How old do labrador retrievers usually live to be?

My labrador is 11yrs old. He lives for his food! He'd eat ALL DAY LONG if I allowed it. When it's dinnertime for him, he jumps/hops, runs, and gets really excited waiting until I bring his food to him. When he finally gets his bowl, he inhales the food till the last morsel then drinks some water, then licks the bowl clean. It's been going on like this for years...EVERY NIGHT!!! Well the last two nights, he's been really quiet about eating. He doesn't get as excited and it takes him a few minutes to even start eating. Also, he hasn't been finishing his food either.

I'm thinking he's going through a transition to the next phase of his life. So again, my question is:

Typically, how old do labradors live to be? Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

this is not the next phase of life. this is a dog that needs to see the vet. dogs will not tell you they are sick, so you have to take clues. not eating normally is a HUGE clue.

good luck!

Generally speaking retrievers live between 10 and 12 years. My golden lived to 20 and that was after having full out heat stroke at six. My other golden died at 8.

One thing I would like to mention is that retrievers retrieve. My golden, the one that lived forever, she would retrieve the dog's food who lived two doors down if we let her out the front door.

J.,
Sorry to hear about your BIG GUY not eating. That is usually not a good sign for A. older dog. I was a liscensed vet tech for 12 years before I became a mommy 3 years ago and I have seen them live to be anywhere between 8-12 but a typical age, if they do not get cancer or other health issues is around 10. check his mouth, see if his teeth are bothering him. has he been drooling lately more than usual? or has he been tilting his head to the side while he eats? smell his breath. Other than that most of the time when they really do not feel good they wont eat. Or when there has been a major change in something environmental. If he has a bad tooth try canned food. Sorry about all the dental information I've seen it be their teeth so often when they are hesitant to eat. I hope he is alright and I am sorry, it sucks when they get old.

Dogs are considered seniors at 7. Typical lifespan of labs are around 9-13 years or so, though I have met a rare few go to about 15. My lab mix is 11... she just had a vet check-up and the vet told us she looks like she could go a few more years.

It's a good idea to get him a senior well check.

my lab is goign to be 10yrs old very soon.. hes just like your dog he lives for food.. there are some days that he just doesnt want to eat his food.. he wants something else something better.. he will hold out until after we eat dinner to see what he can get lol, then later on he will go and eat whats in his bowl, hes a spoiled brat.. i will say thought some days hes his normal hyperactive self and others hes a little lethargic.. his joints are starting to get stiff u can see it when hes been sleeping for a long time and he goes to get up ..bottom line, hes getting old -unfortunatley - as far as i know average life for a lab is 10-13yrs .. however my cousins had a lab that lived to be 14 it all depends on your dogs health and what kind of shape hes in -my big lug is around 115lbs hes a big boy so im not expecting miracles =( the bigger the dog the shorter the life span

Mine lived to be 12. In general, labs live about 10-13 years. My vet had told me that labs are such people pleasers that you won't even know something is wrong untl something is REALLY wrong. They'll run around and play on a broken leg and still inhale food until they just physically can't. My friend's lab ended up having stage 4 cancer, but she didn't know until the very end because the dog acted completely fine. So, if a lab is acting off, it might be beneficial to take it to the vet.

Around 10 to 12 is probably average, but they can live much longer. It could be something simple like he ate something outside that didn't agree with him. Ia it possible he has a tooth that is bothering him, arthritis or something else that may make him slightly painful? A vet visit might be in order, possibly with blood work and other diagostics. A blood panel is great and can give you and your vet a lot of information and a baseline if nothing else. If it came on suddenly it is probably worth looking for the cause of a change.
Did you by any chance change or open a new bag of food recently?
Growing up our golden lived to just shy of 17. We currently have a lab who is 8.5 and is full of energy and like your dog lives for food. But also her ball. She also just had surgery yesterday to remove a couple of masses ans a dental since she was already under anesthesia.

Goos luck to you and your pup and hope he is back to his normal food self soon.

Dogs life span usually go by size. The bigger they are, the shorter their life span. Labs generally live 12-14 years. I've known a lot of people with labs and most them have lived at least until 12.

Of course you always have the rare things. We had a german shepard mix that lived till 20. :)

Hugs to your big guy!!! I hate it when dogs get sick. Don't you wish for just one minute they could talk and tell you where it hurts? Please take him to a great vet that will rule out all of the possibilities and get him back to his old self.

I know you didn't ask this question, but could you possibly divide his food into 2 meals--breakfast and dinner. We had a large breed dog that was food crazy also and I gave her two smaller meals, a raised bowl and tried to have her avoid the jumping and running thing so as to avoid bloat. Labs are at risk for this, too.

Good luck and keep us posted!

I think a dog his size, lives between 9-14 yrs old. sorry. I've always had bigger dogs and their lives ranged from 9-14 yrs old. I would take him to the vet and get him checked out. I'd recommend maybe an xray or ultrasound of his abdomen (the same thing happened with one of my dogs , the not eating thing)

both of my dogs went thru gastroenteritis in the past 3 weeks. Lethargic, not wanting to eat nor play. Ended up with severe cramping which caused slow movements on both their parts. AND yellow diarrhea. No fever for either of them...nor vomiting.

The vet checked for parasites, gave us special food + antibiotics + probiotics. The older dog has fully bounced back. The younger dog was just diagnosed last Thursday....& he's still recovering.

It's amazing how this has impacted our dogs & our lives....:(

Mine passed at 14 in August. That is considered pretty old for a Lab, although I had two other friends who lost their Lab at that same age. All three were extremely well taken care of. I considered anything after 10 to be normal, anything after 12 to be a huge bonus.
