Let's Talk About TP

OK, I'm pretty sure that the clogging problem we are having in our master bathroom is due to the toilet paper we are using. I am wondering if anyone has a suggestion of a TP that does the job it needs to do but then dissolves quickly? I'm not willing to use sandpaper, so it has to be decent stuff :).

Thanks Ladies!

So What Happened?

Sounds like our problem is similar to Itsacrazylife. It seems like when it starts getting cold we start having these problems again!!

Honestly, call any septic pumping company and ask them what they recommend. Plumbers may also know. There is special TP for RVs and boats that disintegrates more easily.

My guess is, they are using way too much. Consider the disposable wipes or get people to flush part way through. But I'm wondering if you need a good declogging because there may be accumulated build-up or, worse, an object down there.

I wonder if you have the same problem we do. We have had the pipe cleaned out, we have chagned paper. Very annoying. The toilet seems clogged or just does not flush completely. No idea why. It seems to happen with changes in weather which is very weird. Sometimes, adding a bucket or large cup of water helps it along when we first flush.

It might be the TP or it might not be.
Blockages can happen.
People flush and pour all kinds of stuff down their drains.
Tampons can cause lots of trouble.
Toys, keys, grease (down the kitchen sink usually but when it solidifies it can clog anywhere down the line), and then there's tree roots, too, which can grow into the pipes and block things.
It might be worth calling a plumber to get it cleared up once and for all.

If its only in 1 bathroom then its probably not a toilet paper issue unless someone is trying to flush a large amount all at once. If you use tampons and flush them after that can cause a huge issue. If the angle on the drain isn't correct that could also be your problem. And if there are burrs inside the drain pipe that can snag things making the pipe smaller causing problems.

I would not assume it is the TP. At all.

Why? Well, for starters, this is happening in your master bathroom--and not elsewhere. Do you use different TP in the other bathroom in your home?

I'd have the lines checked out, bc it doesn't sound even remotely TP related to me.

I have lousy, older plumbing and a terrible septic system and TP isn't an issue so I wouldn't assume that's the problem. Have you had a plumber check the lines for issues?

Anyway to answer your question...we use regular Charmin (red package) and Trader Joe's Ultra Soft. Both are good quality and soft. Life's to short for cheap TP!

Are you sure it's not just too much TP? tampons? those flushable wet wipes?
You may also want to get your line checked.
I use the thicker, nicer TP (whatever is on sale) but we use the bare minimum each time. We only use the flushable wipes for #2 and yes, I flush my tampons without a problem.
So I think it's probably an issue of the amount OR you have a sewage line problem.

Have you considered using cloth?
I like it better than paper. I keep squares in a basket next to my toilet, and a small bucket of soapy water with a lid as well. Drop the soiled cloths into the bucket, and run them through the washing machine, and reuse.
No paper, no paper clogs.

Also, if you're flushing tampons, stop. According to my plumber, the number 1 cause of clogs is tampons, with wipes a close second. Even if the wipes say they're flushable, they take a long time to break down.

We used to use Charmin Ultra and our plumber told us to stop. It was too heavy of a TP. We now use either Charmin (red package) or Charmin Basic (orange package). They DO NOT feel like sandpaper.

No one (like your husband?) throws dental floss in the toilet, do they? That cost me a $75 plumbing bill. I didn't even realize that I was doing it until I caught myself doing it after the plumber snaked out my toilet. I could have sworn I hadn't - it was just one of those mindless things we do and what a shock when I realized that it was me!

Ask a plumber. Seriously, they really know in detail what goes into toilets and what shouldn't.

I would not just assume the issue is toilet paper, either.

We had a plumber in recently to snake a few things, and he noted that while TP can clog toilets, VERY often the issue is that something else got down there that the householder never realized went in and it's creating a block -- they've seen everything from shampoo bottle caps to hair ties to razors etc. down toilets and other drains, stuff that people swore "couldn't be down there, it was nowhere near the toilet/shower drain/sink" but was. Yep, talking with the plumber was pretty informative! And though it's the master bath toilet...do you have younger kids who ever go in there? My friend had ages of repeated clogs and slow-running toilets and it turned out, twice, that her son had put small toys down the toilet and flushed them, even though she was sure he hadn't. The plumber fished them up.

Oh, if you ever use, or you use on your kids, any of those "flushable wet wipes" -- stop immediately. The plumber said that those are his number one hate because despite the "flushable" claim they do clog toilets all the time!

We've used the Kirkland brand for years. Never any issues.

A couple yes ago my husband took out the 4 toilets that the builder put in and upgraded with a great new toilet and no issues at all with the new toilets. He even installed them in our daughters condo as well.

Scott tissue dissolves - it's the only kind we use and we have cesspools in my area. We also don't flush tampons. We wrap them and throw them out - gross I know but with a 60 year old septic systems (with some newer add-ons) we don't take chances.

Years ago our plumber suggested Scott as the only TP that's septic system friendly.

My cousin has a snake that cleans out clogs. It's years old. I'm guessing he got it from some sort of home supply store.

It winds up into a shell. You gradually unwind it as you push it down the drain. I've not used it and he's not around so that's all I can tell you. I suggest you ask about it at a plumbing supply store.

i use 7th generation. but TP is the ONLY thing (well, other than poo) that goes into the commode. wet wipes get wrapped in TP and deposited in the trash, which obviously gets emptied frequently. no tampons or floss or even tissues go into our septic system.
if your issue is just in one bathroom, though, it's probably not your TP.
