Leaky Nighttime Diaper

My 18 month old sons diaper leaks every night. We use the Huggies overnight and I've tried both the size 4 and size 5. I've even tried those little rubber-ish pants over his diaper and his jammies are still wet in the morning. Yes he drinks 8 oz of milk before bed, but so do a lot of babies. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

My daughter will be 2 in october and she still has the leaky diaper syndrome. I have also tried many things and she also drinks right before bed. I have only been able to wake her up in the middle of the night and change her. SHe goes right back to sleep so for me it isn't that big of a deal and i also work second shift. That was the only thing that works for me.

Yes, get him off the 8 ounces before bed. Try either keeping him up a little longer after he drinks that much or giving it to him earlier. Not only is this the reason he's wetting that much but you are really going to have a problem when you start potty training him if he wants that much at bedtime.

I have had the same problem with my son since about a year old and he is now 2.5, but I found that once we stopped letting him drink an hour before bedtime, the leaks quit almost instantly. I have never had good luck with LUVS, but apparently other people have. I do use the huggies overnite, but he's almost outgrown the size 5, and they rarely have size 6 in-stock anywhere. If I don't have overnites, the "daily wear" pampers cruisers work pretty good when they don't drink alot before bed. Good luck.

if your child is thirsty, he should drink something...thats obvious as you seem to know. but switch to luvs ....i used them for all 3 of my kids and not once did any of them have any leaks.....and my youngest was on a diuretic for heart problems so she peed even more than most babies at her age....still no leaks...good luck

i would definitely cut back the milk at bed time...that will make him have to go more. but also try switching brands. i always had problems with huggies leaking, even when my daughter was a new born. i use luvs. they are very absorbant, fit good, and are a lot less expensive than other brands.

My suggestion would be to stop giving him liquids before bed. If you continue, you will continue changing sheets in the middle of the night every night - or in the morning if the cold wet stinkiness doesn't wake him up. Yeah it'll take him a night or two to get over it when you stop, but it's in his best interest. He should be down to three meals and two snacks by now anyway... If you don't want to, you can buy rubber sheets....

If you discontinue liquids a couple hours prior to bedtime and trying different brands of overnights and the bedwetting continues, I'd suggest saying something to his pediatrician.

Definitely cut back on the milk. If you don't want to cut it out all at once you could give him less and less over a period of time or you can simply give him his milk earlier in the evening. I would also try sitting him on the potty just before bed. He may not get it at first but once he goes for the first time not only will he go less at night, you will be well on your way to potty training!

This seemed to work pretty well for me. I have two daughters so I don't know how it would work with a boy. My girls usually get a bath before bed and before I put them in the tub they go potty. I started this around 18 months with both of them. My second daughter just turned two a few weeks ago and is already potty trained...with occasional accidents of course!

You could also try training pants...I think they make a special night time version.

Good Luck!

I think it could be the bottle before bed, too. My son is 20-months and is potty trained. He doesn't get anything an hour or two before bed. My best friends son is almost three and they have that problem even through nap time. I would let your son have drinks at meals and have one out for him the rest of the day, but not carry it around with him. My dad lets my son do that and that is when he pees his pants. Hope this may help.

I started out using pampers on my son and then Huggies. I finally went to Luvs and have not had a problem since. My doctor told me that just like men, little boys pee pees tend to lay to one side. What is happening is that after peeing so much in one place that the diaper is getting full in that area and can't hold any more. Luvs has the leak gaurd and it has taken care of our problems. If it helps, my son is 17 months old and in the 80% in height and weight and we use size 5. By the time he is put in his pj's and goes to bed till the time he gets up is 12hrs with no leaks. He also usually drinks an 8oz sippy cup of milk right before bed. Good luck
Oh, a friend of mine had the same problem and she refused to switch from Pampers so she pushed his pee pee down towards his feet when she put the diaper on. She swears it did the trick. I was afraid of it moving. Besides, Luvs is cheaper anyway.

Hello H., I think you should stop giving your baby a bottle right before going to bed. It contributes to the problem. Also, you may want to switch to Pampers or Luvs. I never had problems with any of these brands, and my baby drinks a lot of water during the day!
My baby is 15 mo old, and he has his last meal at 6 o'clock including 4 oz of milk, after that if I notice he is hungry (not usual) he drinks a little bit of vanilla smoothie.(He goes to sleep at 8'oclock)
At this age, babies should have their calories mostly from food than from milk itself, so I suggest you that you give your baby 4-5 oz of milk with each meal. I give my baby 6 oz of milk just in the morning, though.

good luck!!

Have you tried Luvs? I have two boys and they seem to be the only diapers that ever worked well - no leaks. Make sure he's "pointed south" too!

Yes, lots of babies drink before bed, then again lots don't. Yours might just need to be one of the ones who doesn't have a bottle before bed. It would solve your problem of leaking diapers.

I would maybe try the huggies supreme or pampers. I know they say overnites but yea well they dont really mean it..lol..or try giving him a little less milk. I have a 22 month old son and i started filling his cup only halfway and for him alot of the comfort is just having the cup with him not really the contents...hope this helps and good luck

The only diapers that I have found that work overnight is Pampers. Every stage was leak proof for my boys and they sleep a lot and pee a lot at night!! Luvs was probably the worst then huggies, but pampers i LOVE LOVE LOVE and if you regularly buy pampers they have a program where you can enter the codes when you buy them and get toys from fisher price I believe. Got to Pampers.com to check it out!
