Ok Mama's here is probably a stupid question. I made a pot roast on Sunday afternoon. It was really good. I covered it good and put it in the fridge. Is it still good? I am thinking about making it into soup. I usually do that in the first day or 2 but its been3 and a half days. Still good to toss it? In the past I would never have given it a thought but since its been 3 days not sure. thanks

What can I do next?

I would let it go 4-5 days at the most. I'm not big on leftovers I am deff. an early tosser. But I think it will be good. As long as it still smells fine and looks good, which I can't imagine it wouldn't, it's only been 3 days. You're good!!

3 days is fine. My rule is: When in doubt, throw it out!

Totally fine. I'd make the soup today, but don't throw it out. (And I'm a thrower - I tossed some "perfectly good" milk yesterday because it was 3 days past the expiration date, even though it smelled fine). Enjoy your soup!

I love leftovers and what helps me know when to toss em' is a little magnet I got from The Container Store....shows appropriate times to store different meats in the fridge or freezer. I have one that's a metric conversion for baking too....love them! They make great Christmas presents for people who love to cook too!

I would still be eating it. If you're worried, I take the safe route, but wouldn't hesitate to eat potroast 3 days old. You can be sure to heat it over 140 degrees. (The temperature range in which most bacteria grow is between 40 degrees F and 140 degrees F. )

It's still good, if you've stored it properly. Enjoy. D.

3 days in the fridge is fine. Shred it up and use it in tacos/burritos/fajitos, or shredded beef & barbecue sandwiches or in soup, etc.! If you're worried that 1 leftover meal won't use it all up, just freeze the rest--it'll keep for a couple months in the freezer.

Roast beef left overs in a cold frig will last a week.

When you finish the roast beef meal, let it cool in the pot, then put it in a ziplock type bag and put it in the freezer. Then it will last for weeks.

The expiration dates the government requires manufactures to put on food is another example of government and big brother ignorance. When the archeologists found and opened King Tut's tomb in Egypt, they found wheat over 2400 years old. According to our "all-knowing" USDA, the wheat was CENTURIES out of date and unfit for human consumption. The scientists took the wheat and grew it and helped give modern wheat better disease resistance.

I have bought out of date milk, cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, bread, and meat. My kids grew up on it. We never had problems with sickness or any other problems. I've paid 25 cents for a gallon of milk, 5 cents for bread, 10 cents per pound for cottage cheese, 25 to 50 cents a pound for cheese. My wife and I were invited over to a friend's house for steak on the grill. When the wife took the steaks out of the freezer she noticed the steaks were one day out of date. She made her husband go buy more steaks and put the still frozen t-bone steaks in the trash.

I'm glad and sad there are a lot of ignorant people that believe that once the government's expiration date is reached the food is no longer any good. I'm glad because it gives me an opportunity to get really good deals on near expiration date foods or out of date food and buy them really cheap. I'm sad because there are a lot of families struggling to get by that throw good food away or pass up near expiration date bargains.

Example: My wife and I love shrimp alfredo. Even the cheapest shrimp is $5 per pound. I buy it on a regular basis for $2.25 to $2.50 per pound because it goes out of date "today". I take the shrimp out of the store container, rinse it off, put it in a zip lock type sandwich baggie and place it in the freezer. When we want shrimp alfedo, I thaw the shrimp, cook the noodles, pour on the alfredo sauce and serve. I buy everything on sale. The shrimp is $2.50 for a pound, the noodles, $0.16 for 7 oz pkg, the alfredo sauce (ragu), $0.99 on sale. So for less than $4, I can put shrimp alfedo together and it will last my wife and I for two dinners each. Less than $1 per serving. ;-)

Learn from a good cook and prudent shopper when food becomes bad, and DON'T BELIEVE THE GOVERNMENT. You'll save lots of money and live much better. Also, this topic has come up on mamapedia before. Look it up and learn from the answers.

Good luck to you and yours.
