Late Period, Negative HPT Tests

I have googled and searched and read about this quite a bit and I just wanted to finally ask a pretty simple question:

Are there mothers here who tested negative on HPTs in the first weeks after their last period, but eventually found out they were pregnant? I have read a lot of questions from people like me (who are late and have taken multiple HPTS, only to get repeated negative results), but there aren't a lot of follow ups from folks who tested negative but were actually pregnant (and went on to deliver a healthy baby).

I am just two weeks shy of my 40th birthday. This would be my first child. We were not actively trying, but were at the "actively not preventing" stage. My period is like clockwork - never late. My last period was December 12th - I was due for my last period on January 11th. It is the 4th of February and I have half a dozen negative pregnancy tests telling me I am not. I am inclined to believe them and assume that I am just having a weird cycle or something, but I have a nagging thought that I might be pregnant.

Might be wishful thinking, given how accurate the tests are. Just thought I would ask if there are any mothers here who initially got a negative result on their HPT, but went on to have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy child.

Thanks so much -
K

So What Happened?

Thanks, all of you, for your responses. I really appreciate your time and insights.

And out of nowhere, 27 days after my missed period, I finally got my period. I was pretty surprised and yet not really - it raised more questions than it answered. I am actually more worried now than I was when I thought I might be pregnant, as I have NO idea what made my clockwork cycle go absolutely nuts. I had such awful cramps the first day (yesterday) that I thought I was going to pass out, and yet the flow isn't nearly what I am used to.

I am going in for a FSH test next month, and going to start charting my ovulation and cross my fingers for a few months. I suspect I may be right back here, reading old questions about infertility and options and all of that. Thanks again so much for being such a wonderful resource.

You may have ovulated late, you can keep taking tests- just wait a few days in between each one.
Next month you might try take ovulation tests if you arent pregnant, then you can know when you are ovulating- try for that time and that will also give you a really good knowledge of when to expect your period.
I hope all goes well for you!

One of my closest friends had a similar situation to this. Long story short, she found out she was pregnant when she was 6 months along. She had been testing the previous months but nothing had came out positive, and she had gained no weight, and had no "belly". She realized her stomach was kicking one night and finally went to the doctor who comfirmed obviously. The urine test at the office were also negative, the Doctor really had no explanation for my friend as to why this happened. She had her little girl 6 weeks early in December, she has serious health problems and spent a long time in the NICU. My friend is never going to be able to forgive herself for not making an appointment sooner.

I urge you, if there is any feeling that you might be pregnant please go to the doctor for a test. I know it is rare to not know for so many months but it does happen.

Not really an answer to your question, just something to think about. Good luck!

Not exactly the same but I had a negative blood test @ doc office. Now I have a perfect 8 yr old, the result of that negative test. I did have a positive HPT, though.

No experience, but it seems like a trip to the doctor is a good idea. You could be pregnant or your hormones could be changing for other reasons. Maybe your thyroid is off? Sleep deprived? Sudden change to your diet or exercise habits? Hard as it is to consider, could menopause be starting?

I had a negative result for almost 3 weeks past my period, then got a faint positive. When I went to my doctors I found out that I wasn't as far along as I should have been going off my period. Now I have a healthy 2 year old.

It's very possible that you are - I have a close friend who tested after her missed period but consistently got negative results when she was, in fact, pregnant. If you don't get a positive test at the doctor and nothing else seem to be an issue, see if you can get an ultrasound. An ultrasound will tell you definitively one way or the other.

With both my girls I tested negative when my period was due and finally tested positive 10-15 days later.
