wait for an appointment anyways.

Good luck!

A dermatologist is definitely in order. Last time I had a small, hardly red bump below my nose. It turned out to be squamous cell carcinoma. The Dermatologist referred me to a plastic surgeon who did a great job.

Is it raised at all or flat? My daughter has had one for a long time too so I finally took her to a dermatologist. As I had started to assume from looking at pictures on the web, it's just a broken blood vessel. If it's completely flat like a red pen mark with maybe a little red around it, likely a broken blood vessel and nothing to worry about. Dr said it'll eventually go away. Maybe Google pics and compare.

A doctor should be able to pick up something like skin cancer - because very often they are the ones who send patients in to see dermatologists. So hopefully I'm thinking it's nothing too serious. But I agree, get him in to see a dermatologist - I would just go where ever you could get him in soonest. When I need to get us in, I put us on the cancellation list. That means they will call you up if someone cancels or they suddenly have an opening. We get in much sooner when we do that. That way you won't have to worry. If you do move and have to switch dermatologists (if it's something that needs care) they can pass on files. No biggie.

My daughter developed a mark at around grade primary. It's actually a birthmark. I know, I thought that was odd. But then they told me that birthmarks can appear up to school age. It's just an excess of pigment. They can be red, brown, etc.

I have some little red marks on my face. It's been where a capillary broke. Just a little red flat mark.

Anyways, hard for us to say - so better to get in :) Good luck

I wish you had taken him to the dermatologist last year. Go ahead and get an appointment. A pediatric dermatologist is your best bet, but it takes a long time to get in because they are very much in demand. Get your friend to give you the phone number and call it yourself.

I agree that you should make an appointment with a dermatologist in the area you plan to visit/move to. If you are looking in the DFW area, you should have no trouble finding someone through a major hospital or children's medical center. Just take the first appointment you can get during the 2 week visit. Good luck.

My daughter has a tiny red spot on her nose. It's just a tiny red dot. Not raised...looks like it's part of her skin. The dermatologist said it's just a blood vessel and sometimes that happens. There is nothing to do about it. Let us know what the doctor says about your son's spot. (Ps - we just went to a regular dermatologist not a kid's one. But the pediatrician said the same thing)

sounds like a broken blood vessel. nothing to do about it. it may or may not go away.
of course it's a good idea to see a dermatologist if you're really interested in figuring out what it is. you're likely to get better info than folks on the web who can't see it and aren't doctors, right?
what would be crazy about seeing one in the DFW area (whatever that means)? are the doctors there looney-tunes or something?

yes you could go to a dermatologist and have it checked out. or you could wait till you move then find a derm. to visit. i have so many freckles that are so many shades of tans and browns and dh has a few that are red. so it could just be a reddish colored freckle. i wouldn't be too worried about it but would make the appt for peace of mind.

My first thought is molluscum. I hope it's not that because it sucks. If you google this, beware...there are some nasty pics out there, but it usually starts out as small red bumps. They can turn into pimpley looking things. I would maybe start by asking the school nurse what she/he thinks and then going from there. Did the pediatrician not offer any other suggestions? Regardless a call back to the office is probably in order.
