Late Pregnancy Weight Gain

Hello ladies -

I have a, probably, silly question. I am 37 weeks along and recently my weight gain has dramatically increased. I would say 1/3 of my total gain has happened in the last month. I haven't changed my eating habits and while my exercise has slowed down some due to my size, I am still active. I have talked to my doctor and there are no issues with my blood pressure, blood sugar, etc.

Has anyone else experienced this? I certainly have some room to modify my diet but to be honest after having good gain my whole pregnancy I am frustrated by the idea of being super careful now in the last few weeks when I feel bad already and just want to coast. I keep hearing that the "norm" is for weight gain to slow or stop your last month, but that's certainly not what I am experiencing.

Just for historical purposes ... this happened with my last pregnancy as well (a really big spike in the last month) BUT, that time around my diet was terrible and my total weight gain was so high I assumed it was due to that.

Any thoughts or experiences you have to share I'd really appreciate it!

Thank you all for the responses! My weight has finally settled down and I have started dropping a pound a week now that I am full term. Thanks for helping me hang in there!

Same thing happened with me for both of my pregnancies. With my son I did everything perfectly, and people were telling me I wasn't gaining enough and didn't trust my midwife b/c I wasn't gaining a lot. Then in the last month I gained about 20 lbs. With my daughter I was sick for the last 2 weeks, but still gained 10 lbs or so then. If you're doing everything right, don't worry about it. It may be mostly water and you won't even know that until after the baby is born. If not, it just means you might have to work a little more to lose it if you want.

Hello,

When I got pregnant with my first I was not showing until 7 months and that was barely in the last month I gained lots and lots of weight, the baby is growing more.... I ended up putting on 46 pounds at the end of my pregnancy and the weight did not come until the end of it. I would not worry about it if your doctor sees nothing wrong with you adding weight don't concern yourself with it.
Good Luck

I'm pretty sure this is normal - you are almost to the finish line, so don't worry about it! I wouldn't modify my diet to gain less, I would coast and not worry about it till after the baby is born. :)

I gained most of my weight the first month and then the towards the end. If I remember reading right, your baby is gaining about 1/2lb a week at this point. Good luck...if your health don't stress about it. :)

Hi A.,

Don't stress over the weight! I've had three kids and I always gained the most weight of the pregnancy in the last month and a half. I was always told that this was the stage when -now that the baby has fully developed, now all he/she has to do is gain weight. So, probably some of the weight gain your talking about is baby. In my opinion - with all that we have to deal with at this time in the pregnancy, you deserve to eat what you want, when you want. You'll have time after the baby is born to worry about your weight and take it off. You deserve to sit, with your feet up, relax, enjoy this time. As long as your doctor doesn't think its a problem, you shouldn't worry either!
Good luck and I hope all goes well!!!

My first baby was born 3 weeks early, but I had gained a lot the entire pregnancy. I did really well with my second baby until the last month when I piled it on. Part of it was I was done being pregnant and I know I ate to compensate and make myself feel better. The doctor wasn't thrilled with the gain, but I figured I would enjoy the last few weeks as much as I could and knew I would have to lose it later. If your doctor isn't worried then don't worry about it.

The same thing happened to me. I even got a sonogram in the end because I was measuring large. I gained 40 pounds total. I think it was all water weight. When I got home from the hospital, I had already lost 30 of those pounds. I would talk about it with your doctor, but it is probably nothing to worry about.

Hi

With my first baby I gained 28lbs in the first 20 wks and then didn't really gain much more for the rest of the pregnancy , with my second baby I gained not much at all until around 35 wks and then bam I piled on about 14lbs in those last weeks , it differs from pregnancy to pregnancy , what you have to keep in mind is that baby is just getting fatter from week 36 , they are fully developed and just need to fatten up ready for birth , you could also find that once baby is born you may have been carrying excess water , that can add a lot to your weight. Try not to worry too much , I'm sure you are not sat eating chocolate for every meal!

Good luck
